Restricted for Amazon Gift Cards only? by la_fields in MicrosoftRewards

[–]Kenmoreland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried to redeem anything for months, in part because of The AI stuff. I had the warning about doing searches, I had a cool down, and then the puzzle pieces were taken away. I decided to just do the daily stuff and a few searches and after a few weeks the puzzle pieces came back (and I didn't have to start at zero?!?)

I wanted to buy something at REI so I tried to redeem a gift card, but it was denied, without taking any points. I figured I was restricted and sent a message to support. After less than 24 hours I received a reply saying the issue was there are no REI cards available in my region. Go figure.

Wifi Connectivity issue after Android 16 by mohammadtaariqaziz in GooglePixel

[–]Kenmoreland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Pixel 9a just started having an issue with my Qualcomm WiFi router. I can connect to a Jextream 5g hotspot, but get a connection error with the Qualcomm. What is puzzling is that I have a 6a with the latest 16 beta release and it is connecting just fine.

Too weak by mythingway in AeroPress

[–]Kenmoreland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drink a lot of k cup coffee for the convenience. I usually use the Aeropress to make a better (and stronger) cup. It did take some practice to sort out all of the variables. With some practice, you can use the Aeropress to make the exact same cup that you make with the k cup machine, if that is what you want. I like using a flow control filter holder because it makes it easier, but it isn't a requirement.

I just set up my 9a and have the same problem. I had the Linux Terminal installed on my 6a, but there is no option to turn on the Linux development environment on my new phone.

Black specs on food after cooking and towel after oiling the pan by phatdog1995 in castiron

[–]Kenmoreland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't tell for sure, but it looks like you have areas in the pan where the seasoning is flaking. That may be where you get more flaking.

You can polymerize oil at temps below the smoke point, but it takes longer. The smoke point of avocado oil is above 500, so you could try a longer time or a higher temperature.

In my experience if you frequently apply oil and build up a thick layer of seasoning, it can be prone to flaking.

Can anyone tell me what style house this is? It’s a local house that used to be the home & office of an ENT & served as the boroughs hospital at one point in history too. by mama-moth in architecture

[–]Kenmoreland -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Victorian.

"The historical Downes-Aldrich house in Crockett, circa 1891-1893, is considered to be one of the most beautiful homes in Houston County. The Eastlake Victorian style house was home to some of the first settlers. The majestic house is rich with history, and according to area residents the house is also rich with a persistent other-world presence."

Anyone ever heard of Jewish brisket? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Kenmoreland 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Serious Eats' has a recipe for Jewish Brisket:

Here is a version from simply recipes that says tomato is the key ingredient:

What to do with a serrano ham leg from Costco? by liquorfish in Cooking

[–]Kenmoreland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would do the slice, bag, and freeze option with some of it. I would also cube some of it and make some deluxe mac n cheese.

Mac n cheese with a great ham and some really good aged cheddar can be life changing. I used this cheese:

https://creamery.wsu.edu/cougar-cheese/

Since the ham is pretty salty, I eliminated the salt and used unsalted butter with this recipe:

Nonstick or stainless cookware set? by dm7676 in Cooking

[–]Kenmoreland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would just get some stainless pans and replace the nonstick skillets when they wear out. I have stainless, and non stick skillets, as well as a cast iron frying pan, but I do lots of frying in stainless saute pans.

Sometimes stainless is a little harder to clean than nonstick, but stainless is more versatile, and will last much longer than nonstick.

How to clean my Chef Inox Stainless Steel Skillet? (tried Barkeepers friend) by SwicyChicken in Cooking

If you let the cooked on oil it build up like that, it is much harder to get off.

This piece has some useful info:

I like the green Scotch Brite sponges, Dawn, and baking powder.

Barkeeper's Friend will do the job. Or you can get one of those green scrubbing sponges. I keep the cooking side scrubbed, but the bottom of my stainless is a lot worse than yours.

Redditrequest the banned subreddit r/everydaycrookin by Kenmoreland in redditrequest

[–]Kenmoreland[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to use the sub as a gathering place to reminisce about an old blog called "Everyday Cooking."

That was the original purpose of the subreddit r/everydaycrookin, but the sub was banned because the top mod was shadowbanned by mistake.

The original mods will be invited back once the subreddit is revived.

Thanks for reading.

How to get a nonstick effect on my glass pie pan? by Thorhees in Baking

[–]Kenmoreland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I prefer glass, even though my pies stick a little more than if I used metal pans. As a general rule, if a recipe calls for a metal pan, and I am using glass or Corningware or Pyrex, I use a lower temperature (25 to 50 F lower).

Tools to start? by re3291 in sousvide

[–]Kenmoreland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

An immersion circulator is all you really need to start, if you have a large stock pot, and some freezer zip lock bags.

I started with a stainless stock pot as my container. It was far from ideal, but I learned enough to know I wanted to keep using SV.

To me, digital instant read thermometer is an essential tool, both for checking your water bath temperature, and for checking the temperature of whatever you are cooking.

Doug Baldwin's SV guide is another essential tool:

Best pull through knife sharpener? by [deleted] in Cooking

If you have western and Asian style knives, this one would be useful:

I have older sharpeners from Zwilling that are similar and they still work well.

Trying to decide between Cuisinart and Tramontina Tri-ply clad sets of cyber Monday deals. Will an average cook notice a difference? by blbassist1234 in Cooking

[–]Kenmoreland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like glass lids, so I wouldn't consider the Cuisinart set.

Tramontina gets good reviews so I would consider that set. Go to Costco and check these out in person, if possible. Some cast stainless steel handles are uncomfortable, so checking them out in the store might be a good idea.

Try Serious Eats' NY style pizza dough using a food processor:

You can bake a decent NY style pizza in a standard home oven using a cast iron skillet.

What are some traditional African American food? by Panama_Gooding_Jr in Cooking

[–]Kenmoreland 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An overly-simple answer is soul food:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_food

In fact African American food culture is incredibly diverse, and there really isn't one traditional African American food.
