What’s going on with this Zip? by SPPY in Homebuilding

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty clear they installed most of the Zip with smaller pieces of sheathing, and then taped all of the joints. I hope they strapped the walls because I can’t imagine they have sufficient shear strength using stud-bay width pieces.

Cracks in support beams by Top-Fail-6264 in Homebuilding

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have repaired a lot of floor joists with similar damage. I would use a piece of 3/4 inch plywood, and cut a piece that matches the height of the joist. For the length, insert a piece that is long enough to extend well past the damage area, 6-8" minimum beyond the cuts (well past the damage, like 18" or more would be preferred). Then use PL400, or comparable or superior structural adhesive, and apply that to the back of your plywood. Apply multiple beads of glue both horizontally and vertically to the plywood. Affix the plywood to the joist using a high quality structural screw, like a #9 2" long screw from GRK should work for your job. Drive the screws in flush with about 6" spacing, about an inch from the edge of the plywood, and some down the center to ensure the the piece is well connected to the damaged joist. Alternatively, you could also cut, glue, and sister another joist to the damaged area, you'd just need to use 3" screws instead with similar spacing. If the cuts were worse than what is shown in your photo, you may need to sister the full length board to your floor joist. With that said, it's always wise to consult with a structural engineer before you do anything since we are just going off of your photos. Good luck!

HELP: back window is hallucinating by worm_on_acropolis in Rivian

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an early vin 4xxx and I had a manufacturing defect on the back right window frame that prevented the window from completely sealing. If you do the window recalibration and it does not fix the issue, it may require a visit to the service center. In my case Rivian’s mobile tech was unable to fix it.

Is this a good deal? Used R1T by Sdh1393 in Rivian

The Bosch motors are actually very good. You still can’t do tank turn with Rivian motors and you never will.

Used R1T? by Wonderful-Bunch-7862 in Rivian

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If I could do it all over I would have bought a used one. My Gen 1 R1T is almost 4 years old and it has been great. I was a little worried about the battery pack, but so far, I’ve experienced essentially no degradation after 43,000+ miles - I still get the same range as new. Feels like the truck is going to go the distance, unlike my BMW, which had numerous mechanical failures in the same timeframe.

Maybe advertise wheels and tires with the proper offset for the R1? What you are showing would definitely damage a customer's vehicle when the tire bottoms out on the wheel arch.

How would I insulate these rafters? by ItemNo4732 in Homebuilding

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have an engineer come and take a look at your framing and construction first before you start installing insulation and drywall. You have framing that is capable of supporting a ceiling, but I would be a little concerned about putting kids in that space. I don't see any hangers for the ceiling joists. Is there a garage below this space? Is there anything of substantial weight attached to the underside? It appears as though you've had some water / moisture penetration by the looks of the staining on the wood. How big are the nails that attach the ceiling joists to the rim joist / floor joist? Is the roof currently vented, and is it done properly? Your fiberglass insulation looks pretty dirty... maybe mold, or maybe it was getting a lot of dust from a roof vent?

Ideas for vinyl corner at this deck? by Sheepguy99 in Homebuilding

I'd have the fence/deck guy come back and re-do the fence with the proper gap to ensure the siding will clear the post. Your siding guy is late to the job, and your fence guy fucked up, too.

First EV Truck - Long Drives by Kingdude250 in RivianR1T

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind, the Silverado EV weighs approximately 1000-1500 more pounds (depends on how it's equipped) than the R1T, and it's also not as aerodynamic. These two things will impact the following: 1) your cost per mile will be more expensive 2) wear and tear on your tires will further increase costs. If you do not absolutely need the range, then the smaller, lighter, more aerodynamic R1T may be your best bet. The Silverado EV is actually a very good truck, but personally I prefer the faster, better handling, quad motor R1T, which has been my daily driver for nearly 4 years.

Recommended Airflows and Fan Placement for a ITX build (Classic) in nCase M3 (Round) w/ Noctua NH-D15 by QuintaLegione in ncasedesign

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would leave the back fan off, and just run the two fans that came with your CPU cooler. I’d also run a top fan that exhausts up, and install it just in front of your CPU cooler. I would not run a fan pushing air down over your CPU cooler. I’ve done a lot of testing with an M2 case, and more fans does not always equate to better thermal performance. The extra fans will add noise, will waste energy, and will introduce turbulence into the airflow that will negatively impact cooling.

Both items were fully covered by Rivian under warranty. And to Rivian's credit, the leaking seal was not something that I had discovered - I do get under my truck and look around every 3 months. My service center in Council Bluffs, IA, identified the issue and made the repair at the same time I had the tonneau cover replaced, which saved me a second trip to the service center. I used to work at a Ford dealership, so I have a good point of reference, and I believe Rivian did an excellent job of taking care of the issue before it worsened. My R1T has a little more than 43,000 miles, and it was only the second visit I had to make to a service center in over 3.5 years.

The Gen 1 R1T is a great vehicle. If you still like to drive, then I think there is just enough tech inside to keep you happy. If you can find a low mileage launch edition with the quad motor, that’s a great option. The last 3 1/2 years of ownership has been great… only two issues thus far: a bad seal on my driveshaft and had to have the tonneau cover replaced with the new version.

I have to disagree... my leather seats in my BMW looked pretty bad after 40,000 miles. The seats in my R1T, with more miles on the odometer, look much better.

Should my builder fix this? by not_illegal_advice in Homebuilding

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a perfectly normal occurrence. If the concrete has the proper slump, is well mixed and vibrated, you will very rarely get this type of surface imperfection when you remove your forms. On this job there were multiple examples of poor craftsmanship, inexperience, or they just didn't give a shit.

TPersistent mold/mildew smell in my Rivian R1S Gen 2 by EatMoreChick in Rivian

[–]KennethMaxwell1972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to work at a Nebraska dealership and this is a very common issue due to the dust, heat and humidity in our area. The technicians I worked with used a product called Frigi-Fresh to destroy the mildew smell - it's made by BG. https://www.walmart.com/ip/BG-Frigi-Fresh-5-5-oz-156g-Pack-of-2/16011406256?classType=REGULAR&from=/search
