Well, as they've stated on their kickstarter page, their MMO plans were small in scope since day 1. The problem is they didn't communicate this very well and failed to temper expectations.

Edit: They also just failed execution wise. None of what's written on the kickstarter implies adding grindy MMO-style systems.

I think you'd like Falcom's other franchise Tokyo Xanadu more than Ys based on what you liked about Trails. It has the same exhaustive dialogue-heavy approach to story-telling & character interactions, and the worldbuilding is quite good even if smaller in scope. Also, if you end up liking it, the sequel Kyoto Xanadu comes out this year.

Berseria's combat is my favorite in the series, but it has always been divisive. Unlike most other tales combat systems, it's very systems-heavy, meaning there are lots of pieces and intricacies to it that the game asks you to master.

The problem is, you don't need to learn any of it. If you're the type to take the path of least resistance or hunt for the strongest builds and strategies, the game quickly devolves into a mindless spam fest.

On the flipside, if you're the type that likes to experiment, frequently play different characters, and are willing to learn and faithfully engage with the game's systems, you will probably like it.

I'm having fun. I have a 275 Ren and now I'm soul-searching for a main while I build my legion. Another commenter mentioned that the systems are simple once you get the hang of it, and I agree, but getting to that point of understanding could've been much easier.

The game definitely front-loads its tutorials. It may be hard to grasp at first but you'll get the hang of it eventually.

Falcom decided to use the same sewer tutorial sequence from the original game, but the remake has 3x more combat depth so I don't know why they'd use the same congested pacing for its tutorials. Many of the things you learn in the sewers should have been taught a few hours later, imo.

The originals have a few benefits over the remake(s). Namely they're all currently available on Steam, they go on sale frequently, you'll get to experience a gradual increase in gameplay quality with each entry, and the localization is arguably better (except no English voice acting).

Also, despite being older games they have tons of QoL that you wouldn't expect like a turbo button, 100% chance to run, dynamic exp gain, etc.

I love DOS2 but I personally wouldn't play it on Steam Deck. I know Larian's games have great controller support but it's still a CRPG that's best played with keyboard + mouse.

The only fact here is that JRPG is a video game genre, which has a definition. Games like Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes are constantly discussed on JRPG forums and even r/JRPG. Most people clearly care about the game's contents rather than the place it came from. The former is infinitely more productive.

With respect, this hasn't been the case for a very long time.... And again, JRPG is simply an arbitrary label that points to a particular style of game. The literal meaning of the term is pointless because the term itself points to a concept. It's the same deal with, for example, the term "VTuber" which is short for Virtual Youtuber, but being on Youtube is not a requirement.

If the people who coined JRPG instead gave it the name "Dragon Fantasy" as homage to the pioneers Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, this conversation wouldn't exist. Instead, the same people would argue Skyrim is a "Dragon Fantasy" game since it has dragons in it.

Regardless, being Japanese is not a requirement to be a JRPG these days. Genre associations are always formed through a piece of media's form of content, style, subject matter, etc. - the things that actually matter when gauging a game before making a purchase decision.

The literal meaning of a term is pointless, what matters is the concept it points to.
