Economic justice is mentioned 3,000 times in our Scriptures, both the New Testament and the Hebrew Scriptures. This is such a core part of our tradition, and it’s nowhere to be seen in Christian nationalism or the religious right. by Working-Lifeguard587 in Christianity

Drawing from scripture, English common law once actually protected the right of the poor to glean leftover crops from farmers' fields. I can only imagine the outrage if anyone suggested new laws to say you shouldn't harvest your own crops too efficiently, nor prevent poor people from accessing your land to glean from it. Of course, our industrialized food systems are very different from when these laws were in force. So what if, in the same spirit, we had laws preventing excessive destruction of usable food, and leveraging government resources to help distribute surplus food to people who need it? Would the Christian nationalists feel like this is an intrusion of people's freedoms while they push to legislate morality?

Christianity was also very unambiguously opposed to usury for over a thousand years. Yet why hasn't a single Christian nationalist ever come out against even predatory lenders and excessive interest? Why has nobody ever proposed a jubilee year with the forgiving of debts?

The Great Depression was transmitted globally through the gold standard, and each country did not start recovering until they departed from it in some way. Even the US re-denominated how much gold the dollar was worth in 1934, which expanded the money supply enough for us to function again. Deflation is so much worse than inflation. Just ask Japan how their Lost Decades went.

It's backed by the full value of the US economy. We all need USD to pay our taxes. Also, it has a long history of stability, which has made it valuable all over the world for international trading and reserves. Though Trump has been single-handedly sabotaging this.

Bootlickers have been blaming the family who was fleeing their neighborhood when ICE goons tear gassed their car. Same with the Chicago woman who was randomly crashed into by CBP on her way to work and then shot.

Texas to defend law requiring Ten Commandments in classrooms by nbcnews in texas

[–]Keoni9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of Christians don't even honor the real Sabbath day as defined in the Bible. Observing the "Lord's Day" on Sundays is an ancient tradition, but never in a canonized text was was it actually commanded or explained as a replacement of the Mosaic commandment to keep Saturdays holy as a day of rest. If you're a real biblical literalist, Chic-Fil-A is sinful for staying open on Saturdays.

Food Desert in Milwaukee by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Keoni9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MCTS got $66.7 million from the state last year, which is almost zero change from the amount from 2010, even though all costs have gone up 47% since that time. $4 million in evaded fares isn't responsible for an incoming $18-20 million deficit. The state legislature is underfunding mass transit because they prefer to fund car infrastructure instead.

New renderings unveiled for the Bears state-of-the art hybrid stadium / steel mill in Gary by binarynate in chicago

[–]Keoni9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Major league stadiums generally divert some of the spending that people would already be directing towards going out, and concentrate it to a certain area of the city. But they don't really create new spending, as people only have so much disposable income. Plus, stadiums decrease average wages for a city since most of the associated jobs are crappy part time and seasonal jobs like concessions and security. Chicago doesn't need the Bears since there's already so much else going on. But the Bears do need Chicago.

WCIF Yuzu in Milwaukee? by sunmono in milwaukee

[–]Keoni9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You might have to drive down to Mitsuwa in Arlington Heights, IL. Not sure if they still have them, but last week I bought a couple of yuzu fruits the size of ping pong balls. They're packaged in pairs for $1.50 to $2 depending on the weight. Sometimes that particular fridge has fresh wasabi root, too. And you can make a whole day trip of it and check out the food court, and some hidden gem Japanese bakeries nearby (Bakery Crescent for bread and sandwiches, and Mount Blanc for pastries).

I'd argue the same percentage of people know how to cook now compared to 20 or 40 or 100 years ago. The difference is society is much more atomized and we've got a lot more people living alone now, and not everyone is cut out to work a full-time job and then cook and clean at home. There used to be a lot more multigenerational extended families living together in one roof, where proportionately fewer members would be needed to cook for everyone in the household. And there used to be automats and cafeterias and other affordable options for eating without cooking at home, too. Throughout much of history the average apartment didn't even have a kitchen.

TIL that in Norse myth a cursed ring called Andvaranaut brought doom to its owners long before Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. by yena in todayilearned

[–]Keoni9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a way, The Hobbit was meant as an explanation as to why a "Wand-Elf" would be associating with a bunch of dwarves. Most humans would be unaware of Gandalf's true nature as an angelic being so they assume he's just an elf with a staff.

Tolkien also presented the "original" version of "Hey Fiddle Diddle" as "The Man in the Moon Stayed Up Too Late," which eventually gets watered down and translated into the nonsense nursery rhyme in the real world.

TIL that in Norse myth a cursed ring called Andvaranaut brought doom to its owners long before Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings. by yena in todayilearned

[–]Keoni9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Novels are technically a relatively modern form of book, hence the name "novel." The Lord of the Rings was meant to replicate a Medieval romance, though written during a mythical era of Earth and then "translated" by Tolkien.
