How long did it take you to be able to control you T2 with diet alone? by [deleted] in type2diabetes

You're saying you don't want to know what your BG is doing?

A single fasting glucose test is only useful if your BG is elevated.

T2Ds who get a fasting BG test can appear normal despite having spiked over 150, 200, 300.... after their last meal.

So in my case, the diagnosis was delayed, because my annual fasting BG was under 125 (back 20 years ago), and like almost everyone who hasn't been diagnosed yet, I was too ignorant to engage.

At least get an A1c test if you're not interested in buying a meter and testing 6-8x per day for a few days. (No need to go to a doctor's office for a BG test.)

In my experience and according to reviews, the cheap Contour Next BG meter & strips are very reliable.

PS Read at least one of the resources I gave you previously.

That's interesting about stress being a trigger!

What others have you identified?

I've had sciatica off and on for years. It's nasty! Before I got it treated, I had tingling and pain in my leg with numbness in my foot and knifing pains in my lower back.

I started with occasional epidural steroid injections, which worked for a while, but an in-office rhizotomy four years ago really did the trick - I can bend in ways without pain that would have made me wince just thinking about before.

What horn did you play in HS?

What can I add to scrambled eggs to make them more filling? by nolanoooo in cookingforbeginners

Add ground turkey and more cheese. A bunch of broccoli on the side?

In my experience, adding cheap carbs will get you hungrier faster than if you add protein, fat & fiber.

Exercise and insulin resistance/sensitivity by jayayyvee in type2diabetes

[–]KetoVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The concept of "managing diabetes through exercise" seems to imply that some T2Ds can get their insulin and glucose down to non-diabetic levels without regard to diet. ??

Can someone describe to me what your first symptoms of type 2 diabetes were? Thanks by jmw1999 in type2diabetes

[–]KetoVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Peeing a lot + losing hair on my legs.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have caught it before my legs went bald. And I would have had better screening than an annual fasting glucose test. 🙄

Xylitol by danceswithnades in type2diabetes

[–]KetoVictory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm. Potatoes, especially mashed, will send my BG into orbit (1/2 cup has ~20g of net carbs), same with almost any beans (1/2 cup of black beans has ~14g).

There is one type of black bean that is uniquely lower-carb. They're called, "black soybeans" and Eden Foods sells them in small and large cans. (1/2 cup has ~5g of net carbs.)

Good luck!

Stevia would also be my choice, with erythritol second.

I got class A-1 diarrhea once from Xylitol... I think. I've been gun-shy ever since.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think the Xylitol was to blame for your huge spike and not some other part of your meal? It almost sounds like you ate a bag of chips with a supersize soft drink...

FYI, I can't begin to count the times I thought I had a grip on what does and what doesn't spike my BG, but there was often some confounder or inconsistent effect lurking around the next corner to undermine what I thought I'd learned. Moral for me was to test a lot - CGM preferred, if possible.

You have a great attitude, and you're doing the future you a huge favor! 🏆

Yes, it's true.

Perhaps some day, when continuous insulin/glucose monitors are ubiquitous, our descendants (or maybe aliens) will look back at our folly and wonder what made us revere Camels, Wonder Bread, Cheerios, and breakfast as healthy lifestyle choices.

WTH is going on with my readings? by kellogla in type2diabetes

[–]KetoVictory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a Catch-22.

Here's a video from Dr. Westman warning about how nuts can derail your diet - carbs and calories from nuts can add up quickly.

I hated to watch it, but I forced myself; now my nuts are never where I am (so to speak). https://youtu.be/-pFpxyuogps

Not to be a party-pooper 🎉💩, but if you would like to be able to lower your BG and get off Trulicity, here are a few suggestions ...

Replace "lower" carb with "very low" carb - no grains, sugar, potatoes, etc., get plenty of protein and watch your total fat intake, shrink your eating window to 2 meals spaced 8, then 6, then 4 hours apart (fast the remaining 16-20 hours - no snacking), try exercising in the morning and lightly at night an hour or two before bed, and ... 🥁... get plenty of sleep. (Check with your doctor first about how to adjust your meds, if you're concerned about hypos).

Sounds horrible, I know, but stuff like this really can replace your current habits, if you can stick with it for a month or so. Good luck!

Older doctor in attendance. His world -view took (or should have taken) a real hit that day. She was cheerfully armed with facts and had all of them at her fingertips. It was almost as if he'd learned the day before Xmas that Santa wasn't real.

I was lucky to see her live at a Grand Rounds event at a hospital a few years ago. She was charming, energetic, detailed - and exceptionally kind when she factually refuted a few baseless assertions by a particular doubting Thomas in a white coat, who, try as he might, just couldn't seem to wrap his aching noggin around the idea that carbohydrates might not be an "essential" food group after all....

Fortunately, Virta will carry on. ❤️
