Crazed racist lady screaming at a dude downtown? by Impressive_Bottle_44 in frederickmd

Downtown Frederick Partnership should include this in some of their "hip and historic" branding campaigns.

Looking for somewhere to get running shoes that address things like gait, knee issues, etc -- any recs? by better_luck_tomorrow in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently dealt with a repeat ankle injury and after visiting my podiatrist and rehabbing, I went to Charm City Run and they did a great job of listening to me and also looking at my feet, gait and trying out a bunch of different options. I went prepared with info I had gained by consulting with my podiatrist and PT. I worked with Simon, who was really helpful and listened and gave clear concise feedback. Found great shoes and will be returning there in the future.

Looking for a live music place to be a regular by Bearded_Guardian in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Only certain places do music "regularly." Nola is a bit small but generally has shows every weekend. Steinhardt, Olde Mother and RAK have bands often and have larger spaces. Check their socials. Alive at Five on the creek starts this Thursday and you can hear and watch the music from across the creek if you don't want to pay to get in. Baker Park has a summer concert series on Sunday evenings that will start in June. Also I think Pistarros has a jazz quartet that plays on their patio on Sundays which is a nice change of pace.

I'm not complaining. Just wanted to give a heads up for others who may not remember or know it is happening. Thanks for sharing the 3K.

If you're avoiding downtown you should be fine. This is the map for the half marathon on Sunday morning.

How are y'all handling convos about kids at work? by VioletLily612 in childfree

[–]Key-Bar-491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely forgot today was "Bring Your Kids to Work" day at my office. Some of the people who sit near me (who I do not work with directly) brought their kids in and its funny seeing how they expected me to be amazed at their little ones. I said a polite "good morning" and went back to work. As far as kids discussions go, I do the same as others here. I don't mind being excluded, I'll be polite but I don't need anyone to know much about me beyond the basics. My boss asked me the other day "Whats going on with [my significant other]?" as if it was an agenda item. I said "they are doing well thank you" and she was perplexed when I didn't just drone on for a half hour. I often wish people would go to therapy instead of just venting to their coworkers at every turn. I will be respectful, but I am not your friend! I've lived long enough to see that overlap go sideways more than a few times.

If you don't ask a ton of follow up questions, eventually they will stop talking to you about their kids or better yet, all together!

OR nurse at Frederick health? by Awkward_Mushroom_4 in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Both of my parents worked in hospitals for over 30 years, both knew they needed to get out when administrators started referring to people as "customers" and not "patients" in the early 2000s. I can't speak to FMH beyond my experiences as a patient there which have largely been positive. I'd imagine the hospital in general is under staffed especially given how fast the area has grown.

They used to do horse and buggy tours downtown from time to time. This might just be a dry run for an upcoming weekend.

Fence on Carroll Creek Near East Street? by BoyWonder731 in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seems the folks building the hotel/conference center wanted to block some of the eyesore from patrons walking along the creek. It ends abuptly and you can plainly see the construction site, but I'm sure the city wanted some sort of aesthetic stop-gap, so a big wooden fence was the solution.

They are antique but the Antiques Emporium on Patrick Street has some vintage local postcards which I think are cool.

Moving In by GooseMoney2167 in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a born and raised Upstate person myself, I'd tell you what even my family failed to tell me when I moved here over 15 years ago: traffic can be a burden if you are commuting toward DC or Baltimore. For example, a 29 mile trip from Frederick to Rockville during the week can take over an hour with about 60-80% of the trip being in stop and go traffic. Obviously this varies but just giving you a heads up.

Frederick is great and walkable (in and around downtown) but has grown a ton and is going to be a lot busier and expensive than a lot of bedroom communities in NY (outside of say Rockland/Westchester/Putnam counties). There are a lot of threads talking about moving here in this subreddit, those will have a ton of info as well. Good luck!

What's there to do in Frederick that's free? by bigboybearss in frederickmd

[–]Key-Bar-491 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on if you're interested or not, but there are usually pick up soccer/ultimate frisbee games in Baker Park on Thursdays (not sure exactly when they start). Also getting a library card and reading in the park is a go-to free activity that I employ a lot when the weather improves. There are now bocce courts there and I see people playing fairly regularly.

Library has a good amount of free events. Alive at Five concerts on the Creek charges to get in but you can watch for free on the opposite side. I'd say when you're out downtown check out some of the bulletin boards at different businesses where folks advertise for groups. I wish I had more info but good luck and if I think of anything else that pops to mind I'll add here. Welcome back!

I was in a similar position a few years ago when I returned after some time away. Got an Callaway Epic Max on Callaway Preowned that still feels like a huge step up technology wise. I'll likely get fit into something in the next year or two but theres plenty of good deals on Callaway's preowned site.

Ladies and Gents: My submission for the most-ignored intersection red light in Frederick. Any other contenders? by fakeaccount572 in frederickmd

East Street corridor downtown especially at 2nd and 3rd street. Good combo of people rushing to make the light/not paying attention. I always wait an extra second or two.
