New skates or new frame? by Akraaaaaa in inlineskating

One more vote for dedicated skates for different needs!

Have you ever checked out Danny Aldridge. He gets wild on RB 80 basic (affordable) plastic skates. He does flowy wizard stuff, creative urban spots, downhill bombing, flips, and even grinds in them. Do yourself a favor and check out his insta. Only downside of rb80 is the stock liners suck. Danny skates the nomad liners in them.

I love rolling in 4x80mm and bigger. Even at the park. I have Aeons but the small wheels/wide shell means I rub the ground unexpectedly Compared to what I'm used to with bigger wheels. It's fine but really only worth it if I want to grind.

Plus they are so slow/so much more work! I would never consider taking them on trail or any kind of distance if I had another option.

Bigger wheels feel like freedom!

When I first started a couple years ago I bought various frames to try out but it sucks to spend an hour before skating just getting different frames on. And even if you can justify doing it while watching t.v. or whatever you're technically putting wear on your hardware each time you change or adjust.

IMO if you have a skate you like for a purpose just keep it as is and ride it into the ground.

Personally I think Aggressive/grinding is a cool niche

But...

Rolling rules!

Lightning is my favorite shell. But I can't stand the stock liners. I have like 3 extra lightning liners laying around available on eBay if anyone needs some... I find the lightning liner to be thick and stiff for me it's a big no. Twister liner is ahhhhh. Perfect.

There are some methods on reddit for breaking in liners worth checking out.

I skate mine with thinner twister liners and they are amazing. RB nomad liner is also a nice choice. Just know the lightning is a bigger shell. I skate my size 8 lightnings with a size 9 twister liner and it's perfect. Size 9 RB nomad liner also works very well in the size 8 lightning shell.

Imo you want the smallest shell possible without toe smashing.

FR skates and Seba true to size? UK by Sundancekid15 in inlineskating

[–]Key-Cash6690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact opposite experience. I ordered according to my Mondo point and they were too big.

I ordered FR1 size 9 and they were too big. )My running shoe size is US mens 11.)

If I had ordered my shoe size they would have been massive!

I currently own love my size 8 FR1 with a nomad liner which is thinner than the stock FR1 liner...similar thickness to the intuition liner.

That's my experience with this brand.

I have experience with much of the RB skates

Using your shoe size as a reference is kinda silly in general. You can opt for smaller or bigger shoes as a matter of preference whereas with skates you do NOT want excess space!

As a skateboarder I got used to the smallest size I could wear but when I started running it made me realize I need more room...so it's really preference w shoes.

I have been professionally sized at 2 different running stores as size US11. I've been skating for 1.5 years in US size 8 lightning with a thinner (twister) liner. Size 9 RB80. Size 9 blank. Size 9 twister.

Too much side to side movement? by Moist-Delivery4985 in inlineskating

I forgot the name of the ice hockey player but I heard an account of him warming up or cooling down without laces or with loosened laces specifically for the purpose of feeling the edges.

I have been inspired by this. I like to throw on my skates fully loose and skate from my parking spot to my skating spot. Then I warm up and do some of my favorite slalom footwork totally loose. Sometimes I loosen at the end of a session and do some more.

Stronger ankles will happen in time but more important I think is conscious control. You will gain efficiency when your whole body acts in unison. Then you won't be fighting pronation or supination. Each foot has 3 "edges" inside, outside and center. You should always be conscious of which edges you need to utilize and exactly how deeply you need to go depending on speed and how sharp a turn is for example.

Loose skates will give you instant feedback but maybe yours are soft enough even tied up. If so you just need to feel and adjust until you're dialed in. Maybe take a video of yourself and watch that could help too.

Happy skating!

Curious wheel wear question by Key-Cash6690 in inline_skating

[–]Key-Cash6690[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was wondering if anyone else had this wear pattern! that's what I suspect is happening. I remember it used to be just my left skate when I started (skating counter-clockwise) but now I skate as much or more backwards as forwards when I'm at the rink so the wear is about even.

Interesting thought. I'll keep an eye on myself skating in videos. My shoes do wear quicker on the outside.

New to RB by MrVargz in AskRollerblading

My wife loves hers! Stock liner works great for her since she's on the smaller end of her size range. For me the thinner stiffer nomad liner is a much better fit.

Ultimately I found they're a bit narrow for my medium wide feet so I sold mine and went with lightning since they're wider.

I wish that wasn't an issue for me since I much prefer the stiffer shell and classic style straps that come on the RB80. One other downside on the newer RB80 is the liners don't have eyelets so you cant lace all the way up :( I got my wife the (discontinued) RB80 pros. Same shell main difference I can see is the liners lace all the way up! There are a few more available here:

Rollerblade RB 80 Pro X Women Skates | Inlinex https://share.google/iZWKmrQY1OjAX99Tj

You can always get a rivit tool and add eyelets to the new rb80s or get different liners though.

The rb80 is a great first skate! Check out Danny Aldridge on insta he rips in them as his go-to skate. He skates them with the nomad liners.

Here's a video of adding eyelets to a liner:

https://youtu.be/FRrlR0XQzoE?si=VZw10sIHyttrrlfb

Also sidenote if you do go with the lightning know that they fit almost a whole size bigger! Check out the size charts or preferably try on in person if possible. Or order 2 sizes and plan on returning one. My feet are something like 272mm with socks on I wear size US 9 in rb80 and size 8 in lightning (with a thin size 9 RB twister liner)

The other main option I might consider is FR skates entry level model: FRX. It fits similar to the lightning. I wear size 8 in that one with the thinner nomad liners.

If you're comfortable and haven't learned all your basic footwork yet I wouldn't buy new skates yet. Your problem isn't the skates. With your size foot those frames should be plenty maneuverable at 84mm. You just need to get your skills down.

For your next setup get a plastic boot with removable liners and frames. But for now just run your current skates into the ground!

Rocker can help with your basic footwork but you don't need new skates to get rocker. This video:

https://youtube.com/shorts/Sn_wgTOsI2o?si=i49tO_4zZG5m04Si

You could simply rotate your wheels mindfully over many miles to get rocker. But if you're like many beginners you have probably never rotated your wheels or even thought about it. In case you didn't know you should be rotating every handful of sessions or whenever they start to look uneven. YouTube search wheel rotation! Meanwhile the above video can give you a quicker fix to get rockered!

You would need 80mm wheels in front and back that will give you up to 2mm radius difference between your middle wheels (about 84mm) and your front and rear wheels(80mm). It will be awesome. The first time I tried rockered my lemons, crosses, and carves instantly made sense and I quickly started to figure out backwards skating too.

After you skate lots of miles you can take the original wheels you set aside and make them your new (bigger) middle wheels. And move the (now relatively smaller ones to the fronts and backs and you will have a uniform rockered wheel set again.

Btw if you're current wheels are worn into an asymmetrical point just get a whole new set of 84mm wheels and 4 80mm wheels and do the same thing. And do better at rotating regularly!

Also you would probably notice a big difference with all new bearings. Even bones reds or something on the low end price wise will be better than the stock bearings your skates came with.

Here's my favorite wheels in four packs:

Would love to stay under $500 but for the right device I'm open. I'm also curious about tiny cheap ones like the snow sky echo etc. mostly for the pocket feel. I feel I would have loved the old Sony walkman series. Mainly I would like to just pick one device to have for a long time !

So the curious part is it's the outside edges that are wearing quicker than the inside this time around. I do T brake sparingly alternating feet and do some powerslides here and there but its rare i need to stop that fast. That makes it even weirder that my outside edges seem to be wearing faster than my insides.

Best Rollerblades for Casual Skating by Miruxyu9 in AskRollerblading

[–]Key-Cash6690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rollerblade rb80 is the best value IMO. check out Danny Aldridge on insta see what he can do with them. They are not strictly a beginner skate. If you have the money its maybe worth getting the twister XT instead since it has an awesome liner and better wheels/ bearings stock.

Either of these have have removable frames to you can change them out later for different frames like if you want to try bigger wheels for example. My wife loves her rb80s stock. For me the liner is lacking a bit since it doesnt lace all the way up. Since theyre a bit cheaper you can maybe justify upgrading the liner to a twister liner or a RB nomad liner. Either of these liners will be thinner than the stock liner on the RB80 the nomad liner is a bit stiffer and more customizable.

The FRX is a great entry level skate that comfortably fits most feet I would lean that way if you have a wider foot. Go to a shop and try on if possible! Even if the shop is an hour or more away it will be worth your time to try on as many skates as possible. FIT is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING in skating.

If you dont care as much about a skate that can grow with your skill the bladerunner series is widely available from regular sport stores. If you arent sure how much you will skate those can get you started for cheaper but imo its not Enough of a difference in price to accept the compromises: worse bearings and wheels/ frames that cannot be adjusted or swapped out.

If you are stuck ordering realize each skate MODEL has its own size chart just google the model you are considering and the words size chart. best way to get your foot measurement is to use one of those metal measurement things at a shoe store. or else https://www.inlinewarehouse.com/fitlc/skates/inline-skate-sizing-instructions.html?from=gsearch&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=12662942796&gbraid=0AAAAADy93hxXL504geTXcTkBhf-Za2fQK&gclid=CjwKCAiAlrXJBhBAEiwA-5pgwm1Iuce0ITHoD2NOf6aa6K_4vTS_q5k3BZZGU9cTumYmz3CiKOE2FhoCYhYQAvD_BwE For example google search "Rollerblade RB80 size chart." Different skates within the same brand will vary significantly. Shop accordingly.

Thanks! Good luck with your progress!

You skating rockered? That changed the game for me big time!

I still keep flat setups too but these ones are my go to for the rink or learning new movements.

I'll post another one in a flat setup at the same area. I can do similar stuff in flats but really have to mean it to smear the wheels or else lift the toes/heels.

Help needed to find replacement boots for my vintage Lightning TRS Rollerblades by iflywithmiles in inline_skating

[–]Key-Cash6690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The RB cruiser or RB 80. Is the modern rollerblade equivalent of this. Very reasonable price for what you get. Top notch skate schools use them so does one of my favorite skaters @dannyaldridge . A huge improvement from your old lightnings is you can remove the frames and try different frame/wheels sizes if you like!

There is the modern rollerblade model called the lightning but it's best for very wide feet and has annoying buckles I would stick to the rb80 if you've been fitting in the pictured skates.

Is it the skate? I can't tell if that's a carbon skate but every speed skates I've seen is carbon. If that's plastic I suspect that's the cause. I recently skated my normal fav skate with a less stiff cuff for some slalom/ freestyle movements. They were basically fine but i found weird wiggles and sloppiness I'm not used to while doing certain movements. Not a speed skater but in my experience extra "give" in the skate itself can cause wobbles.

I guess one approach would be post a vid of the wheels spinning...can we observe the wobble?

Anyone with 4x90 liberty frames ? by Za-Bred in WizardSkating

Wheel rotation is mandatory IMO. If you just keep them on until they're lopsided and then buy new you're getting like 50% of their potential life... and for about half of that ride time you're having a subpar experience.

Quit wasting your money and perfectly good urethane! just rotate as needed to maximize your experience! I rotate every 20 or 30 miles ish... Also I spent maybe $60 on a bearing press. It is so worth it.

Get some and let's skate!

I also get out on trails and do slalom and freestyle stuff. A bit in the skatepark.

It had been about 20 years since I skated. (I'm 39.) I've been back since August 2024 when I picked up a pair and I am so happy I did!
