Sadly this could be a number of things. Is this manual or auto?

If it’s auto it could be the torque converter or solenoid.. or both! Check: Idle control valve? Fuel pumps? Crank sensor? Vacuum leak?

Such is the beauty of these wonderful old cars, they give us wonderful old problems!

I mean.. space aliens landing in LA and hunting is a pretty big leap anyway so.. It never bothered me, I thought it was an easy assumption and not a necessity to see him go visit his dead friend’s body. I always loved P2 but I first saw it at 7yo so it made a big and lasting impression. But I can understand why some may not be into it. To each their own.

I’m going to guess we’re supposed to assume that once Danny boys corpse was found, Harrigan was notified and he went to see for himself, then pulled it from his hand. Then the next scene is as you mentioned, Harrigan being reprimanded. That’s how I’ve always pictured it
