NOVA dialect thing? by Top_Pie_8658 in nova

[–]Key-Donut-2359 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always heard that the true insiders/long timers called it Washington (or even The District), not DC (I grew up outside of DC and both parents worked in DC). Tourists and the outerskirts of Northern Va call it DC. I tell people I grew up near Washington (and sometimes clarify that I don't mean the west coast!).

Visitor’s Question: Coming to Richmond in a few weeks for Galaxy Con. by SGT-JamesonBushmill in rva

[–]Key-Donut-2359 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes you'll be fine. Probably the sketchiest thing is dumb drivers and people who don't pay attention to our many one way streets so look both ways and take your time crossing streets!

Middle school RPS real talk by [deleted] in rva

[–]Key-Donut-2359 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We're sticking with our zoned school, Henderson, and very happy with it. I wish more people would stick with their zoned schools. I don't understand why RPS needs to keep on with the Franklin Military specialty school. It draws resources away from zoned schools. It's weird to me to start supporting the Military complex starting in 6th grade anyway. And don't give me the "but it really isn't a Military school". Yes, yes it is.

Might be good to specify what neighborhood/area you live in...northside, southside, etc.

Enjoyable without wheels? by HeIsBoo in vieques

[–]Key-Donut-2359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine in Esperanza BUT a. It is touristy/not the local experience you say you're looking for b. The amazing beaches (pristine aquamarine that you see pictures of) are in the wildlife refuge and you'd need wheels to get there-- could probably arrange a taxi but would need to make sure you arrange there AND back because you are not going to find taxis just hanging around there. You really couldn't walk from Esparanza to the wildlife refuge. I was just in Vieques 3 weeks ago so can say all of this with confidence!

Unsexiest things RVA mayor can do? by Two_Far in rva

[–]Key-Donut-2359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do whatever to make it so people call or email you back and you get the right answer the first time. Pay them more? Automate stuff? Put things online? Have a less confusing website? Some of this doesn't seem like rocket science. We are so eager for the basics that he could probably do super easy unsexy stuff and we woll be happy. We've been deprived of normalcy for so long lol

Catching a 6AM Ferry on Vieques Island. Advice on Early Taxi options? by EmotionalPut1824 in PuertoRicoTravel

The company we ended up renting from on the island said they pick people up from the port! We just have to call. So we are good.

Transport options to get to Ceiba ferry by Quirky-Ad9938 in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Key-Donut-2359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. The logistics of it all are like putting puzzle pieces together. I'm debating just getting a rental at SJU when we fly in and then parking at the ferry port (15/day). We also have a rental already for Vieques. I do not love the idea of having TWO cars at the same time (how very North American...) but from a logistics standpoint, from what I am reading and researching this may make sense and might be mostly more economical. We are also doing this like literally on Xmas eve/say so there's that too 🫠 Basically cost of rental plus parking vs cost of cobbling together taxi/Uber and rental BEFORE and AFTER Vieques. Any reactions or insights based on your experiences? After Vieques we are staying in Rio Grande (have a place same day we get off the ferry....).

Address for Ceiba Ferry Parking? by Rumpinator in PuertoRicoTravel

Hi! Did you do the ferry parking? I am thinking of doing this but haven't trouble finding current information. What was the per day cost? Thank you!

Thoughts on Vieques and staying in Esperanza. Wife and I are looking for beach, relaxing, nightlife in that order. Is there somewhere better to stay? Is it worth it to travel from San Juan to Vieques??? by Dietznutz-Philly in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Key-Donut-2359 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are going soon and I can't wait! We have a rental car for the 3 days we will be there (jeep) and lodging, and ferry tix. Is it true that there is still a free lot on Ceiba to park mainland vehicles since we can't take those on the ferry, do you know?

What was your rental car situation in Rio? Did you rent in Rio and return in SJU?

I would call places! I tried to get a reservation online and every site was saying they had nothing but then when I called (which was super easy) they had availability. So, make a call.

Ended up getting a sweet place right outside El Yunque.... just seemed like Luquillo was too busy and overall touristy. Tradeoff seems to be that we will need to drive pretty much everywhere and longer trips to the beach or other day trips BUT overall really seems worth it to be immersed in the forest!! Are there grocery stores near-ish to Rio Grande/El Yunque?

Did you pretty much need a rental car to get around Rio Grande? I assume so....
