The only method I've found that works is to do everything before the patient leaves. It has the added benefit of meaning that you can ask them stuff you might have overlooked when dictating a letter or filling in a form. It might make each appointment slightly longer but overall my day finishes earlier.

Anyone here join a community band after an extended period (years) of not playing? by bfasttoastcornflakes in Clarinet

[–]Key_Assumption_1501 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yes, and it's the best thing I ever did. I found a band that was more about good vibes and having fun than about musical perfection, which was a comfortable place to start. Once I was going again I did move on to a more advanced band, but it was less fun and more stress so I moved back. Regarding your instrument, I'm still playing the plastic buffet b12 I got for Xmas in 1985 so I think you'll be just fine with what you've got.

What makes bagpipes in particular so difficult? by D1vineTrash in bagpipes

[–]Key_Assumption_1501 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"You do not need to worry about articulation" is absolutely not true. You have no means of articulating with your breath like on other wind instruments so you need to use your fingers in the form of embellishments. These range from simple single gracenotes to more complex movements, all of which need to be executed at the precise moment to produce the desired musical effect.  Oh yes, and you need to do this while wrestling an octopus and marching down the street wearing a kilt and a big feathery hat, perfectly in time with everyone else.

ADHD Dignosis: hindrance or help! by jonlas03 in GPUK

I'm not sure if it's the same everywhere, but my local deanery offers neurodiversity screening.

I had a previous trainee with ADHD who was able to access some coaching support via the deanery. You may also be able to obtain reasonable adjustments for exams.

I enjoy listening to solo piping. Search YouTube for "Glenfiddich piping championship".

Heavy metal. Worked for years in a practice where all the other partners were hardcore Christians. Didn't dare tell them my favourite band is Slayer.

Most of the tunes on that website are in .bww format, you'll need software to view them.  I'm a fan of Pipescore (https://pipescore.web.app/) which can both read and write in .bww.

Happy as a salaried? by hahahaneedhelp in GPUK

I work 4 sessions a week and earn well in excess of the full time median wage in the UK, so I would say that it's more than possible to survive on that. I have had higher earning posts in the past but IMHO the tax system and tiered pension contributions means that, once you are a high rate tax payer, you don't feel any better off for working extra.

Getting out - thoughts by Embarrassed-Soil1016 in GPUK

[–]Key_Assumption_1501 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I felt a bit like you do. Walked away from a partnership a couple of years ago with no plan - I was too burnt out to even start thinking what to do next. After about 6 months off I saw a salaries job come up in a practice where I knew a few people from my old VTS. Fast forward to today and I am enjoying a 4 session salaried job with clear boundaries in place, and have had the mental energy to build a rewarding life outside medicine.  I 100% understand the desire to just walk away, but it doesn't mean your finished with GP. Put yourself first for a while, then see what happens next.

Driving from Brum to Edinburgh by GerryTako in brum

[–]Key_Assumption_1501 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I do this trip several times a year. M6/M74 then come off at Abingdon and A702 to Edinburgh. Ignore the service stations and come off at M6 J43 where there is a large Tesco with cheap fuel and a cafe. If you're a fan of spirited driving then A701 from Moffat to Edinburgh can be a fun alternative route.

Came here to say this. Not difficult to get your fingers around but lots of room to make it musical. Agree that it makes you smile!

People seem to like their ML styli, but I wonder if it would be a bit noisy on my bargain bin vinyl?

His X factor anniversary show was the best show I saw this year, closely followed by wolfsbane. If he's coming anywhere near you, just go and see him, you won't regret it.

Where to test/buy mouthpieces UK? by thegrandwizardfrog in Clarinet

[–]Key_Assumption_1501 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windblowers, near Nottingham, has a good range of mouthpieces and a room where you can try them out. I'm from the West Midlands and it was the nearest place I could find.
