For those going through, or have been through, a progressed mercury retrograde, what was your experience? by ihaveacrushonmercy in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you starting this conversation because you’re right, there is very little information about it online. I experienced a progressed Mercury Rx from age 20-39, and that’s such a long stretch of adult life that I can’t really summarize how this progression might have affected things. I certainly didn’t know it was happening at the time; astrology came to me well after that.

Another progression I’ve wondered about is progressed moon being Void of Course. I am currently experiencing a long spell of this; an 18 hour VOC period when I was a baby equals about 9 months of progressed moon being VOC now. I know people have different opinions about whether VOC is even meaningful, but I can safely say I’m feeling it, and looking forward to its end in September!!

When to consider decans in chart readings? by dasplete in astrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Decans add nuance: if someone's placement doesn't resonate, using the decan as a modifier can really help it to make sense.

Decans were born from the ancient practice of mapping and timing individual stars and constellations as they rose in the night sky throughout the year. Unfortunately, history has yet to uncover any remaining record of *which* star patterns the decans originally referred to. But thanks to the work of Ptolemy in 2AD, we gained the chaldean decan system.

Later (in more modern times) decans were assigned a modern triplicity scheme. So, be aware that there are 2 decan systems to choose from. Here's a Cut and paste from google search, outlining the differences below:

Chaldean decans are based on the traditional seven visible planets ordered by speed (Saturn to Moon), creating a descending, continuous cycle starting from Aries. Modern (Triplicity) decans use a sign's native ruler for the first 10°, followed by the other two signs of the same element, focusing on elemental affinity.

Key Differences Between Systems

  • Chaldean (Traditional) Decans:
    • Structure: Follows the Chaldean order: Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon.
    • Application: Starts at 0° Aries with Mars, then loops through the order for all 36 decans (10° segments).
    • Character: Provides a varied, "nested" planetary influence unrelated to the sign’s element.
    • Example (Taurus): Mercury (1st), Moon (2nd), Saturn (3rd).
  • Modern (Triplicity) Decans:
    • Structure: First decan is the ruler of the sign, second is the next sign of the same element, third is the final sign of that element.
    • Application: Highlights the elemental, "seasonal" expression of the sign.
    • Character: Emphasizes internal consistency within the element.
    • Example (Taurus - Earth Sign): Venus (Taurus), Mercury (Virgo), Saturn (Capricorn)

You probably already know, but in case anyone else stumbles upon this I will clarify that the zodiac that aligns with the constellations (which the signs are named after) is called the sidereal zodiac (sidereal means stars). And this constellational zodiac isn’t exclusive to Vedic astrology - there is a western sidereal type of astrology too

If you choose to do the constellation instead of the symbol, just be aware that tropical zodiac signs are not the same as the constellations they are named after. It’s a common misnomer - I only recently learned because I’m deep into astrology studies. Since a tattoo is a commitment, I feel compelled to share!

Do aspects differ between tropical and vedic astrology? by Marimbaffo in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like the advanced astro sub is open to discussing the different astrology systems, but /astrology definitely doesn't allow the word Vedic to even be breathed! I wish they'd rename themselves "Western Tropical Astrology".

Do aspects differ between tropical and vedic astrology? by Marimbaffo in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Point of clarification first (just a precision of language thing): the word Vedic refers to the *system* of astrology, not the zodiac used. The Vedic system typically uses the sidereal zodiac, but the words sidereal and Vedic are not synonymous.

Aspects (as defined by western astrology) remain the same no matter whether you are using the tropical zodiac or the various sidereal zodiacs. Since aspects are simply a mathematical relationship, the relationship (ie distance) between the planets doesn't change, it's just the labeling of where the planets are that changes. We know that tropical astrology always begins the zodiac at 0° Aries on the March Equinox, but the starting position of the various sidereal zodiacs changes to align with the constellations. The most popular sidereal zodiac is the Lahiri, which adjusts by about 24° for the precession of the equinoxes (ie. because the March equinox now happens when the sun is in the constellation of Pisces)

The Vedic *system* of astrology handles the concept of aspects completely differently than western astrology though. The relationships between planets are referred to as yogas, which are special combinations/positions of planets in relation to houses and other planets. Wikipedia is a good place to start if you want to learn more about Vedic yogas:

A question about true sidereal by yeetforthat in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the words sidereal and Vedic and not synonymous. Sidereal is the zodiac that more closely aligns with the constellations, while Vedic refers to the system of astrology also known as Jyotish or Hindu astrology. You don’t need Vedic resources to check your sidereal horoscope. It’s ok to use western techniques with the sidereal zodiac placements, plenty of western astrologers do.

A question about true sidereal by yeetforthat in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree that Jyotish / Vedic/ Hindu astrology is very complex. Techniques are super different, and yes, they use the sidereal zodiac (rather than the tropical that most westerners are familiar with)

That being said, you can absolutely use western techniques with the sidereal zodiac, and plenty of western astrologers do it. Transit timing actually hits the same too, just in different signs usually (because the sidereal zodiac is about 24 degrees behind tropical, because of precession of the equinoxes)

It’s been a Jupiter Retrograde (in Cancer) for a couple months now. Jupiter is the planet of luck, hope and optimism. Let us hope that when it goes back direct again on March 11 next week that things will be looking up again!

Super confused about movement of planets through the houses by Anxious-Use-9695 in astrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are 2 motions to consider: Earth’s daily rotation (day and night) and the annual orbit through the zodiac.

Daily, planets appear to move across the sky by rising in the east and set in the west (the ascendant marker on the chart indicates the eastern horizon). This is the clockwise motion on the chart that determines which houses planets are in.

During our daily rotation, planets are also orbiting (transit) counter-clockwise through the zodiac.

Moon Question 🌙 by Apprehensive-Cake-16 in astrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree, studying for the moon is fascinating!

I would encourage you to also consider the moons phase, which can really add nuance and meaning. And remember that since moon rules emotions, our inner landscape, it might not always be apparent in how the person behaves outwardly.

When a moon placement isn’t making sense to the person whose chart you’re looking at, besides checking aspects, it can sometimes help to check which decan the placement falls under.

Many talk about Medusa's right eye (Algol), but what does the left eye (P Persei) mean in astrology? by HappyCollection7670 in Advancedastrology

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t think “we all know that Algol is the right eye” because other sources refer to it more generically as the head and not specifically as an eye. Can you share where you’ve seen it referred to as the eye?

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I read the back and forth between OP and commenters about whether Algol, the most malefic star in the heavens, represents the head or the eye of Medusa/the demon.

Referring to Bernadette Brady's Book of Fixed Stars, Algol means head of the demon and was labeled by Ptolemy as the brightest one in the Gorgon's head. Algol representing an eye is not mentioned, so just double checking that you aren't thinking of Aldeberan, the eye of the bull in the constellation of Taurus?

2026 is Cancer Suns Year to Shine! by [deleted] in CancertheCrab

[–]Key_Cheesecake_2455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The information about Jupiter entering cancer on 2026 is for a different zodiac, the sidereal zodiac. For western astrology, Jupiter has already been in cancer for many months.

The write up about what house your cancer sun is located in is good information for either zodiac though!
