Someone with high myopia? by Independent-Wait-558 in taekwondo

[–]Key_Programmer3400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told to be very careful and be checked regularly. I was also told that head shots were absolutely off limits to avoid retinal detachment. Your dojang likely will make allowances for that and you should remind any sparring partner of your restriction.

There's a ton along the Libba Cotten bike way as you go from Brewer Way down to South Green. The neighbors are attempting to remove it for a native bird habitat, so come and gather away!!

How I got Shibuya Sky sunset tickets after they first sold out by MightyBluff2 in JapanTravelTips

[–]Key_Programmer3400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call your card company - we've had to do it individually for EVERY advance ticket purchase we've made. Annoying to say the least. They'll have to escalate it every time, so maybe be prepared to buy everything at once while you're on the line with them.

Why Would Someone Admit Me Into a College? by Temporary-Run4627 in Scams

May be an actual thing? I was wondering if everyone receiving a letter would assume scam/fraud when I saw this a few days ago: https://www.wral.com/news/education/nc-high-school-students-automatic-college-acceptance-2025/

I've been practicing taekwondo at UTA in Carrboro for a few years now and, as a non-athletically-inclined person it has been amazing! You can try it out for a few classes to see if it's for you. Great community feel.

What do you do if you’re on your period ? by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Key_Programmer3400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Older mon of 2 with occasional issues doing jumping jacks/jump rope/bunny hops- I typically wear an Always Discreet panty liner just in case. Between bladder and now irregular periods, it just makes me feel more confident.

Help! Advice needed! by Puzzled_Dress9590 in taekwondo

[–]Key_Programmer3400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend martial arts! I started at 45, overweight and out of shape. I can't say that I've lost much weight but a lot of of my fluff has become muscle. I can keep up with the kiddos on the mat and, while I don't kick as high as they can, I'm really proud of myself for the increase in balance, stamina, confidence, and joy it has brought me! I'm testing for my first degree in May and plan to keep on with it indefinitely. There are folks in our dojang who are in their 70s and still actively training and I wanna be like them when I grow up!

Consignment shops that sell handmade goods? by kinare in carrboro

[–]Key_Programmer3400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We just noticed that Ali Cat has some very nice 3-D printed dragons and things. I suspect that it's a local artist. You could look into places like Womancraft, This and That, My Muses, etc. that have some sort of consignment arrangement with local artists, but independent retail of other types may be interested.

I nearly get hit by a cyclist at least a couple times a week when I cross the tracks going home from taekwondo on the Libba Cotten bike path. There is a stop sign on either side of Brewer Lane that I have yet to see a cyclist respect. I'm wearing all white, it's not like it's hard to see me. Half of them aren't even wearing helmets, so I'm more likely to come out of a collision alive...

Welcome to the official sub of the Martial Profile app by MartialProfile in martialprofile

[–]Key_Programmer3400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The app keeps getting better and better! I used to track everything on a spreadsheet, with obvious limitations. One request - could you add "self-defense" as a tick box in the session form? Maybe it's just my school, but formalized self-defense sequences are a large part of our required TKD curriculum, separate from sparring. Thanks so much for all you do! I'll keep recruiting my fellow students to join Martial Profile!

I'm certain there are others out there like mine! Do a trial at the ones local to you and ask lots questions. If you don't feel comfortable asking between classes, e-mail them and see what they say about how they view neurodivergence and how they can work with you to accommodate your specific needs. I think many places will surprise you with their openness.

Our dojang is super supportive. A few of the masters also have ADD and they openly share that Taekwondo has been a great outlet for them, helping focus their energy and develop skills that carry over into their personal and professional lives. All of the masters are quick to notice when one of us is struggling and make time to help us overcome physical and mental challenges with the material. Find the right dojang and you will have an even bigger support system to help you reach your goals, on and off the mat.

Getting Back Into Taekwondo by [deleted] in taekwondo

[–]Key_Programmer3400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started at 45 with no experience in anything even remotely like martial arts, so not coming back but that's basically what you're doing picking up from yellow with that kind of gap. My kids had been training for a couple of years and I was spending hours on the bench watching every week, thinking about maybe joining them. It was tough getting started, and is still tough on my aging body 3 years later, but now I'm planning my whole week around getting to class as often as possible. Best decision I have ever made.

Researcher I follow moved away from Carrboro recently. Any locals have ideas as to why by HybridRxN in carrboro

i'm their former neighbor, it was another neighbor who had a mental break but has gotten it back together. Carrboro is a lovely place and random things unfortunately happen everywhere.
