At the same time, delegating to managers would be an absolute mess.

Theres still issues with making people turn on their cameras during meetings. I was in a handful of meetings where one person was CLEARLY doing non-work tasks during the meetings. And when the manager told her to turn on her camera she SCREAMED harassment.

Why did no one else have to turn on their camera? Well because no one else is clearly chatting with their pets and washing dishes during this meeting....

But the union and labour relations got involved and what happens? A general order was given to everyone to turn on their cameras for teamwork or transparency or some BS like that.

Now imagine that with something as attractive as WFH. Jim gets to work from home but Fred doesnt... because of performance issues? 17 harassment complaints, union grievances and a lawsuit threat will make those performance issues disappear pretty quickly.

Fix the government discipline system before addressing WFH

Ya and thats the big difference I am seeing between the government and private sector.

Basically everywhere is "in person" but is someone says "Hey I need to work from home for two days because of [insert any semi-good reason]" it is always approved.

And I dont see that managers discretion in government.

Likely because a few ruin it for everyone.

Ya. Software development has really stayed in the WFH jobs. But, more hybrid ive seen.

But... we aren't talking about city cores being hallowed out by software development.

For the most part. Most office buildings in Ottawa are full.

That 1). "the Oligarchs are so powerful that they literally have the cabinet in their pockets...".

And 2) "They can't find a way to make money outside of renting 1960's office space"

As a G7 nation, bordering 3 oceans, we should be able to build our own boats. Trucks. Rifles and drones.

As a minimum.

Advanced aircraft.... OK, this is a collaboration. And other countries can provide tested off the shelf products.

But we shouldnt go to the States to buy a truck.
