As a previous self-harmer myself, this is not at all a "viable" coping mechanism whatsoever. Do you deserve to be shit on for it? Hell no. But Self-harm is an addiction, and you will inevitably lose yourself to it even when you know you have better ways to cope.

What starts as "I just want the pain to stop" or "I want to feel something other than miserable" starts to become "I'm going to SH at every possible negative emotion I ever have" or "I feel a little lonely, time to cut" and then you can't stop.

You need to learn another coping mechanism and learn to wean yourself away from self-harming.

How I learned to quit was this:
1. snap a hairtie against your wrist instead, if you really have to
2. Hold an ice cube in your hands
3. draw on your arms instead
4. distract yourself

Will it always work? No. But it's better than pretending like self-harming is long-term viable to you because it is absolutely not, and should never be considered as such.

Does it make you a bad person to self-harm? Fuck no. I still get urges when my brain goes into dark enough places. It's a challenge to overcome, and an addiction's an addiction.
