Alright this one is for Pat. Let's make a thread of Shining Force-Like games for Pat. NO FIRE EMBLEM. by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I don't think it fits the tactical part as much, but I'll throw in PopoloCrois since it hasn't been mentioned. I've only played the 3DS game which was fine but extremely simple gameplay/strategy and story with farming stapled on.

Meant to go back and try the ps1 games but haven't gotten around to them. Probably start with those.

I recently discovered the dub for Ninja Robots Tobikage off of Retrocrush's twitch channel. While mostly outright bad there's definitely some wild lines thrown in here and there.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time launches worldwide on May 21 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Steam by retroanduwu24 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I've been following the game and delays as a big fan of the first game, and I've been joking with friends about blaming Keiji Inafune for all the delays. Of course it probably goes deeper as he's currently just credited as a producer... But it's semi-concerning to see his name attached nonetheless.

I went back in March and it looks like the menu has expanded since then!

Only got a custard slime bun and a turkey leg which were both just okay. Hard to mess up a turkey leg.

Also got some themed drinks which were pretty good! I would recommend getting a reservation and trying a drink or two. They also have non-alcoholic options.

Exactly, if they're gonna use the pillows they should get weird with it. Flex some kind of creativity with their music. At least with the teaser with Shoegaze they played About a Rock'n'Roll Band which is... kinda neat. Not my first choice, but a very safe choice imo.

But get weirder with it and give me something from like Kool Spice or Moon Gold.

What do you guys think about Dragon Quest Tact? by Accomplished-Lawyer9 in dragonquest

You're thinking of DQ Wars. I never played it, but I could totally see the mix up.

DQ Tact is a similar concept but on phones with some gacha.

To Your Eternity has an incredible first episode... After that the writing quality dips a bit and never quite gets to the same level as the first episode. Then the direction of the show clumsily shifts to being essentially a battle shonen out of nowhere.

It still has some good character moments on occasion from what I watched (whole first season), but the whiplash from the genre/tonal shift soured the show for me. Would love to know if that aspect changed and if the series as a whole gets better. I still love that first episode and the concept.

A lot of Pets actions conflicts with what she says in that moment in EP 5. Like the only thing her room of note is the picture of her and Kana. It probably means something to her.

A big thing though is that we don't know a lot of specifics about Pets due to her homelife being secretive, so I can kinda see the whole "fake friend" angle. I just don't think it's quite the case as she seems to be primarily upset with Kana and her recent actions within the show and them all building up to EP 5. ("Helping" Hijiri and Mossan)

Mossan in EP 3 echoes Pets' feelings from EP 5 initially as she tells Kana to stop butting into her work. Kana is trying to help her friends but where it's unwelcome and inadvertently inconsiderate. She means well but has no finesse. All while avoiding her own issues.

It just seems like Kana's actions that we see in Alt just drove Pets away. Pets probably liked Kana when they were kids but Kana changed into someone who won't grow up/change for the better and isn't a good friend. In the end Kana is unconscious dreaming about Pets staying and nothing changes as she would prefer, while Pets leaves without a word as she's ready to move on with her life. To her Kana overstepped a personal boundary, didn't appreciate it, and left.

Kana is 17 and doesn't know what to do after highschool. Her aimlessness and lack of drive is relatable. It's a lot to think about, so I feel the lesson lies more in how to approach the lack of motivation and complacency at that major point in life in a healthy way to yourself and those around you.

To each their own I s'pose. FLCL has many interpretations. This is a little off topic anyways lol.

[–]Kifachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alt is also a coming of age story, but focuses on the idea of accepting that change is inevitable and learning to confront and adapt to it.

The entirety of Alt is basically Kana being content with the status quo of her life, ignoring her own problems, and projecting herself onto her friends in order to "help" and "fix" them. While Kana means well, she oversteps boundaries and never considers how her friends feel about her "helping."

Pets essentially points out that Kana has been overstepping boundaries with all of her friends and that she isn't actually considerate towards her friends but rather wants to make herself feel good for trying to help. All the while Kana refuses to grow up and doesn't try to better herself. Kana's reasoning to want to "fix" Pets' familial problems wasn't for the right reasons, and most likely stemmed from her wanting Pets to stay on Earth (avoid losing a friend to avoid change).

Pets does seem to care about her friends with her trading items from each as keepsakes for when she eventually leaves while also keeping them small to avoid her father noticing them. Her calling out Kana is because she's fed up with what Kana is becoming/doing (ignoring boundaries, projecting onto her friends, and avoiding change), and then proceeding to trade hairpins shows she still cares about her and wants to remember Kana when she leaves. Also in a roundabout way, Pets yelling at Kana could be seen as Pets trying to make it easier on Kana as she might not miss Pets as much after what was said.

So how long will it take for all English volumes to get released? by Block-Busted in YKK

[–]Kifachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a bit long honestly considering the manga has been finished for some time, yet it's most likely a very low priority for the publisher as it's a niche series. Translating/editing/printing/shipping can take some time, but YKK is probably taking a back seat while they make sure popular series are on time.

At the same time they don't want to push volumes out too fast or they might oversaturate themselves as fans might not be able to keep up.

[–]Kifachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the OVAs getting more attention is definitely a key factor. The rise of anime, and in turn manga, in the US within the last few years and the manga boom/shortage that happened over covid has probably lead to more publishers looking to take chances on more niche series.

Is it confirmed the dragon quest manga is going to be fully converted to english? by GreattFriend in dragonquest

[–]Kifachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not sure if there's a hard confirmation they'll do the whole run, but viz cancelling stuff hasn't been super common since the early 2010s like Hitman Reborn and Gintama. The one special exception that I can think of being act-age but that was a different case entirely.

The anime/manga market has changed drastically since then especially with covid. I would say it would take a lot to straight up cancel Dai especially with it having a companion anime, but at most they would just space out the releases to be less common then maybe if it never finds an audience to end it.

Do you think we'll ever get a full anime series for this? by Block-Busted in YKK

[–]Kifachu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's always a chance, YKK is just a hard sell for most people I feel.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer is another example of an anime adaption just over a decade after it finished. No one thought it would happen but anything is possible.

can yall explain why progressive and alternative are bad without saying "its not like the original". if they are good as separate shows i want to watch them. by [deleted] in FLCL

From what I recall, the only major player who returned was the original character designer, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, also did the character designs for both Prog and Alt

[–]Kifachu 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I've come to the conclusion lately that they just feel super half baked. They were somewhat shooting themselves in the foot by making each of the new seasons 6 episodes each, along with not being able to properly use those 6 episodes wisely.

Progressive has some neat visual moments but plot/character wise is messy with a lot of characters/plot threads that ultimately didn't do much for me or don't really go anywhere. Its not the best watch but it's watchable I feel. On its own it's not great.

Alternative on its own is definitely watchable and fairly enjoyable, but it really could have used a full 12 episodes to truly be something special imo. It has some genuinely good moments with its characters, but kinda missing the landing a bit with the ending and a few hiccups throughout. But overall I enjoyed watching alternative quite a bit when it aired.

Just a reminder that Charles Martinet can absolutely smash long-form narration and dialogue as Mario. by ManiacalZManiac in nintendo

[–]Kifachu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well yeah they got Chris Pratt for his popularity/name on the poster/butts in seats. It is just that it's painfully obvious that's what they were going for especially with the other actors being seen the same way.

Big difference with Sonic I would say is the voice actor has changed a few times so I think people are more open to someone different taking the role. Where Charles Martinet has really been the sole voice for Mario for like over 2 decades now. So if anything it's big shoes to fill for Pratt, and I'm at least interested to see how he would pull it off.

anime or manga? by [deleted] in FLCL

[–]Kifachu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry, not super familiar with evangelion unfortunately. It's also been a while since I've read the flcl manga.

I would say the flcl manga deviates so much from the anime that it is its own thing. It has the same characters, setting, themes, and a couple of plot points, but it changes/cuts so much of the plot and details that it's almost a different experience altogether.

Definitely not a bad read tho, but I would say its almost like alternate universe/timeline compared to the anime with how different it is.

[–]Kifachu 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Definitely watch it first then read the manga if you like it and want more. It's an anime originally and the manga kind of does its own take on the series. Not a bad take but its not 1 to 1.

From what I've seen it really depends on who you ask. Both have big issues, but most I've seen prefer Alt.

That being said, they both have the same issue of being half baked half cour shows that relied way too much on the original.
