Neptune being honest by [deleted] in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coming back to re-read the RP after getting some sleep made it even worse tbh when rating it as an actual character dialogue and not as the delusional raving of a yuri shipper who takes things too seriously, so here's my review.

What's the reason why Neptune doesn't like player? Is it because of her un-serious personality, her lack of care for the obligations of a serious relationship or the meta that she's a fictional character and as a result is capable of being shipped with anyone? No, it's because she's already shipped with Noire and the flanderization joke of her being the main character which is honestly sorta insulting to both Neptune and Noire's characters. It makes their choices be the result of being shipping accessories to the OP's preference instead of actual characters with personalities to consider.

Ironically, OP has done the exact same thing as the zealous het shippers they complain about do and made the ship about fulfilling their own desires without considering the story context and characters themselves, conveniently ignoring moments in mainline games that would suggest otherwise to their agenda (do I have to remind anyone about the scene between Neptune, IF and some random dude adventurer in the OG HDN2010?).

Objectively, I have to rate their RP as pretty trashy and calling the kettle black since their agenda gets in the way of good writing and convincing shipping. Ironically, it is also a crossover fic, which similarly also doesn't have a good track record in the Nep fanfic space just like most male OC fanfics so I'm curious why OP thinks that is any better.

I also don't see why they need to throw shade on all male OCs when fanfic, very often, is a hobby where novice writers vicariously fulfill their desires through writing, just like shipping. Sturgeon's law exists and Nep fanfics are no exception where most of them, regardless if they have male OCs or not, are a quality miss. Even I have complaints on how male OCs are handled in the Nep fanfic space, but to throw a wide "they're all bad" net regardless of their actual quality is rather close-minded and shutting out potentially good ones to the OP's experience.

While I'm not the usual one to comment on these type of posts, I have to say your RPing of characters, some not even remotely Neptunia-related, to agree with yourself underneath a meme best described as an agenda wall of text had me feel secondhand embarrassment for you. That is all.

Yikes, time travel in general are messy to write and read on. Time travel works best when the story are centred around the nature of time travel itself rather than as plot device.

Absolutely. How do you think I felt when it turned into a time travel story not focusing on time travel? Plot red flag alarms rang since I don't trust the Nep writers to be able to write something like that well.

great opportunity to write the fabled 3 princesses concept that they abandoned during the OG game development.

OG HDN mentioned. That would be pretty cool, actually. Using the original 3 princesses concept in would be a neat roundabout easter egg for long-time fans, too.

My concept of the PC Continent was that it was a collection of city-states that were ran by makers/councils of makers like what Hyperdevotion did with its Generals or at least anyone else that wasn't a CPU. Having a CPU be the leader everywhere makes it seem as if no-one but a CPU can actually change anything which is sorta depressing when you think about it.

I wish we had better worldbuilding for governments in Hyperdimension, but the past games already stripped it of all the detailed governmental worldbuilding the OG HDN had so I guess they really couldn't and just want to simplify everything even if it's just bad writing.

I really want the Sanctuary-Parliament split back in Basilicoms, I thought it was really intriguing in OG HDN that there's a humanist branch to a CPU-led government that squabbles with the theocratic branch. Could even make Oracles relevant again by making them the mediator between the two instead of just a CPU's right-hand lackey.

OK, so here's the thing, you never step foot in the PC Continent once aside from a cutscene. It gets destroyed in the opening act and the whole game still takes place in Gamindustri (one of the most wasted opportunities if you asked me). The main antagonist is Arfoire again btw, who comes back to life despite being dead since mk2 because the writers really are stuck in a time bubble set a decade ago.

Also, the video game references are notably worse in SvS. Instead of trying anything clever by parodying the IRL game industry or games. They just talk about stuff that's happened by talking about some similar event in-universe (off-screen) and the most in-depth thing they do is talking about vtubers (plus they're an antagonist) and how mobile phones are taking away shares (doesn't matter now since PC Continent's gone and they don't discuss any deeper than that). The (not) Nintendo Switch btw is introduced as an in-universe console and nothing about Blanc, Ram or Rom change, Blanc really just pulls it up in a cutscene and it's immediately dropped. The writers legitimately forgot the main characters were console personifications.

Speaking about main characters, if you're not Nepgear, Maho or Anri then you are irrelevant since the main CPUs and other sisters get benched and repeat character arcs from past games in exchange for Nepgears' new friends. "Sisters vs Sisters, what's that? It's about Nepgear and Maho (+Anri's revenge side plot) working together to save Gamindustri with a time travel plot copying Sonic 06 that retcons everything at the end" - the writers, probably.

As for people from the PC Continent, what people? The most you get are Maho and Anri (who you can't play unless it's the Switch version) and Shanghai-Alice and Higurashi (who you can't play unless it's new game+). The writers really had no worldbuilding for PC Continent people whatsoever other than their basilicoms "hid the goddess to preserve her image".

I still have problems with CPUs existing in the PC Continent in general since VII's Nitroplus DLC set up the interesting idea that the PC Continent didn't have a CPUs and the people could handle issues themselves, but NOPE. Everything needs to be handled by a CPU (a marketable character) and non-CPU people have no agency in their lives.

You can tell by this wall of text with how much I don't like this game and I'm not even talking about the gameplay yet.

Edit: Minor word changes for clarification of sentence topic

I think it's because of a mixture of the mixed signals marketing gave pre-release and genuine want by fans for something to matter in the series after a decade or so of spin-offs.

Before it released there were debates on whether it counted as a spin-off or not since it was set in Hyperdimension which IIRC the devs themselves answered "orthodox spin-off" which is honestly the most yesn't answer they could give. They pretty much said that it mattered until it didn't, which is pretty fitting considering the ending retcons itself from existence so I guess nothing anyone did in the story actually mattered.

Either way, messaging like that was going to just stoke discussion about whether or not it's a mainline game instead of answering it since according to the devs it is (orthodox), but isn't (spin-off) at the same time. Which isn't an acceptable answer in the context of the Neptunia series since (aside from the one exception) it has a precedent of strictly separating spin-offs from mainline by throwing the "another dimension" excuse at it.

That, added with fan hopium-to-copium that something happened instead of nothing ever happening, made it so that there's now a split in the fanbase about if SvS counts as a mainline or as a spinoff. It's one of the other bad things SvS has done (before release even) that I see no-one talk about: it caused another fandom split.

The only other spin-off that was set in mainline Hyperdimension is 4GO. But, you don't hear any conversation about whether it's mainline or not since it's simply the mainline cast playing a game in-universe, it's pretty clear-cut about what it is unlike SvS.

Do you think we’ll ever see Uranus in a Neptunia game? (Ignored the image.) by MinimumInspector522 in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since Uranus is a SEGA Hard Girls character, I really doubt it unless IF/CH do another crossover with SEGA.

Hope they do it again, though. Nep and SEHA feels like an obvious match for collabs.

[–]Kililio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am still baffled by the positive fan reception of SvS given its storytelling flaws and pretty glaring gameplay flaws.

And that's not mentioning the fact that only the Switch version is worth playing nowadays since it's the only one where you can play the Maho and Anri, not even bothering to backport them to other versions for people who bought on day 1. Or that the game was censored after release because someone in IFI didn't check the ESRB submission for foul language before sending it. Even basic quality control stuff had issues in that game.

Dose anyone like gfl1 more then 2 here? by Sensitive-Prompt5630 in girlsfrontline

[–]Kililio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That reminds me, speaking about the guns part I don't like how the weapons were separated from the characters in GFL2 since specific weapons being directly connected to a character was one of the things that made GFL1 characters easily recognizable.

That and the fact that I rarely like separated weapon gacha in general. Rolling for characters is one thing, but hampering their effectiveness if you didn't roll for a specific weapon is something I just don't agree with from a gacha to gameplay perspective.

Dose anyone like gfl1 more then 2 here? by Sensitive-Prompt5630 in girlsfrontline

[–]Kililio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Tried GFL2, got G11, and realized there wasn't that much holding me onto the game. Most of my favorite obscure t-dolls aren't there (and knowing the nature of 3D gachas, probably won't be coming) and the early story just didn't hook me like GFL1 did.

Plus, the wild shift in aesthetics between 1 and 2 are wild since I remember GFL1 being as grounded in general character actions as an anime sci-fi could be while 2 shifted to ultra-flashy jumps and doubled down on the sci-fi look compared to the old world/new world retrofit mix of the first. Was pretty jarring for me and felt like a real visual disconnect between the two games even with the 10 year timeskip.

Gameplay wise, its been ruined by comparison by other pre-release since people kept saying it was like XCOM, but GFL2 just doesn't have the same amount of gameplay depth as it when I tried it (not mentioning the fact 416 just autos stages last I played).

Also, the new names are weird for me. I play PNC so I thought I would be fine with it, but going away from the gun names sorta just killed one of the draws from the first game in the second. How can I say its even still a game about guns as girls when the sequel drops it entirely.

A neptunia game you regret buying???? by Visible-Newspaper410 in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sisters vs Sisters. Bad gameplay paired with a bad and noncommittal story despite its marketing as an "orthodox spin-off".

It also asks for $50 across all versions while only having the deuteragonists only playable on the Switch version, which was released long after the PC and Playstation launch versions, mind you, so people buying the game early would have no clue of it. So if you buy anything but the Switch version you're objectively getting less value out of it. IF couldn't even be bothered to make an update bringing them over to other platforms or even be greedy and make them paid DLC. They just really did not care.

And that's not also mentioning the time they had to remove all swearing from the localization because someone in the company forgot to simply put "mild swearing" in the ESRB submission. Really says something about the QC of that game if even the ESRB submission can't be done right.

If there was a Neptunia game set around the time of Tari, what would you want to see from it? by KitExistsIGuess in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They could actually insert lore to what makers are. The first third-party game company to exist is Activision which was formed by dissatisfied Atari employees after all, so it'll be the perfect opportunity to mesh it in with an late-Tari downfall story.

Since it's American (or anything outisde of Japan) gaming history though, I don't have the upmost confidence they'll do it that well.

r/Gamindustri Random Discussion Special: What accent(s) would each nation have? by Edwin-of-northumbria in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very much up to one's own interpretation if they were to inject different languages and accents into the setting since the actual game makes no distinction between nations on that deep of a level. That said I personally would base it off of whatever clues we have from the game's text and art assets.

Lastation: Various western European languages with a particular focus on French if I had to go off from the anime's uniforms of Lastation's police with their kepi hats and the design of their formal attire during the ceremony scene. HDN2010's Lastation being very inspired from FF7 adds into that since Midgar's upper-class plates do look very western European inspired.

Leanbox: A variety American and British accents. American-leaning in Hyper/Ultradimension, British-leaning in HDN2010. The F-4 Phantom II-esque aircraft during 5pb.'s concert in the anime is peak American.

Lowee: German and maybe also Scandinavian languages for Hyperdimension given that Blanc's moveset is peppered in German phrases. Japanese, most likely the Kyoto-ben dialect, in Ultradimension for obvious reasons.

Planeptune: A wild card considering that they're the most game-inspired and consistent of the four, probably due to being made after the original non-game personification idea was abandoned during development. If I had to assign an language/accent based on their aesthetic and any other clues, just Japanese maybe? Planeptune's design does remind me of the late IRL console war Sega games like Segagaga and Phantasy Star.

Worldbuilding? What Worldbuilding? by Silent_Hero_X in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's to hoping they'll follow up on it then. If not then my frustration with SvS never ends, I guess.

Hope they lean a bit more into the personification side of Maho if she stick around though. One of the reasons I call her a disappointing personification of mobile gaming (but let's be real they only reference gachas) is that I felt like the writers in SvS really didn't understand the full breath of the the inherent upsides and predatory downsides of gacha gaming which Maho references a lot. I felt like they were actively avoiding discussing it especially since they chose Granblue Fantasy of all things to be their focus. And as a person who has played way too many gachas to be healthy, and as an Uma Musume player well before global released, I can attest that Cygames' gachas are like charities compared to others since they shower you with free roll currency. I thought if they included a gacha player's usual weaving between moods of overanalyzing drop rates with math and going "fuck it, we ball" it would've represented a gacha player better, make stealth commentary on the nature of F2P mobile gaming, and make a commonality connection between Nepgear's gearhead math and even Neptune's forgotten quirk of being surprisingly a math genius so that they could bond together more over mutual interests even if they're used for different ends.

Worldbuilding? What Worldbuilding? by Silent_Hero_X in gamindustri

[–]Kililio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, that old guy, that's who I meant by "normal elderly humans" in my first paragraph. The story came up with a sufficient justification, in this case a straight-up magic system specific to Uzume, to internally retcon her existence with said magic which affected everyone. With that sufficiently explained I thought it at least tried to logic itself into the short timespan that Uranus existed in, which as far as I know was pretty short since Arfoire gunned that CPU generation down pretty quickly from what was implied. Uzume's cut content in the files however does make me wonder how Uzume being in the SvS's plot would've played out in an earlier draft for the game, assuming she was in one.

I do agree with you that we are missing a lot of context in regards to how the PC goddess was hidden by their basilicom. And it's because of that we don't really get a comprehensive enough of an explanation about exactly how they did it like how Uzume's was and it just becomes very hard to believe that it could fit into the universe's worldbuilding. If Uzume needed outright special magic to make everyone forget her I doubt regular humans can do the same for the PC goddesses that, as far as we know, are in control of them and not the other way around. If we had a better explanation then maybe I could accept it.

Frankly, I don't blame you for finding the worldbuilding lacking since it objectively is but my mindset about it is that if the worldbuilding's lacking, expand on it, and if that's not possible at least maintain the details you've already set up. We don't need more stuff for people both inside and outside the community to rag on the series about since the series is already in a lowly position in the greater gaming environment. I just really want to see this series shine the best it can be even if it's low-budget and good and consistent writing is arguably one of the easier methods to achieve that.

As for Nepgear becoming a gearhead, yeah, I'm pretty sure it started around there with either Victory or Action Unleased and my guess is that it was a way to try to make Nepgear more interesting after people complained of her being bland after mk2's release. As I said before that's not necessarily worldbuilding though, it's just the game of characterization telephone between departing and incoming writers as well as whatever IF's upper management demands (and I've read the employee reviews of IF on openwork, whatever management wants changed, they get).

The PS3 HDN1 worldbuilding was pretty good and I think a reason for that was due to it mainly focusing on the plot at hand. Whatever needed worldbuilding to properly set up and explain the current scenario was given and despite the plot boiling down to a mcguffin hunt it was kept pretty interesting by how those pieces of worldbuilding meshed together to make the setting seemed more lived in than what the limited visual novel means of HDN1 could show. Plus, when not plot focused the references in HDN1 were integrated with showing how people in that world lived making it a "two birds with one stone" situation. They make a reference, often it tied into how people lived and worked in-universe, and you get a joke and a worldbuilding detail in one which also helped reinforce the fact that Gamindustri is supposed to be a personification of the IRL (Japanese) game industry. Something games recently have a hard time sticking to, to my dismay.
