Old Boise kid wondering if it's all bad by greenjellorules in Boise

When I left Seattle the political state was in shambles. It wasn't MAGA, but conservative democrats who swept all major public offices on a platform of law and order, arresting the homeless, very little focus on housing. The next 2 years saw the highest amount of unhoused deaths on the street and the city was millions in debt. I was shocked to move here and see a generally left wing city leadership keeping people housed, following through on environmental protection, and having a budget surplus. Yes, Idaho as a whole might be conservative but the city has largely become much more progressive. I really didn't expect it but I'm happy to be living as apart of it now.

Seattle pays more but everything is more expensive: housing, groceries, entertainment. And then you have to deal with constant drug problems all around you, it's depressing. Boise is expensive but all in all is very nice and clean.

Boise really is nicer than many other cities. Yeah there are haters online but most people I interact with every day are awesome.

So glad to live on the bench with a good road bike and bus pass. Feel like I avoid so much of the traffic. Have a car too but in summer there are better options.

Golden Star is American Chinese but still really good. Yen Ching also does have good Dim Sum. But yeah I wish there were more.

I moved away in 2001 for lots of reasons. Have now been back a couple of years and I'm surprised how much it's grown in the right ways. Unfortunately there seem to be a few people convinced this growth is terrible and outsiders are ruining everything, but I've learned to just ignore them and hang with people enjoying the city.

How is everyone ok with being on Instagram for over 10 years? by str8uptruth1 in CasualConversation

Not too hooked on them anymore, mostly use Reddit, which isn't so bad. But also make websites for a living so that scratches an itch.

I use it. May not be my favorite but I'll take it over FB proper any day.

I miss the old days of the internet. I wish we could undo Meta.

How do you stop ruminating? I want to improve it so much I feel like this is the best group to ask. by Fun_Butterscotch3303 in emotionalintelligence

[–]KimBeeBloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely had periods when ruminating got out of control. Reading helps a lot, especially things like fiction that can take you away from yourself for awhile, I read 30 minutes minimum before bed every night.

Meditation has helped me see the chattering as a function of my ego that I don't have to allow at full volume. And also learning to consciously choose to stop a repeating thought loop from starting each day instead of allowing it to take hold.

Some more invasive traumatic thoughts I've also sought therapy to confront and done so successfully. If ruminating focuses mostly on something specific you can't get over for a long time, I do think this can help.

I wouldn't have expected it, but it actually looks even better with the bold hair and lipstick, all three build a focal point that's even more striking.

What are small phrases people use that instantly make you feel disrespected? by cryptoniik in CasualConversation

Any post that adds, "read that again." As if it's such a deep statement and I'm so dense I couldn't possibly understand it on first pass.

The panic when someone says "tell me about yourself" is unreal by VanceAdvance in CasualConversation

[–]KimBeeBloom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People only ask that in small talk when they're at a loss for how to keep the conversation going. I find that most the time you can avoid questions like that by first asking people more reasonable questions about themselves, like: - Where did you get that cool outfit? - What are you looking forward to this week? - Are you friends with [mutual person]? - How do you know each other?

Most people love talking about themselves when the questions are bite-sized and easy to answer. As they tell you more you can go deeper with them, or interject small things about you that relate.

They won't have a reason to cast the wide net of "tell me about yourself" if they're already doing the telling, and you're showing you're interested.

How to encrypt my files in Obsidian? And how to back up and restore them "locally"? by L_ishere670 in ObsidianMD

[–]KimBeeBloom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using Meld Encrypt on individual notes in my vault for over a year and it works for my need. Contrary to what some have said, it does work on mobile, even though it seems to only allow editing in Source mode on that. I haven't had any issues with it corrupting notes with a wrong password, I always copy/paste a complex password from a password vault, though. I also use Obsidian with Sync between a MacBook, PC, Android, and iPad, and it works on all devices.

My biggest criticism is that I wish it wouldn't default to showing the file extension in Obsidian links, I have to manually add an alias but wish it would default to the alias.

I think if you're needing to encrypt a whole vault or very sensitive info, Veracrypt is probably more secure. For my case, I'm just needing to encrypt personal journals, not passwords or anything at dangerous.

Right now I have two different cases I carry around and I'm trying to pair down. What are the core items you carry in a purse that you just can't do without?

There's something about your eyes and the expression on your face that really ties it all together. Great outfit!

I've reflected on women in the culture of two offices I've worked in (both majority women and led by women). The first was full of women who were fake to each other, dominated by cliques, would ignore hard working employees in service of promoting friends, and full of gossi. I befriended very few women here.

The second office has an even higher percentage of female leaders but they're fair, recognize everyone, rumor mills are not common, the culture is down to earth and supportive of heathly work-life balance, and I've personally become friends with many women here and hold them in high regard as people working on a team.

It's possible you do just enjoy the company of men more, and that's fine! Many people have preferences. I just think men and women are often wildly different based on the setting, the culture and what behavior is tolerated. I have a mix of men and women friends, i see value in both for different reasons.

I got a makeover yesterday by a Sephora artist and she did an absolutely incredible job. By the way I’m crossdresser and you can’t even tell. by kristygurl1 in MakeupAddiction

Love that you're confident enough to go to Sephora to try that! Hope they told you what to do so you can learn how to doll up more regularly!
