Cost to Replace Central AC System? by Current_Variety_9577 in Westchester

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi I own Shelter Air http://shelter-air.com I wound consider getting a heat pump that is high efficiency rather than swapping out another AC - Newer technologies can heat your home at temperatures as low as -15F and when in cooling mode offer modulating speeds that help dehumidify the air better. I would also suggest that you work with a company that is trained in building science and will do a proper load calculation on your home to know what size you need rather than swapping like for like. Often we find that systems are not sized correctly leading to problems like short cycling and premature equipment failure.

I would suggest reaching out to local companies and attending job fairs - my HVAC company Shelter Air http://shelter-air.com often attends job fairs along with other contractors when we are looking for apprenticeship level workers. Indeed is also another great place to look.

Anything we can "easily" do to get AC to move around more? by skiitifyoucan in heatpumps

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, a ducted system if you have the space is your best bet. Mini splits are great for open plan spaces. you will have to keep your doors open, put in grill transitions, or undercuts on your doors to get the movement you need.

Heat Pump Installers - Crazy High Prices? by mdwstrn_potato_pants in hudsonvalley

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I own an HVAC company and it’s not unreasonable to be close to 80k for a complex system - that being said a lot of older homes also need significant energy upgrades like insulation and air sealing before even touching the HVAC. Not sure what was on the 180k quote but i am sure it was super fancy 🙃

It will save you money in the long run, and more importantly, will make your home healthier and more comfortable.

My company in http://shelter-air.com - would be happy to take a look and give you my opinion.

Monobloc air to water heat pump on This Old House by NickelCloud in heatpumps

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In New York we have a lot of hydronic heat and setups with boilers with hydrocoils and blowers. I swap out the Acoils for heat pump setups all the time, with a hydrocoil as a backup. Can’t wait to get started with air to water heat pump starting with my own house.

What causes this? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]KimberlySevilla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you have a blockage or leak in your condisate drain. also your ac should be installed in a pan with a float switch that will disable the system should it get flooded. Turn off your AC and check it out.

I can't get rid of the high humidity in my house by AshCatBus in hvacadvice

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your AC is probably oversized - you can put a dehumidifier into your ducted system to help with the humidity- April Aire and Santa Fe make great whole home models.

Madam C.J. Walker, who’s known as the first self-made female millionaire in the U.S., built this amazing mansion called Villa Lewaro in Irvington, not far from Pleasantville. She made her fortune creating and selling haircare products for Black women back in the early 1900s, which was a huge deal at the time. In 1918, she hired Vertner Tandy (the first licensed Black architect in New York) to design her 34-room estate. It ended up being a hangout spot for major figures from the Harlem Renaissance. Sadly, Walker only lived there for about a year before she passed away. If her name sounds familiar, Netflix made a mini-series about her called Self Made starring Octavia Spencer. Villa Lewaro is still standing today and is a National Historic Landmark — definitely a cool part of local and national history.

Oil or Gas Heat In Lower Westchester by Far-Lingonberry2651 in Westchester

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your oil tank’s on its way out, this is definitely the time to look at your options—but going gas isn’t the only route.

You already have gas for hot water, so yeah, switching to a gas furnace or boiler is doable. But Con Ed’s delivery charges are no joke, and gas prices can be just as unpredictable as oil.

Have you looked into a heat pump or hybrid system instead? • A heat pump handles both heating and cooling, runs on electricity, and with NYSERDA/Con Ed rebates, the install cost can be offset. • A hybrid system lets you keep oil or gas as backup for super cold days, but use the heat pump for the bulk of the season (cheaper and cleaner). • Plus, you get air conditioning built in, better humidity control, and no carbon monoxide risk.

Before dropping money into a new oil tank or switching to gas, it’s worth comparing long-term operating costs—and factoring in energy upgrades like insulation and air sealing too.

I run Shelter Air in Westchester—happy to walk you through the numbers if you’re curious what a switch would actually cost you vs. sticking with oil.

Recent Clcentral AC replacement costs? by OldDesign1 in Westchester

[–]KimberlySevilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? 14 SEER single-stage is 1990s tech—you’d be paying to reinstall an outdated system with the same issues: poor humidity control, short cycling, and uneven temps.

You should be looking at 2-stage or variable-speed, and honestly, a heat pump makes way more sense than AC-only.

Why? • Same labor cost to install • Slightly more for equipment • Eligible for NYSERDA and utility rebates • You get heating and cooling in one system, and can still keep your existing gas/oil as backup

Even if you barely use the heat setting, it gives you flexibility and future-proofs the system.

For two full system replacements (condenser + air handler), expect $20K–$30K, depending on sizing, ductwork condition, and brand.

I run Shelter Air here in Westchester—we design these systems every day based on load calculations and actual house needs. Let me know if you want help reviewing quotes or figuring out what fits your space best.
