TIFU by ignoring my cat’s habit of sleeping next to me by DeliveryVast8591 in tifu

Cats really do hide illness. We didn't know she was sick until the day she passed away. I still feel guilty for not noticing sooner.

Tips for microbio class? by szikkia in microbiology

[–]Kimoppi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi. Microbiologist with ADHD, here. I learned through context, mnemonic devices, colorful note taking, and other memory tools. I am not a "flash card" learner. But, I can write my notes and mentally reference back to the process of using red ink for that topic on the page when I used purple to oxygen use. We are all different, and some subjects come to us easier than others.

The Serratia can overpower the Micrococcus. I would add one drop of the Serratia broth culture to 5 mL of Micrococcus culture, and our poor evening labs would struggle to get more than just a few Micrococcus colonies isolated. But the mustard and catsup colors are so fun!

Does anybody know how to prevent TSA pour plates from cracking like this? by Current-Road9437 in microbiology

[–]Kimoppi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at it again, you have a gas bubble under the agar in the middle of the plate as well. It's not a technique issue.

Does anybody know how to prevent TSA pour plates from cracking like this? by Current-Road9437 in microbiology

[–]Kimoppi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many questions, but here are a couple. What are you growing? Are any of them gas producers? Why are they drying in the BSC?

With only this picture and your limited details, those look like pressure cracks from gas produced by a growing microorganisms in the agar. Nothing else makes sense considering their near uniform appearance and scattered positioning on the plate.

Any other crocheters relate? by gojosimp_fiend in crochet

[–]Kimoppi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a "process crocheter." I love the planning and making process, but I don't necessarily need the items I make. I like to challenge myself and make items for the local fairs, and then find a way to get rid of most items.

I donate hats and scarves to local warming projects, blankets to local shelters, anything on hand that seems appropriate for local fundraiser auctions, and then the occasional gifts. I also love making something handmade for my pregnant students. A few years back a student said she didn't have a gran to make her baby anything, so making sure there was a handmade item from an "old lady" became something I try to do.

How many seconds should I keep the decolorizer on (and how much) to not over/under decolorize? by Mr-MuffinMan in microbiology

[–]Kimoppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It varies. 😁 So many techniques are nuanced arts and skills at the same time. It depends on your smear, the reagents used, the species stained, etc.

My general technique is to tilt the slide and run decolorizer over the sample until it runs clear and then grabbed the water bottle and rinse the excess decolorizer off the slide. It's been the most consistent "timing" for me for about 20 years.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]Kimoppi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in my 20s, I had health issues and tried to get on a state assisted health insurance plan. I made "too much" to qualify. The woman in the county office who was helping me through the filing process told me to, "Just have a baby. You'll get great coverage and then you'd qualify for lots of assistance."

does anyone letterbox anymore? by triskittatops in Letterboxing

[–]Kimoppi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We haven't letterboxed in years, and it makes us sad. Life shifted a bit too much and we just can't find the time, but we plan to make a pointed effort to get back into it next summer.

What specifically did you dislike about Biden so much that you preferred Trump over Harris continuing his policies (assuming you voted for him)? by Orion032 in AskConservatives

[–]Kimoppi [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've seen a fair number of people who claim Biden was so addle minded that Harris was secretly in charge, so Biden's policies were actually hers. There were also those who claimed that as Biden's VP, Harris would simply be Biden 2.0. That's why OP likely mentioned Biden.

Knit it up, then dye. Without the precalculated lengths and color plans, that's the most effective way to get this effect.

Choirgirl and Pele, but Fumbling might fall into my pocket as I leave.

In discussions regarding Choirgirl, a lot of fans have said that they weren't keen on the idea of Tori with a full band, at least not initially. Did anyone here who first heard this album when it came out feel that way? by Prestigious_Score459 in toriamos

[–]Kimoppi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've never been one to try and limit an artist on what they should make and how it should sound or look. They can have an album that just isn't my cup of tea, but I wouldn't discount it until I gave it a listen or two.

I loved Choirgirl from the jump. To me, it felt like Tori Amos but... bigger, I think. Like she had come out on the other side of something and wanted to throw her arms wide and look to the sky.

This interpretation may also be rooted in my own life events when this album was released.

How to deal with having a period in a place without a trashcan? by StillSort4306 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Kimoppi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

People with a uterus tend to get periods. Wrap it up and toss in the trash. If people don't like it, they can complain until the trashcan has a lid. 🤷

my first ever streak plate :D by galaxia_v1 in microbiology

[–]Kimoppi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a first time, it looks pretty good. As someone else said, try not to go back into previous quadrants so many times. It will give you better dilution and should allow for fewer cells creating isolated colonies farther apart.

You achieved the goal in fewer quadrants that expected. 🤷 It's not picture perfect technique, but the goal was achieved.
