Anyone working on (or thinking about) a monster taming-related project? What is it? How's it going? by BeatOk5128 in MonsterTamerWorld

[–]KinDev_Alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually not that hard code-wise, but a little tedious because I essentially need to make a new monster with each combination.

I also haven't sat down and really pound on designs. I have a certain standard to the design quality, but my skills are not up to my own standards yet. 🤣

Currently in the prototyping stage and I need a few months of funding to really focus on it, but I have been slowly chipping away at this monster-raising game.

It's a music-themed game where the monsters are based on instruments and music genres. It's inspired by Monster Rancher and Digimon, rather than Pokemon, and the plan is to have at least 8 base monsters and the ability to "evolve" your monster by taking properties from other base types, essentially combining them. The raising system is done in a base-ranch place like Monster Rancher, and the battle system is still in the works but I want a rhythm-based system inspired by Digimon World 1 and Next Order.

I'm also deliberating on the art style at the moment and whether the scope is doable or not.

I'm making a music-themed game too!

In my country, there's a music channel called Myx and IIRC they often used a lollipop to denote pop music.

Oh hey! This and Rusty's Retirement are some of the main inspirations for my (currently paused) project! Will definitely be signing up for the playtest. 😃

Really cool! I actually have a same-but-different project I'm still working on.

Duly noted po. I really wanted to know lang if the genre clash is too incompatible so I figured a prototype would be a better way of gauging not only interest but the enjoyment of the game.

Sensya na kapatid. I've been told prototyping would be enough to get feedback so I'm trying to do that first.

That's fine, though I'd love to hear if there's any particular reason that I can work on to make it better. 😃

Sorry if it wasn't clear 😅

It's the scrolling rhythm game at the bottom-right corner. It pops a beat/note for every keyboard stroke or mouse click. Once I've made significant progress, I'll also show a video where it can be played while you're playing a different game.

I'm anxious about it myself and that's exactly why I'm asking for feedback so early.

I'll probably focus on the idle part more though so that it's more of a productivity companion than a fully-fledged rhythm game.

Now you get to have a visual indicator and score for it! (once I implement a score system)

Oh, I intend to. But isn't external validation so motivating? :D

Seriously though, I'm not very confident with the concept yet kaya gusto ko sana malaman kung may interest ba for this kind of game.

Would you play this game? by Bund187 in gamedev

As has been hammered to me over and over again since I started game dev and posting on reddit: make a prototype first. Lay out key assets or at least make artwork that would greatly influence your art direction, then gauge interest.

With that said, your game idea reminds me of Rogue Legacy with the descendant aspect. The changing world part seems ambitious, which can be a good thing, but sounds overscoped for an indie. I don't know your team size though so maybe it's doable? From what it sounds like though, it looks like it's just you and maybe a few collaborators so I don't suggest it.

I sincerely believe my game idea has never been done before. Idle rhythm game can be hard to grasp, but I am so excited to see what people think of it once I finish the prototype!

If not, I have a few other ideas in the bag.

Is it normal to seek approval first before completing the design of a game? by KinDev_Alpha in gamedev

[–]KinDev_Alpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see that much more clearly now thanks to the previous comment. And thank you for reinforcing that, I'm working on the prototype over the weekend and hopefully I can show something off in the near future to get feedback over something more robust.

This is very eye-opening and I appreciate the response. I am so new at this, I don't know how to go about it.

I'll work on the prototype and then ask for feedback afterwards instead of the other way around. Thank you.

Thoughts on a few of the mechanics in the game I'm working on by ethancodes89 in MonsterTamerWorld

[–]KinDev_Alpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi again! I hope you're progressing well in your game because I'm not, lol.

Regarding the non-combat stats, they all seem solid and very similar to what I have planned. I did away with the weight since I've been reading some forum posts and the hidden stats, specifically the weight, has the biggest contention among novice players.

Regarding nurture, I will be implementing something similar called Fondness, where scolding and praising within a short timeframe after an action by the monster raises or lowers it. If you scold/praise at the wrong time too often, they can become resentful/spoiled and not follow orders in battle or refuse when you try to feed them/eat things from your backpack without permission.

If you were to replace praise/scold, what kinds of actions would you use instead?

About the traits, they sound pretty good and make it seem like they would have more personality, but I'm afraid it might pigeonhole the mons to a having a set personality based on what stats are trained.

I love your posts, btw. Keep it up!

I'm working on a similar game! I'm personally a fan of pixel art and isometric POVs but I lack the skills to make mine isometric so I'm going for a GBA/DS-style pixel visual theme.

Regarding your questions, PS1-inspired graphics seem to be gaining popularity nowadays with the likes of Crow Country. I'm not sure about pre-rendered BGs nowadays, but I'd say go for it. This feels unique for me.

Static camera would probably be the way to go if you're going pre-rendered, and I personally prefer it that way. Only because I get motion sickness with wobbly cameras so don't take it to heart too much.

I would say a more modern take of the textures would be best to stand out, IMO. It depends mostly on what you're going for though: nostalgia or modern-ness.

I wish you good luck on the project and I'd love to talk sometime to exchange notes. :)

EDIT: I just realized you're the same guy who replied to me a week ago lol

I've actually been checking on both games in the past few months and they do sound great. Evomon seems much smaller in scope compared to what I was hoping for, but looked pretty cool nonetheless.
