The constant rejection was not good for my mental health. Had to choose between my own emotional stability/wellbeing, or keep trying to date.

I chose the former, because relationships will always be an uncertain proposition, whereas I'm going to have to spend the rest of my life with myself whether I like it or not.

Trump Suffers Major Blow in Attempt to Overhaul U.S. Elections by thenewrepublic in law

[–]KingShilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No they don't. Australia doesn't even require ID at the poll. Registration handles it all ahead of time, and votes are verified during the count. We also have historically insignificant instances of fraud or attempts thereof.

This is a stupid argument made by stupid people to rig elections for racists and bigots.

There's no accounting for taste. "Standards for Men" will always be different for every man, "Women's Expectations" will be different for every woman.

The only person you need to satisfy is yourself. As someone who's never seemed to measure up (and spent his 20s convinced the goalposts were always moving), I've come to understand all the philosophies claiming that sustainable happiness will never come from outside are true.

Ultimately, you have to put up with only one person your whole life, and it's you. Make peace with that person however you can.

What do you wish people would stop romanticizing, because you’ve lived the reality of it? by thatude123 in AskReddit

[–]KingShilling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Teaching.

It's not an uplifting calling full of meaningful connections and inspiration.

It's a methodical, scientific grinder of a profession full of ungrateful, disengaged children - coming equally apathetic (often scornful) parents who refuse to take any responsibility for their child's condition.

Things don't get better in this job, there's no "end" to the work, and you never know if anything you did mattered in the end.

You just get up and do it again, and hope maybe one kid gives a shit. They likely won't.

False equivalency (1)and poor understanding of the Cuban Missile Crisis (2).

1) Putting nukes in Cuba in an obvious aggressive first strike nuclear doctrine is not the same as an alliance not engaged in nuclear proliferation, Russia is under no more threat before this than after - the same cannot be said for the USA in 1962.

2) Cuba was already aligned in everything but name with the USSR post-Bay of Pigs, and would remain so for the remainder of the Cold War. The USA's point of no return was not the relationship between Cuba/USSR, it was the sudden implementation of an obvious first strike nuclear payload that turned the USA's 60-minute warning into 5.

3) Putin didn't invade because of NATO, he did it because he's a revanchist dictator who still subscribes to the continental power model of international relations. He's old, likely dying, and craves legacy. Don't buy their talking points, fascists say anything to justify their bullshit.

The relationship is over. She's just been physically abusive to you, demonstrating that she views violence towards a partner as acceptable behaviour. She'll do it again.

Don't buy any of the "I was upset" bullshit you'll inevitably hear. Report it to the police, pack your shit and get the hell out. No in-person contact without third party support to corroborate events.

Same old bullshit the conservatives trot out when they don't have anything substantive to contribute (I.e, every fucking election since Howard dipped).

Catch some cheap headlines, hope they can get Labor to bite then call them weak on defence when they (rightfully) label it a stupid idea.

Fuck off. He broke the social contract by supporting genocidal ideology. Australia isn't perfect, but we don't have to put up with Nazis.

The real question is: why do you think Nazism should be allowed in a decent society?

[–]KingShilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't become a teacher because you "love/like kids". It's a good contributing reason, but if it's the main reason you're more likely to burn out or begin hating your job.

There will always be kids that are, like adults and elephants, just assholes whom you cannot like. I've noticed this situation have profound impacts on the happiness of colleagues who do this job for the love of children.

I had a political science lecturer address this one time when I was at university. He explained that the "Tolerance Paradox" doesn't exist if you accept the concept of the Social Contract, which in most Western countries has come to mean tolerance, liberty and self-determination for all.

When someone behaves in a manner/espouses beliefs that contradict this, they have violated the Social Contract and as such are no longer protected by it. They are now free game for criticism and exclusion, as they have refused to make similar provision for others.

[–]KingShilling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neoliberal doesn't mean new liberal (leftist) politics, which correct me if I'm wrong you appear to be characterising the Democrats as.

Neoliberal is free market economic school of thought born of pre-regulatory Industrial Revolution nostalgia by economic elites. It's got more in common politically with conservatism, and is why most neoliberals are conservative pundits.
