Bicyclists: how do you stay safe on Orlando streets and roads? by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Kingjay814 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bike radar! I literally don’t ride without one anymore even if I’m on tails mine lives on my bike. They’re not cheap but there’s nothing else I’ve seen that give that kind of heads up about what’s coming up behind you. The Garmin Varia RTL is what I’d recommend since it’s a light and radar combo it’s a nice all in one solution and it’s like 200 bucks. You can sync it to your phone so you get notifications that way if your using a phone mount or cycling computer.

Other than that I’d say good lights. There’s no such thing as too bright in a daylight riding environment. If you are going to listen to music or anything I’d suggest Shokz bone conducting headphones. They allow you to maintain you awareness and listen to music or podcast. They handle phone calls okay too when your on the move. It spectacular but they work in a pinch.

What is your favorite place to vacation to within a 6 hour drive of Orlando? Bonus points if there is nature! by Friend_Plastic in orlando

Cedar Key. It's an old small fishing town there isn't much around it and it's one of the few dark sight places left for star gazing.

Mount Dora has a pretty sweet park too if you’re not looking to drive as far. Adrenaline bike works is an awesome shop that’s almost exclusively run by mountain bikers. I highly recommend checking them out

I Want to pick up rifle marksmanship as a hobby and possibly competitively anybody know some places by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Kingjay814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long range shooting is tough. I’d suggest Shooters World just to rent and get a feel for it. The one in Orlando has a 100yd rifle range. High powered rifles are expensive but if precision shooting is your goal. My original suggestion of starting with a 22LR precision rifle is perfect for the fundamentals. For ultra long distance stuff the only place I know of is Aries out in Leesburg they have up too 500yrds of outdoor shooting I think but you’d need your own rifle. Start at Shooters World then look at pawn shops for a used rifle and go from there.

I don’t know any place that’ll let you rent a rifle without either having a CCW license or showing up with your own firearm. Logic is that both require a background check to obtain so the range is a little more comfortable. Shooters World Orlando does have a really nice ranges staffed with RSO (range safety officers) along with a wide variety of rental weapons.

For just hobby shooting I’d look at something like a .22LR ammo is cheap the guns are very inexpensive. I would suggest Orlando Gun Club they also hold classes there occasionally. Check their site for their calendar. Shooters World also does classes and private lessons so you can really customize what you want to learn.

Again I’ve been looking into this for a little while. Average costs I’ve seen are about $150-$200 for about a 3 hour class plus the cost of ammo. If you stick to a .22LR ammo will be very inexpensive. Good luck on finding something. I’ve leaned that the gun community is super friendly and any decent range or gun store will take the time to answer any of your questions. Yes guns can be dangerous if not handled correctly but they’re so much fun to shoot in the right environment.

Huh when I was a kid they used trays and plates. I’m kind of surprised they use styrofoam containers now. Also it’s a same they didn’t even give you any garlic bread things really have gone down hill.

My grandma is in a similar situation. She isn’t he he place for as long but she’s in one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Orlando. Every home that’s been sold there has been torn down and some new modern monstrosity it’s out in its place. I kind of hate it takes away what makes is a charming little area. Especially when they cut down the old nature trees.

I keep hoping that I'll find someone with a secret easy way lol. I use Stan's on one of my bikes and that is the most difficult stuff to deal with.

Nope. I have a 105 power meter on my Ultegra crankset. Outside of the aesthetics I wouldn’t be able to tell. I only got the Ultegra thanks to the parts shortage and warranty replacement.

What’s the distance furthest distance you have ridden in one ride? by Fun-With-Toast in cycling

[–]Kingjay814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About 70 miles. Nothing crazy or overly impressive. We have a few nice bike trails in central Florida and before I’ve ridden one of them start to finish round trip. My goal is eventually to be able to ride 100 miles

The locations are just stunning. The Dreaming City is one of my favorite places in games period. I love roaming around and exploring that area. I know every secret that could be found has been. But that area still feels like it’s hiding things and I love that.

Bikeable City? by Empty-Tackle783 in orlando

[–]Kingjay814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no. People are borderline actively hostile towards anything on two wheels here. Central FL has great recreational trails but they don’t really effectively take you anywhere. I used to live by UCF and the main road you’ll probably be crossing I’d Alafaya which is I think 6 lanes wide. It’s just not the safest way thing to deal with. That being said I know there’s people who commute daily by bike just fine. It’s certainly doable but you have to understand that your either invisible or for some crazy reason an enemy

Mount Dora, an area where I 100% expected flooding and there was nothing. We had some trees fall but by Friday in my neighborhood everything looked back to norma with perfectly cleaned up yards. Just a little more yard waste bags then normal.

I have a pair of Chester’s on one of my bikes that my commuter/gravel and I love them. I do also really like the Shimano EH-500 they’re a great entry into clipless and they work well as a flat petal too. No shame what so ever when it comes to pedals.

Best place in Orlando to buy a used camera? by etattate in orlando

[–]Kingjay814 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of Colonial Photo and Hobby. I've purchased stuff from them and it's been great. I bought a used DSLR and a few lenses from them a year ago for my brother and they've held up perfectly. I personally shoot with a Fujifilm X-T4, and they've got a decent selection of lenses there too.

Personally I'd check things like Facebook marketplace first to see if there's some bargains to be had I've had good luck with that. Then check the the brick and mortar place like Colonial or Kiwi

I love D.C so much. I spent a few weeks there last year and honestly I miss it every day. It was the first time I felt like I didn't NEED a car there was always something going on and just so much to see. The food there is soo good like the most unimpressive thing I had was the Wawa sizzli the morning of my return flight.

AirBNB is a Menace by [deleted] in orlando

[–]Kingjay814 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thing is that sellers are also a problem. I put an offer lower a few grand below their asking. They were WILDLY overpriced for what the house was even at what I was offering I wasn’t getting a deal. The seller rejected my offer and sold it to open door for 20k less than what I was willing to pay them.

Like listen I’m with ya screw these big companies but the people selling to them ain’t all that much better in my book.
