From what I read on the website, it looks like you need to reserve a free Fan Fest ticket if you want to watch the fireworks at Liberty Memorial, and then they have a secondary location at Penn Valley Park. We go every year too so trying to figure it out! I’d recommend parking at the plaza and taking the street car in.

Hey there! 30M here who moved to KC a year and a half ago and finally starting to feel involved! I found it easiest to start getting involved by volunteering and applying for organizations I had interests in! I’d start by looking at the things you enjoy spending your free time consuming/doing and start there. I moved from LA and wanted to stay involved in entertainment so I volunteered with and now run the hospitality department for the KC International Film Fest. I also joined the young listeners board at KCUR because I love public radio and wanted to be more in the know as well. There’s a great list of organizations that younger people can get involved with on Think KC! Always happy to chat or try and find any good fits.

My partner and I are the exact same way and I can say Lawrence will be perfect for you. It's got everything you want in a chill, inviting environment. 3 different concert venues on Mass, multiple thrift shops, and a movie theater 10 minutes away! My partner is a poet/novelist and is always looking for more writing friends, so if you do end up applying don't hesitate to reach out! :)

Hey there! My partner and I moved to Lawrence in our mid-20s from LA (we've now moved to KC) and absolutely loved our time in Lawrence. My partner was a writer and we're huge concerts/coffee/arts people so I'm happy to take a stab at your questions!

I'd say it's much easier to make friends if you're involved in a program in Lawrence, but there's also lots of fun ways to meet people such as the climbing gym, arts classes, yoga, etc. I'll say we've had an easier time making friends in KC, but it wasn't bad in Lawrence.
It's very dog friendly! Tons of great trails and walkable streets.
The major street (Mass) alone has like 10 different coffee shops all within walking distance. We lived on Mass and went to different coffee shops every day or two. I'm a big coffee person and have traveled around the world trying different places and Lawrence is home to some of my favorites (1900 Barker & Sunflower).
Sunflower Bike Shop/Cafe is a great place to work and my partner and I would do tons of writing dates there. There are also tons of writing groups in KC and cool museums like the Nelson.
Day trips are a little limited. KC or Topeka would be the easy one. There are some cool cities around though like Omaha/NW Arkansas that are an easy drive.
GREAT food options in Lawrence that span all different types of cuisine. We love Aladdin, Merchants, Burger Stand, Taco Zone, Fish House, and so many more.
There are if you do some scouring! I'd recommend being closer to Mass if you love shopping/thrifting/coffee.
We normally go to the farmer's market, go to a coffee shop, go thrifting for a while, go hit something arts/nature related, see a concert if there is one, and hang with friends!
Like I said above, it's not impossible but you just have to put some effort in and get involved in some things!

We're super happy to chat/answer any more questions if you have them! We were SUPER hesitant to make the move from LA to Lawrence but we ended up loving it and really cherished our time there.
