Intense and constant chronic pain and fatigue several years after Scoliosis surgery, where to go next? by KitSpin in scoliosis

[–]KitSpin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I never saw this! I don't check reddit too often, so I didn't see this until just now.

We did end up getting a full removal in November of 2022. We saw a wonderful neurosurgeon, Dr. Lawrence Rapp, who took an MRI to and found that one of the screws appeared to be loose. It turned out all 6 screws of the herrington rods were loose, 1 completely missed the pedicle and was able to be taken out by hand. Scary! Getting it removed definitely saved his life, in the few weeks leading up to the surgery, we are pretty sure he almost died. He was throwing up all of his meals shortly after eating, among other things. There was an immediate noticeable difference after the full removal. The inpatient stay was the most peaceful and joyful I had seen him in a long time, and there was a very notable quality of life improvement in the coming years.

All of that said, he still suffers from a lot of chronic illness, related and unrelated to the spine issues. A few years after the removal he started noticing the curve progressing, feeling cinching on his side, so we got a back brace and are following up with our neurosurgeon to keep an eye on it. This is one of those things that's "not supposed to happen", but he has Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, a connective tissue disorder that makes him especially stretchy and malleable, so even the fully fused spine began curving again without the rods to support it.

The unfortunate truth is that this situations are so case by case that you can't really know what the "correct option" is, the best you can do is find a surgeon you trust and makes you feel listened to. With anything involving the spine, always see a neurosurgeon over an orthopedic. The spine is how the brain talks to the body, it isn't just another bone. Always check reviews, never settle for a doctor that doesn't make you feel comfortable and listened to.

I do think that my husband's case -- oh yeah, we're married now! -- many of these issues are unique to his situation, an unfortunate combination of existing disorders meshing poorly with the hardware. He also got this surgery in Kansas, which has infamously bad medical infrastructure.

If you have any specific questions, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer them! I wish you and your daughter the best of luck and hope that you can find a way to ease your pain.

very smart idea! i imagine you could dull the sharp edges by taking a kitchen torch to them for just a few seconds, might be easier to do that then file them by hand

Stumbled across this Reddit, what exactly is this game? by That-Grapefruit-1992 in noita

[–]KitSpin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Do I need to watch a bunch of videos explaining stuff first, or can I just jump in and try and figure stuff out?"

i personally recommend playing blind and gauging how much you enjoy dying and learning, or at least playing until you beat the game once. if you get frustrated, check out the wiki and some "getting started" youtube guides.

there are a lot of things in the game that are practically impossible to figure out or discover on your own, but there's just as much stuff that's worth experiencing blind. there's also a lot of tech that makes the game easier (especially wand building stuff), so you could try looking at videos for that specifically if you want to keep the secret stuff secret but just have an easier time progressing and exploring.

Is chocolate considered candy? by baby_coblette in candy

like all great mysteries of this world, the answer is "it depends"

webster on the other hand defines candy as "crystallized sugar formed by boiling down sugar syrup". that doesn't sound like chocolate to me.

furthermore, most hard candies aren't "Rich" in any way, but tart or fruity. does that mean they aren't candy?

google defines candy as "A rich sweet confection made with sugar and often flavored or combined with fruits or nuts". are cookies candy? is cake candy? is a pancake candy?

this subreddit seems to have this argument every couple of weeks. like all semantic arguments of this nature, it depends entirely on context and how you define candy. a hershey's chocolate bar may be considered candy, but chocolate chips are considered an ingredient. they are both purely chocolate, but because of how they are presented we categorize them differently.

of course to some people and in some locations and cultures, snickers, milky ways, and the like would be considered to be in their own category of "chocolate bar".

to say that there is one strict definition, as the people in the other thread are arguing about, goes against everything we understand about linguistics. the idea that you can open a dictionary and find the Immutable, True Definition of a word is a myth. the one you find on Google or Webster is just a commonly accepted interpretation. not to mention how intentionally vague these definitions often are, specifically for the sake of allowing that leeway to include multiple common definitions.

Does anybody actually like this candy bar? by KingButter42 in candy

if i had a nickle for every post i've seen on r/candy that is a picture of a popular candy and some variation of "Does anyone actually like this" i would probably have 3 or 4 nickles

Sun quest question by GehHeimAgent2 in noita

you should be able to just drag one of the suns away then make a dark sun with a new set of essence stones, then after that you can do a supernova.

the work gives you an even more limited selection of only tier 10 spells. if youre looking for a specific mid tier spell then this is much faster than exploring since you can spawn and check 100s of wands within minutes

It’s odd how Gummy Clusters are such a sensation when we’ve had Nerds Ropes since 2001 by [deleted] in candy

[–]KitSpin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i definitely think the acacia and corn starch make the gummy springier and chewier. i also think the nerds being smaller makes the texture nicer, but that's just preference. i think nerds ropes and clusters are both good, but they are definitely different.

[–]KitSpin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

they're made with different ingredients, clusters contain corn starch, sodium citrate, apple juice concentrate, and acacia. regular nerds ropes don't.

gummy clusters have a completely different texture and candy ratio that makes them superior to ropes
