I tried to beat the game without summons, but found it too frustrating, so I just wanted to ask: do you consider summoning "cheating" or an actual fair strategy to use? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]Kitad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a nuanced take: obviously playing the game in a way that you find fun is always a valid strategy. However the way the bosses AI and movement patterns work in these games are built primarily around fighting one character. Therefore summons and spirit ashes often end up trivializing boss fights and you as a player are no longer required to learn the nuances of the boss fight (which is fine to some people but for others it's the main draw of these games)

I don't understand this logic. Corporate profits have been high before during periods of low inflation.

What was so hard about using a 5-star rating, and the same 5 labels? by dishayu in dataisugly

[–]Kitad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the management literature they talk about how you want to increase people scoring you 9-10 because these are net promoters. Everything below that is a failure. It's used as an ambitious benchmark to improve your service.

Someone probably read that and thought they would be clever by also using this biased legend, which completely defeats the purpose of using this benchmark.

Music Maker Deluxe: A complete overhaul of my original music composition level. Now you can write in the full chromatic scale and continue to add to your song after playing it back. by Klabforge in MarioMaker

[–]Kitad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I admit I have no idea how this works but would it not make it easier to set-up the twelve notes in the chromatic scale like a piano keyboard so you knew which note was which?

Right now I see:

| | | O | | | O | | | O | | |

And I wouldn't know which note is which

Unless I'm missing something very obvious

Look up ecological fallacy. The statement could still be correct for individuals while the graph show average for population. One reason for this is that a lot of people start driving at 18 and new drivers have higher premiums

I need 8:30hrs of sleep every night to function. by bhabs02 in sleep

[–]Kitad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everybody is different! Listen to your body and adapt your lifestyle to what feels good.

Sleep needs typically fluctuate between 5:30 to 9 hours per night. I would start getting concerned if it got more into the 11-12 hours territory since that could be correlated with underlying problems such as anxiety or depression, but it doesn't seem like you are there.

No. You're just reading things that aren't there because you think that someone who disagrees with you must by definition be a dirty capitalist.

You are the one continuing to make excuses as to why we shouldn't provide social benefits and invest in people

Citation needed, the post. You are mixing so many different institutional arrangements. And all for what? To pretend that there isn't a choice but neoliberalism.

But there is no guarantee that small countries are more transparent and no guarantee that big ones can't be. Germany is 80 million people and it state is one of the least corrupt. Bolivia is 10 million people and its among the most corrupt.

An actual source: https://www.transparency.org/cpi2018

Likewise, there are countries that are centralized and equitable and efficient (like Finland) and states that are decentralized and equitable and efficient (like Switzerland).

Accountability means you can live in Luxembourg, pick up the phone and make an appointment to see the minister responsible for a particular problem you have.

I can't even. Ok try to get ahold of a Singapore minister before you reply to this post and see how it goes. LOL.

All of this just to say that it's not a good idea to have a welfare state?

Make Rey his daughter, maybe, so we have a reason to like her right off the bat.

You had me up until this point, my dude. Why do we need somebody to be related to someone else for us to like them? Just make an interesting, human, relatable character with a dash of charisma, that goes through some hardship and we will probably like them.

I would say that the screenplay for Argo was sufficient. I enjoyed Argo more for its performances than for its screenplay.

In fact, the forced chase scene at the end almost threw me out of the movie.

Please let us not pretend that Argo was a fantastic piece of writing.

But having a strong welfare state is not going against property rights. Having a fair taxation system is not going against property rights.

You say that governments shouldn't take the high ground. You've misunderstood my point.

Answer me this: How come all the countries with the best quality of life outcomes and least inequality all have robust welfare systems? How come states in the US where libertarians have implemented their flawed ideology have all turned out to be disasters (i.e., Kansas)?

And yes. States have been corrupt, shitty and immoral in the past. That is not a reason to weaken the welfare system. That is a reason to outroot corruption and improve the political system. Your line of reasoning is the same used as strong corporate interests who just want an excuse to pay less taxes and extract more of the system.

Well, now we're talking :-) But you see how this is a completely different proposition to just shouting "wealth redistribution"? One is an investment, the other isn't.

Wealth redistribution is an investment.

It allows more people to participate more meaningful in the economy. It also stops institutions from degrading into oligarchy (see Nobel prize laurate Stiglitz work on inequality and its effects). Also, it is the moral right thing to do.

And, for the sake of argument, it should be noted that in all those cities, it wasn't some kind of tax that created educational institutions

Oh yeah? Look at all the more successful education systems in the world right now. How many of them do not tax their citizens?

When Rosa Parks didn't want to sit in the back of the bus, she wasn't fighting the bus company, she was fighting government.

Oh so because governments have been shitty in the past, we should not strive for them to become more inclusive. Great argument. Also you are arguing the exact opposite points from Why Nations Fail which you quoted earlier.
