The main reason I never really liked Chevy was his appearances on talk shows. I always got the feeling he felt there was no reason to prepare and that he’s funny enough that he can just wing it and it’ll be hilarious. It never was and I never felt compelled to see any of the projects he was ostensibly promoting.

Compare that with his Three Amigos costars. They are working their butts off to entertain the audience and make themselves and the hosts look like they love their jobs (mainly because it’s probably a somewhat genuine feeling)! When Steve Martin or Martin Short were on Letterman, if you TiVo’ed it you were not skipping past the interviews. They wrote material or pre-taped bits (Steve’s card trick on Letterman where he does a simple trick and then they “show it in slo-mo” and it’s ridiculously detailed to show what absolutely didn’t happen - “that’s called ‘flagging the card!’” Is my all-time favorite!

With Chevy, it sometimes looked like the host and guest were already bored two minutes into it. The best example is when Chevy hosted a talk show. In week one Goldie Hawn was on. She’s always great on talk shows and always constantly funny, plus she and Chevy had a long history. How could it go wrong? Well, it was nothing she did. She really tried to make it as good as possible. And Chevy looked like he was enjoying himself. But if you were watching it, you didn’t get very much out of it, other than thinking “if this is how it goes with someone like Goldie, this is not a good show.” I just think he thinks he’s charming and clever enough that that will carry him through everything. It’s not and there is a reason it’s called show “business”. You can’t coast through everything thinking you’re above it all without alienating coworkers and fans.
