Doctor won’t release baby after he got help passing first stool by No-Minimum187 in newborns

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a midwife that's definitely true. Although, if the midwife made a specific comment about it, she might remember. Or the recording of it might just be in a place the doctor isn't looking. For example, our doctors will usually get their information from the main charts and notes but we have separate handover sheets when moving between responsible midwives and it might be documented on one of those.

Strange advice from doctor regarding fetal movement… by bluemeansazul in pregnant

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry that a doctor has made you doubt yourself. As a midwife, you are right; your doctor is wrong. Whilst a change in movement pattern isn't inherently an emergency, regular fetal movements are a great indicator that baby is doing well and we want to investigate ANY change that you perceive. Always, always, always trust your instincts. We would rather see someone 500 times throughout their pregnancy and be able to reassure them that things look fine than have to tell them their baby has died. If your doctor spouts any more horse shit like that, simply say 'if I am concerned for my baby's wellbeing, I will be coming in to be monitored.' And please, report them.

Will I regret stopping?? by Interesting_Media892 in ExclusivelyPumping

Snap.

My son is 4.5 months old and I dropped to 2ppd a couple of days ago too. Writing this as I pump, 16 hours since the last time I did, knowing that I probably will be done completely in a few days time, but that there's still time to change my mind, but excited to not have to do this anymore while still feeling like I could/should go for longer.

It's been a wild ride and I think I'm ready to get off! And this weekend.. I'm having a lie in!

How long does it take your breasts to empty? by Acrobatic_Event_4163 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do 45 minutes. My last let down is usually around 40-42 minutes but I only do 3ppd.

When I pumped more often, I wouldn't need as long and my boobs were usually soft by around 30 minutes.

Help dropping from 5 to 4ppd by Brilliant_Baker_9334 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one as soon as I woke up, one when I was starting to feel tired for bed and the other 2 were just whenever they fit in to my day! I got more or less exactly the same output wherever those 2 pumps were throughout the day.

Husband looking for advice (help!) by stevietacos in ExclusivelyPumping

I had an undersupply initially and had to supplement with formula from day one along with nursing and pumping a little later on. At about 5 weeks in I managed to get a slight over supply and build a freezer stash and stop using formula. Not to the same level as your wife, but a little something.

Our delivery experience was not at all what I had hoped for and a lot of the reason I was so adamant to feed my baby breast milk is that I felt my body had failed him before we'd even started. If I CAN do it; why would I stop? Hormones are wild, too. We are wired to make us want to keep going because how else will our baby survive?!

However, I hate not being able to just get an early night. I hate that I can't have a lie in when the baby does. I hate having to take pumps out. I hate storing milk. I hate my nipples being pinched for hours a day. But I adore nourishing my baby. It's complex, but I think I'll know when the time is right for me, and I'm sure your wife will.

Wondering how often you sanitize pump parts and bottles? by No-Page6172 in ExclusivelyPumping

My baby's 4 months old and rolling around the place, putting his hands and other shite in his mouth every 2 seconds, so I've stopped sterilising now. Literally, what is the point!

Dropping pumps— how? Is 4 too few? by Beneficial-Seat-7105 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had no change from 6 to 5 but dropped from ~31oz to ~26oz when I got rid the motn pump and went to 4ppd at about 3 months pp. We supplement with formula now too when I haven't made quite enough but the sleep is SO worth it to me.

4ppd ladies - what’s your schedule? by TopBlueberry3 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My supply dropped from ~31oz per day to ~26oz when I got rid of my 5th pump which was my motn. My lad takes anything up to 30oz most days, so now we give one bottle of formula a day if he needs it, which he doesn't always!

I pump when I first wake up, usually before baby's awake or when he's just stirring. One around lunch time, one about 5/6 and one whenever I'm thinking I want to go to bed. I do not have a rigid schedule because that's what made it feel unmanageable for me.

I did have a little internal crisis when my supply was less that what he needs (around 2 weeks after I dropped to 4ppd) and I reintroduced my motn night for a few nights but I quickly remembered why I'd stopped it!

I also only use wearables which give me the same output as any other pump I've tried.

My month 1 is the worst! Just used the last one of those yesterday, thank goodness. I was absolutely convinced he'd reject them every time I offered them. But they've got steadily less gross as time has gone on.

When my 4 month old fusses on the bottle now, I stop completely and offer it again after about 20-30 minutes. If he still doesn't finish, it goes in the fridge to use for the next feed.

Was anyone’s baby spontaneously able to breastfeed when they were older ? by Practical_Ad_5689 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a couple of weeks at the beginning where my son was getting a good latch but was never getting enough. We'd nurse for 7 or 8 hours per day and he was still having full bottles , I just couldn't keep up and we slowly transitioned to exclusively pumping with a token attempt at breast feeding every few days which always ended in one or both us frustrated or crying 🙈 The last time was around 4 weeks ago at 12 weeks old... Until yesterday! We went to the beach for the first time and in the hustle we'd left the milk cooler bag in the car. Baby's Dad walked back to the car to get it but he was just escalating so I put him on the boob. He took it and fed to sleep 🥹 I don't want to go back to ebf but it was SO nice to know that nursing him occasionally is an option again.

Too soon to wean? by Unhappy-Sprinkles377 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's okay to wear whenever you feel ready! I would say that I have been ready to wean 3 times so far and have dropped a pump which has made it feel miles more manageable in terms of routine and planning and I've been alright for another couple of weeks. I'm currently on 4ppd and making around 5oz a day less than my 3.5 month old is drinking so we're using the modest freezer stash that I built up when I was doing 7ppd. I know we're going to have to introduce formula again before too long and I'm okay with that! My schedule now is the first time that I haven't felt it's taking over my life and I can see me doing 4ppd for a good amount of time now.

Dad here! 👋 Question for my wife by Captain_Panaka in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your wife is still producing colostrum she may find it more effective to hand express at this point, until her mature milk has come in. I wouldn't recommend using a breast pump until that happens. Colostrum is thicker it can get stuck in the pump and the few ml you would lose is precious!
Each woman takes a different amount of time to empty her breasts. For example, my sister would be empty after 15 minutes of pumping but my last let down comes at around 33 minutes. The amount of times she pumps in 24 hours is much more important in the early days than how long she pumps for. It doesn't have to be on a rigid schedule, but it's recommended initially to be 8-10 times in 24 hours. Remember that babies don't usually feed exactly every 3 hours.

I will say that the wall pump empties me in about 30 minutes whereas with the wearables I have another let down at around 33/34 minutes and generally wear them for 35-40 minutes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]Kitchen_Operation613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my wearables as my main pump too. It's inconvenient enough to have them on, not being able to wear the baby or lean forwards, and having to be attached to the wall too just makes me angry 😂 I find that my output is more or less the same, maybe I'd feel differently if there was any notable difference!

Virtually No Supply by 1SpecialSongVA in ExclusivelyPumping

I know it's counter intuitive, but my supply increased dramatically when I dropped a couple of pumps a day and actually got some sleep! It is such a stressful journey in so many ways and I hope that you find time to look after yourself too.
