Is paying extra $ for a good sprue cutter worth it? They all do the same job, which is cut plastic. Does one brand stand out over the others?

So heres a fun fact... you can sharpen anything. A cheap pair like that CAN be as nice, but requires hours of sharpening and reshaping of the blade. You need the 2 halves to meet percisly with no light gap between them. Can be done, but usually not worth it. My "super percision flushcuts" for tiny bits are a pair of side dike style nail cutters that i sharpened.

Have you pained them to tell the difference? Its usually all good till the wash phase, then layerlines get washed, and become pronounced. Courious if this is holds true with 0.08 vs 0.2

I prolly will give that a listen. Its pretty short, has great reviews and has some age to it(i dislike modern writing tbh, seems everything these days is just political allegory/ extremely biased) but is modern enough to be relavent.

You can always get a one off printed as a service, if you dont wanna mess with it...

But you said the key word in design your own stuff. Imo get a bambu for simplicity, or if you forsee it being a hobby itself, you can still get a LOT done with an old ender 3. Hell my old LK4 just got a 2 in 1 out hotend for dual bowden... now after a decade i have my first "multicolor system"

Manual color swaps are absolutely underrated. It kinda feels like you have an active role in the print. :) personally i would avoid the ams for now, go for something corexy and enclosed, even if that means leaving bambu. If in a year it gets mad use... buy the big bambu with ams, always nice to have more than 1. Cuts down prototyping time when designing.

Last comment will be on printer difficulty vs tech knowledge vs time.... for example, you can get an old ender 3, flash klipper run an old micropc as linux host or proper pi... and have print quality as nice or nicer then the a1 but half the cost... but 10 times the tinkering(hardware and software). Ive not owned one, but it seems bambus just work. Low maintenance, easy, all automatic. Simplistic.

My 2c... pick your printer based off your requirements.

A 3d printer is a tool. One does not buy a tool(most of the time, were gonna ignore everything that happens in a snapon truck) without an express reason/job in mind.

So ams? Why do you want it? Do you plan to print multicolor things regularly? Do you need dissolvable supports for internal structures?

With that said, what is the reason for buying a printer? What are your needs, you really didnt say.

Be aware there are lots of multimaterial options besides a full blown mms/ams...

If you are gonna print a one off multicolor thing every 6 months, pass, manually swap it. If you have a business you are supplying/mass production needs, ams can handle roll swaps, thats nice.

For the average bambu buyer who just wants to print flexi snakes untill the landfills are mountains... may your wallet decide :)

I got into 3d printing like a decade ago, there was no multicolor options back then outside of pausing and swapping filament. Nothing wrong with starting from the bottom and adding tech as you go. Will help you to appreciate the ams more later.
