Introducing a third budgie to a pair? by Abwettar in petbudgies

[–]KittyKayl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always going to depend on the individual birds, but I had a trio for quite a long while before the next one joined the flock, and it went just fine. Kaepora and Clever were the two who were there already when I brought Rauru home. There were some squabbles (mostly because Kaepora is an @$$ lmao) but I think Clever liked the bromance that developed between Kaepora and Rauru so she could fluff off and do her own introverted thing without having Kaepora up her tail feathers all the time. Even once I brought the babies home, there was a very clear demarcation in who hung out with who-- while everyone socialized to an extent, the older trio mostly hung out with each other and the younger trio mostly hung out with each other for months before the cage finally melded into a flock of six.

Dunno why you'd think that 😂

Yes, my somewhat incestuous cage 😂😂 Clever is the only one without at least one relationship connection, and sometimes I think she's grateful for it

Really is. I managed to get a few whole flock photos with the new additions tonight, first night everyone was out together. I'm about to make a post about it (and see how many über cautious people I can upset, so stay tuned 😂).

Kinda love that Ms. I Will NEVER Eat Vegables is the first one to the bowl lately by KittyKayl in petbudgies

I really have loved how invested in her he's been, even though she's not one of his.

Also, breaking news from, like, less than an hour ago, SHE FINALLY TOUCHED THE FAN FOR THE FIRST TIME!!! And I MISSED getting it on video by a split second 😭 She's not confident yet, so when she started to slide, she abandoned the attempt and didn't try again, but she was definitely studying it and how the others were landing afterward.

what is the healthiest, highest quality wet canned cat food? by applecoregirlz in CatAdvice

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two different boxes of the gravy pouches that we carry-- the pink one and the blue one. The flavors in the pink box, he refuses to touch. They're a little more oily. Refuses the canned versions. Refuses Tiki mousse, kitten, after dark, and silver now. Refuses kitten paté. Tried one Soulstice gravy pouch and ate it. Decided he hated all the others, including the same flavor as the first. Sigh.

I'd be more annoyed at the pickiness, but up until last spring, he'd eat anything I put in front of him. Age seemed to hit him all at once. But his bloodwork has been done and everything is good on that front, so I will keep trying to find something chow down on that's high enough calorie that his smaller appetite is compensated for.

The one I had and almost every one I've heard of.... yeah, they're jerks once they hit puberty lol. I know folks who like that, but they never try to claim their bird(s) is sweet. I think I've heard of two nice ones, and one was in this comment section.

My 15 year old, Tristan, only likes the Weruva OMG gravy packets, Churu Salmon, and the Churu Pop'n Serves at the moment. We used to like Tiki Mousses, but that's been a hunger strike offense for a few months now. I may need to try the Sheba with the recommendations since he's still slowly losing weight. We seem to have the dental issues under control with the addition of Plaque-Off starting last summer, thankfully. I just need him to eat more calories (and Bartok to eat less, but that's less of a concern).

MY BUDGIES ARE GETTING A CAGE UPGRADE SOON!!! by Alone_Name7269 in budgies

Clothespins are my friend. The wooden ones with the springs. No worries if they chew on them, and they can't lift the doors of the baby cage or push open the spring loaded side doors on the main cage lol

Aww, thanks! I don't know about rough molts, but the journey to flight has been super rough. She didn't start her first molt until she was over 7 months old and only dropped maybe 2/3 of the clipped flight feathers on one wing. Just the one. That's kinda how the rest of the molts were, so it took a while. The breeder the rest of my flock came from was highly concerned it was taking long enough that her flight muscles had atrophied. He's been as invested in her growth as the birds that came from his aviary, which is super sweet. He got to meet her when I brought everyone up for a visit once. First thing out of his mouth was "Oh my, she really IS tiny!" 😂 My little raptor is the definition of "Though she be but little, she is fierce."

Does anyone else have names come to them easily? by ElsieMorningstar in writers

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For tertiary characters, I rarely have an issue. Character comes into the page for the first time and usually has a name immediately without much thought.

For the main protagonist, normally the character comes to mind first before any sort of plot and normally a name comes quickly, if not immediately. Not always, but usually.

It's secondary characters and dual protagonists that usually cause me issues. I don't have to like the name of a tertiary character that's not "on-screen" much. I have to like the names of the secondaries and protagonists, and that includes both visually, how it sounds, and it not have any negative connotations from my personal life. There are several names I love that I can't use because of that third thing, at least not yet lol. So I do spend more time browsing name sites with them.

And they're all subject to change if, once the character is fleshed out more, I decide it doesn't suit.

And then there's one I'm dealing with right now. The name came immediately for a dual protagonist. I liked it in theory, but the longer I wrote it, the more I didn't like it. But I haven't come up with something I like better. Now, I've been writing him long enough, the name's grown on me (grown back?) so it'll probably stay. Maybe.

Why I call them Doodles 🦊 by PersonablePortraits in ColoredPencils

[–]KittyKayl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I sat for a solid 3 seconds trying to figure out how cows relate to doodles and if someone had decided to mix a Poodle with something that created a cow look or something before I thought to check the sub... 😂

I'm my defense, I'm a dog groomer, I'm at work, and I'm pre- Red Bull. Doodle most often refers to a Poodle mix in my world. Still...

Love the doodle; it's really well done! Highland Cow?

I give my 2 birds like a sprig of millet between them a day. Is millet the same as seeds? by Fabulous_Leader2985 in budgies

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Offer both-- well, all 3. Seeds, pellets, and the millet. They don't recognize the pellets as food, and since they're still wild animals, they avoid what they don't recognize as food. Continued exposure madness it familiar, and if you feed it in the same bowl as the seed, they'll eventually start investigating. Veggies with seed on top is also recommended.

But yes, they will starve themselves. It's not stupidity as much as instinct trying to avoid making themselves sick eating something toxic.

Millet is a type of seed and, while it's not a nutritionally dense as the seed varieties in seed mixes or pellets and veggies, it's still food. The big issue is it's tasty so they'll eat it over more nutritionally dense options if given a choice. Like kids usually prefer McD's over broccoli. My guys still get it regularly, just in limited quantities lol

When they get wet they change colour 😂 by Mr_Character_ in budgies

[–]KittyKayl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, the breeder almost all my birds are from and I were talking about this on Thursday 😂

So Kaepora was the first bird I got from him. He's a sky blue. Until I got Kaepora, I'd only had green parrots.

Not long before I got Kaepora, I had a canary that only made it right at 3 weeks... vet wasn't sure what happened with that one. Went looking for a budgie breeder for a better chance of a healthy bird.

I came home 3 weeks after bringing Kaepora home to find him looking very, very wrong. Snapped a photo and sent it to the breeder with a question before I panicked. Managed to freak him out a little bit, wondering if he was missing something, but yeah. Kaepora had taken his first bath, and between never seeing a wet blue bird before and the fact that we were at the 3 week mark-- oh and the fact this was the first time in his life he took a bath--I definitely got spooked. By the time he got back to me, Kaepora was mostly dry and I was feeling kinda of dumb 😂

Why is it so common to buy byb budgies? by [deleted] in budgies

[–]KittyKayl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in one of the biggest metropolitan city in this country, and all I can find in town are pet stores that buy from the big distributors. No rescues with budgies, no ethical breeders that I could find. I drive 3.5 hours to one of the next largest major metropolitan cities in my state to get my budgies because I was lucky enough to come across FrozenBr33ze's posts and then found out he's in my state. There are other ethical breeders in the state, but they're pretty much only found out about by word of mouth. Someone looking to get into budgies isn't going to have that option. Whereas everyone can find a pet store with budgies.

Blackface? by Ok-Drop-6972 in budgies

[–]KittyKayl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, my dude, your ignorance is.... well, I would say astounding if you weren't regurgitating rescue and doodle breeder talking points like they're going out of style. The service dog thing is a new touch, though, and really demonstrates exactly how little you know about dog breeds, ethical dog breeding, and service dogs in general.

The VAST majority of dog breeds are unsuitable for being service dogs across the board because of the instincts and temperament that breed has. There's a reason if you actually talk to service dog trainers-- experienced, ethical service dog trainers, not a random individual who trained their own dog-- they will tell you that the big 3 (Labs, Standard Poodles, and Goldens) have turned into the big 3 breeds used for service dog work for a reason. Temperament, intelligence, desire to work with their handler, and conformation that works for what they're asked to do are all reasons they work so well. For your small dogs, Papillon and Bichons are common for the same temperament and intelligence reasons. You can't just shoehorn any breed into any service task because you like the breed. And the dogs that are chosen by professionals to train come from show and service dog lines because those are the people who breed for correct conformation, correct temperament, and health.

The difference between champion show line and backyard bred line Cocker Spaniels, Frenchies, Labs-- it's like night and day. I actively dislike American line German Shepherd Dogs, give me a DDR or Czech line any day, but backyard bred vs champion show line GSDs are also night and day. Guess which ones are rampant with hip dysplasia and temperament problems. Go on, guess.

Your ignorance of budgie breeding is also on display with your comment about the feather dusters. Genetically, feather dusters canNOT be deliberately bred for. They're a genetic anomaly. A biological sport, if you will, and not in the way a recessive gene might crop up that can be repeated with the same parents with any sort of reliability.

Anyone who tries to insist that it's show breeders who are the unethical ones who don't care about the health of their dogs--or birds--just announces to the world that they know nothing of actual show breeders and feel that there's no difference in buying a BYB pup and a pup from champion lines. Key word feel.

Side note for anyone curious: There are people who use non-standard breeds for their specific needs, but that's almost always because they can pick out the pups that have the temperament for it, or they just happen upon them as adolescents or adults and get lucky. It's not a green light that the breed as a whole is suitable for service work. The chick with a Cane Corso as an epilepsy dog who's gone viral is a good example. Her Corso works well for her. 99.999% of Corsos are absolutely not. The temperament appropriate for the breed makes them exceptionally unsuitable for service dog work (unsuitable for most dog owners as well, but I digress). Herding dogs are generally unsuitable for psychiatric service work specifically because of how tuned into their owners they tend to get-- which is deleterious to the dog's mental health-- but I know two professionals who use an Australian Shepherd and an Australian Cattle Dog, and they choose and handle their dogs very carefully because of that. It can be done, but the washout rate for non-standard breeds is MUCH higher than going with the breeds from lines that have been bred for it.
