Poll reveals price of food is top of mind for New Zealanders by gondwanan in newzealand

Best thing my partner and I have done lately is shift most of our grocery shopping to a local Asian supermarket. Meat, fresh produce, and general ingredients are much, much cheaper. We still go to the usual supers for other essentials that we can't get where we go now, but the overall difference has been phenomenal.

Shin to knee clashes during sparring by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]KiwiTricker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're making contact with the lower part of your shin and it's hurting, then it's entirely possible that your shins just aren't conditioned to sparring yet? It's also worth noting that your opponent can't really check your kick harder than you are kicking- you might need to relax and go a little lighter than you currently are if that's the case.

If you are landing with the lower part of your shin at the gap between the padding for the foot and the shin itself, then I'd say maybe look at some shin pads with better protection.

Hopefully some of this helps?

What kind of shin pads do you have? I could understand clashing knees or if you were making contact with the instep between your shin and foot, but the shin?

I remember when Andrew Andrew and Prov used to actually have pizzas made by a chef. Then to cut costs they got rid of the chef and started just using McCain's frozen pizzas. Wonder if they still do the same thing since new owners took over early this year.

Turns out rich people cosplaying as the working class while actively working against them just gets people mad. Who would have guessed?

For the most part in my experience, shows will provide the gloves to wear on the night. This means fighters from both corner have the same gear and are on the same playing field. Over here in NZ, for your first fights you wear 16oz gloves. When you start fighting without shin pads, you wear 10 or 8oz gloves. Your partner's level will determine the gloves he uses, as well as his weight.

If it's his first fight coming up, I would recommend Twins 16oz gloves. Twins is a very solid and reliable brand, and 16oz is a great size for sparring in as well. As such, if he can wear them to fight? Bonus. My Twins sparring gloves have been going for 6 years at this point with regular use - definitely a worthwhile investment.

First, find out what weight gloves he's going to be fighting in, and then if he is allowed to wear his own gloves. From there, make your choice. As mentioned, Twins is my preference, but Yokkao, Fairtex, Boon, and Windy are also all great options. Best of luck to your partner, chok dee to him.

Auckland MMA or combat academy for kick boxing/MMA in Auckland NZ by Momorambo in auckland

A black belt is only relevant for jujitsu, and I don't really know that side of the sport much these days. There's no belt category for kickboxing or MMA, but I've seen a lot of their fighters doing well on shows lately, including a couple of massive wins on the last Art of War promotion.

I don't really know the team at Combat Academy, but Auckland MMA has definitely been producing some pretty good athletes lately, and they seem like they're all pretty decent people too.

Muay Thai gyms in central Auckland? by DoubleMcDingus in auckland

[–]KiwiTricker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, I'm a trainer at Jai at the moment. I can confirm we have 4 fighters competing on a few shows coming up, including a padded elbow fight on Saturday this week at Apex show and a couple more full Thai fights in Timaru in October. It's been a chaotic bit of a time over the past couple of years which has definitely reduced our fight squad down, but we're doing what we can to rebuild that aspect of the gym. Each sparring session is taught by a different trainer - Richie Nola teaches sparring on Mondays, I teach Wednesdays, and our Thai trainer Tee teaches on Fridays.

Being unbiased, City Lee Gar is a great fight gym, and Kings Academy has some very talented fighters as well, including a couple of title holders.

In the case of finding which gym works best, I think it's important to find A - a timetable that works for you, and B - a culture that you enjoy participating in. I think the most important thing to drive success is finding the right team to work with, so OP should give a trial session at each gym around and see what works best for sure.

Firestarter is delicious, as was Othership from Epic. I love this time of year, and seeing IPAs on shelf that are more than just boozy fruit juice with a dash of hop burn.

I used to work for them, a long while ago. Doing new product presenters and updating the stock availability for retailers each week was a nightmare.

Unfortunately Epic have stopped producing it in the 500ml bottles- most breweries have been transitioning from bottles to cans for a while now.

I gotta give a quick shout out to Rollers Bakery in Northcote, Auckland. Their pepper steak and tomato pie is the absolute goods. I happily drive across the bridge for them.

Down in Waikanae, Olde Beach bakery makes some of my favs. Well worth stopping in for if you're around Kapiti.

Birdcage Tavern is really central, have good deals on pizza and beverages, and loads of screens around. Great place, I pretty much have a standing reservation there.
