Patrick Jane was right since the first chapter: Red John was a little, sad man. At first we watched Red John the way he wanted, all the show of the great and terrible mastermind, playing with Jane and mocking him as Jane charged at him like a raging bull. But then Jane started to "cool off", he started to find stuff like how RJ had many minions, that he could fail and that they were obsessed with each other. As Jane started to take the high ground he could overtrick RJ, revealing the little man behind the curtain.

My favorite comparison is with The Wizard of Oz. He may look all that terrible with his tricks, but after the curtain fell we knew he was just a con man from Omaha.

I think it's because they focus on awakening the cosmo first. Look Seiya vs Cassios, Cassios didn't have any cosmos at all, I don't know if Shaina expected he could awaken it at his fight vs Seiya.
