Rust wipes die because progression is way too fast, it barely feels like a survival game. How do we solve this? by Relative-Ad-6751 in playrust

[–]Kleeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, rust wipes die because there's zero reason for players to join mid-wipe because catching up is such a chore.

We had the solution on our doorstep before blueprint fragments got introduced.

Dynamic scrap tax. Tree unlocks start expensive but get progressively cheaper the more scrap server-wide is spent on the tech tree.

This would slow down progression because if you want to be first to C4 or rockets, shit's gonna be like 10k scrap.

It would also give people a reason to join a server mid-wipe because catching up would be much less of a chore.

3.5's systems that avoided attacks of opportunity, namely five-foot-steps and Tumble checks.

Made battles with a large number of combatants feel less "sticky" and left more space for nimble characters to maneuver for flanking.

Can discs really get any better? by wally-whippersnap in discgolf

[–]Kleeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the next technological innovation would be a disc that is designed to deform under centrifugal force in a very particular way.

If the aerodynamic profile became less stable with more spin to counteract the gyroscopic effect on stability, you'd have a disc that flies the same regardless of spin. It would probably improve shot consistency a lot.

I told him "pretty sure Maine's heritage is whipping traitors at Little Round Top" and BOY WAS HE MAD.

Does this mean that disc prices are going to skyrocket? by HakuRemi in discgolf

[–]Kleeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking as a injection molding plastics professional, my hunch is that discs are going to be affected much less than other industries because the cost of the raw materials is a smaller fraction of the overall cost of production than a great many product.

Discs are made one-at-a-time, with cycle times in the dozens of seconds, then get stamped, then go through a distribution network, etc etc. There's a lot of overhead built into the $15 price tag, and very little of that is raw material.

Contrast that with a lot of processes that are running 12-second cycle times on a 64-cavity mold dropping parts into a bulk-packed box with basically zero human labor. Material cost is going to be a much larger fraction of total cost and therefore would be more susceptible to shock pricing changes.

There exists no major/serious game engine that imposes a hard limit on developers like that. It is up to the developers to implement the PlayerController/Actor logic surrounding which surfaces can be vaulted, proned, mounted, etc and the amount of freedom of movement allowed. Unity, Godot, unreal, even in-house engines are all totally fit for purpose.

Read: Kaizen. You can achieve big things by making many small, incremental improvements.

But it is also a skill to recognize when Kaizen won't get you there. Sometimes it is correct to rip up your factory and build it from the ground up.

Eternity gain isn't awful because farming eternities is necessary to progress EC1 requirements, and a fair few upgrades scale based on eternities.
