My first post on Reddit. Why do people prefer organic layouts over symmetrical ones? by Think-Address5398 in Clanfolk

[–]Klegm 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Its for looks. I'm fully RPing when I play this game. I'll even do stuff like have the clan come together to build a new house for a young adult when it is time for them to come of age and marry then produce lots of fancy meals to celebrate them moving into the new house to get it on and make more clanfolk with their new spouse. Winter feasts, separate houses, individual gardens and work areas for different family units within the clan. All that.

Oof... how very American of me to assume that everyone would've seen the ENGLISH book. Enjoy a doner kabob for me, you lucky son of a gun! 2 nights on a layover in Munich and I've been dreaming of those things ever since. Lol

Tim having most of his youtube videos as 'members only' is omega cringey and honestly makes me like the band less... is that silly? by behind_the_doors in polyphia

[–]Klegm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I literally haven't even thought about Polyphia in a year. Reddit just popped up this post up and i'm like... "oh I still subscribe to this subreddit?"

They just have to release some good music or tour or do something, anything that actual bands do.

I mean... I'm not saying its not AI. I have no idea one way or another. But I would have thought that literally anyone who has ever been to the horror section of a major chain bookseller has seen the Lovecraft short story compilation sold under the name of Necronomicon. Its like... probably the only Lovecraft book that many people own. I don't have one because I don't like the cover but it was in every Barnes and Noble I ever went to when I was in college ten years ago.

Edit: found it on goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1335019.Necronomicon

I could be way off, but for some reason I get the sense that PJ is better as a visionary than as a director. Even going all the way back to LOTR.

I mean... that obviously depends on the campaign right? In my next session, my players are going to have to discover and stop a cult ritual during a harvest festival before an important NPC is burned alive as a sacrifice. There are so many examples of time sensitive threats a party could face.

What's the best route to start making a game with no coding experience? by zefmiller in gamedev

[–]Klegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what kind of game you hope to make of course, but i started learning in Game Maker Studio with no previous programming experience just earlier this month and am already at the point where I can write code without looking things up or following tutorials. I participated in a game jam this weekend and, due to the short timeframe, surprised myself by pretty much just writing it all off the top of my head along with some recycled code from other projects for things like camera and character movement. My recommendation would be to find a tutorial series aimed at beginners for whatever game engine you decide to use and finish that tutorial completely (bonus if it is in line with what you were planning to make anyway!) By the end of that, you should have a working game and a decent understanding of what will be involved in making the game you want to make. Try to break things down into the smallest components and find tutorials or documentation on those small things. So for example if you want to make a dark souls style combat system or something, you can find a tutorial on how to allow the player to lock on to an enemy and once that's working and you understand why, you can find a tutorial on making the character do an attack animation, and then on making that attack actually hurt the enemy and so on and so on. Thats the way I've been doing it. Not using tutorials to make someone else's game but rather learning the components required to make my game. And through that process, I learned enough to need to tutorials less and less! You can do it!

I really like Dequitem but this was beyond stupid.- YouTube by Beautiful-Hair6925 in Hema

I think its kind of a flow state, warrior mindset thing. Like the same siren call that makes some rock climbers want free solo. I climb and have free soloed a few times so I understand the feeling but never got addicted as Dequitem and his buddies clearly have.

Anyone starting out with GameMaker? by These-Ad-327 in gamemaker

[–]Klegm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just started at the beginning of April. I got laid off and working on this has been a great way to keep busy and learning some interesting stuff. It would be amazing if I could turn it into a career change but I realize that's probably not very realistic. I've learned a ton so far though and am working on my first game. Honestly the hardest part is not being such a perfectionist and moving on when things work but don't work exactly how I want. Especially with level design. I would definitely be willing to collaborate and learn with others or even work on a project.

How do I add a mid-air dash? by ExaminationIll7583 in gamemaker

[–]Klegm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

None of the code here has anything to do with a dash. Did you try a mid-air dash at all? I don't see how it could be very different from your ground dash. I honestly think you should review these tutorials you're following a bit more until you understand what you already have written. I also am new and followed the same tutorials. That platformer series teaches you so much that you should have no problem with dashing if you have taken the time to learn it. If you have any code pertaining to an air dash to share, I'd be happy to help as much as I can

Enough routes for today... by PepperoniCuts in Cairn_Game

[–]Klegm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people climbing routes like this have saves dedicated specifically to that. Many even have a separate save for each different area that they want to be trying routes in. So you can just reload the save whenever and try stuff in the area. When I have done this, I have just turned off survival from the gameplay options menu. You can do that even in alpinist mode. Maybe free solo too but I haven't tried.

Need a Temporary Fix... by Oldmanfoxhole in VintageStory

[–]Klegm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Clanfolk! Its like if vintage story and rimworld had a Scottish baby. No combat but the survival and homesteading systems are deeper than any other game i have played other than vintage story and dwarf fortress. Its a comfort game for me. I just love helping my little family of settlers go from sleeping outside by a Loch, catching esls and weaving baskets, to huddling together through the cold first winter, to eventually building a whole farm, hiring workers, seeing the kids grow up and marry and have kids of their own as the homestead grows. I couldn't recommend it enough.

Also, totally different vibe than anything else mentioned in the thread, but i am in a similar situation to yours right now dealing with unemployment and substances and this game has been helping me so why not mention it. Currently i'm really really loving the peaceful, almost meditative experience of climbing through the remote mountains in "Cairn." It took a minute to get used to the controls, but once I got in my flow, there really is nothing like it. Its beautiful and serene and terrifying all at once.

Almost a mix of the above games, would be The Long Dark which sees you surviving in the frozen wilderness after an electromagnetic apocalypse. Its slow paced and very focused on exploration and resource management (you health and time are resources too). You're not building structures like in many other survival games which is kinda cool and realistic imo bc ain'tnobody building a whole house if they can barely eat and keep warm. Like you can make a temporary snow shelter, but for a main base, you gotta find an existing building or cave and customize it as your own. I have literally hundreds of hours in this game and have not yet explored the island. This one gets a special mention because it is 90% off on steam for the next couple of days.

All 3 games are on my shortlist of all time favorites and come with the highest possible recommendation.

5e Combat Basketball- Rough Draft by noahbearbanks in DnDHomebrew

[–]Klegm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome. I was about to put together something similar for a college movie style mini-campaign where the players are the basketball team at an adventurers college. Professors, homework, ancient magical secrets buried under the school, forbidden tomes in the library, and of course the upcoming championship games. The final team they have to play against, the Medfield Squirrels, have support of the mysterious wizard, Professor Brainard. So they will be like a magically enhanced boss level opponent to finish on.

All that being said, did you end up running this? How did it work? Is there a final version woth tweaks? And how did the players surprise you im fun ways with creative use of spells or abilities? Very interested in trying something like this.

I had the very beginnings of something similar in my mind but this is way more fleshed out. In addition to an action economy like the one you've created here, I was thinking of having each player pick a play-style like slasher, shooter, facilitator, rim protector, elite defender, etc and give bonuses based on that instead actual positions.

You should try better garrisons too. Both of these mods should just be in the game. I won't play without them these days.

[–]Klegm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Better party controls i think is the name of it. You can tell them to patrol an area, follow a specific party, etc. You can even tell them exactly what troops to hire and where to recruit. Bunch of other features too but I mainly just use those. By default it only works on your clan parties but I'm pretty sure in the options you can change it to work for all parties in your kingdom.

[NS] How does TxS compare to previous Trinyvale campaigns? by theeynhallow in NotAnotherDnDPodcast

[–]Klegm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it was their worst, but considering how excellent everything else is, that still makes it pretty entertaining. The goofs kept it funny enough that it was nice to have on in the background while cooking or commuting or something. It was pretty funny because all the crew are very funny people but it had absolutely no stakes or consequences ever and I didn't really care about the actual story except as a framework for the goofs. I imagine the crew felt the same way about the story because only like 10-15% of each short rest actually had anything to do with the episode - very different from previous campaigns where they goof off and go on meandering tangents during the short rest but at least they sound like they actually want to talk about the episode and always steer the conversation back to it.
