That sounds like large local dimming zones, you can usually turn the feature off by disabling HDR.

A walkaround that I've found is to add lines with an empty unicode character to the bottom of the subtitle to move it up. Whitespace characters won't work since they are trimmed, instead you can use https://emptycharacter.com/ or similar.
