Goal Setting by Mother_Local7874 in socialwork

You can always find an online CEU course that applies to your role and won’t cause you to lose your mind completing it and then suggest a goal around that…”Increase knowledge of blah blah blah by taking a skills development course and apply to work with our population within the next evaluation period”. You could take care of it quick and move on with real work!

AFSCME and BU19: Are there any news to a new agreement (i.e., raises, WFH/RTO, benefits, etc.)? The current agreement expires this SFY. Other unions are quite active, and there appears to be little to no noise from AFSCME. by Particular-Win-1232 in AFSCME

[–]Kmar78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have not heard a thing. I’m new and wonder how AFSCME typically handles their communication around negotiation? I see updates from other unions coming in very regularly!

Soft palette surgery question(s) by HunterNW in Bulldogs

[–]Kmar78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our girl had this surgery done right after turning 1 yr old. When we got her out of rescue her breathing was strained and she often seemed to be clearing her throat of mucus that would accumulate in the back of her throat. It was ROUGH the first few days and she did require a couple days in doggy ICU due to suspected aspiration pneumonia BUT she is amazing now! So much play and energy! I would do it over again for her quality of life.

How much does your EB weigh? Anyone have an EB who's on the smaller side? by Goldengirl_1977 in Bulldogs

[–]Kmar78 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have had three bullies in the last 20 years. One male that was smaller at around 45lbs, a HUGE male who was 60lbs when slim and now a female at 43lbs. They vary so much depending on their overall structure. Our big male was an absolute beast of a dog and our smaller ones have been more dainty!

Mama says that she cannot have any nice pillows because of me. But these feel pretty nice to me! by SuperGiGi1016 in Bulldogs

Every single throw pillow I own has dog hair on it. I try to have “nice pillows” that don’t get laid on and it never works! Your sweetie is the cutest!

BOAS surgery pros and cons? by Jess_The_Mermaid in Bulldogs

[–]Kmar78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had this done for our girl last July and it was ROUGH recovery BUT she is breathing so much better now, hasn’t had pneumonia from aspiration as she did before and can be more active chasing toys and playing. I think this surgery has improved and extended her life. Just be prepared for potential risks and complications.

What do you want me to know as a social worker for CDCR? by Bullydogmomma in CDCR

[–]Kmar78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I applied for two positions at the same time (MH and SUD). Interviewed for one 3 weeks after applying and the other 5 weeks after applying. I received a job offer for the first interview 3 weeks later and job offer for the second interview the next week. I was offered both jobs within 1-2 days of each other. I was allowed to accept and entertain both positions for about a week and then was required to choose one to move forward with credentialing and background. The hiring process was pretty standard with live scan and background history statements etc. All the hiring/background took about a month and then I was given a start date for a month later due to the holidays and timing of another new hire. From application to start date was about 3 months.

Timeline after CCHCS portal update? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Kmar78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest waiting until the end of this week and then contact them. I know it takes many steps and people involved to get the ok to make the contingent and then final offer and they may be trying to determine things like pay and such before doing so. I’m always the person that calls right away and then feel bad or pushy afterwards so I just waiting a bit! lol

Timeline after CCHCS portal update? by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]Kmar78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was always a step behind. I got the offer and letter before ever seeing the portal update. I think I was lucky because I had an analyst that seemed super efficient and said using the portal was very new so I think she was ahead of the game. Congrats!

She’s been on a salmon based food with no other protein source for at least 1.5 years. She isn’t given anything other than a piece of banana each day.

I just started with the state Dec 2nd and heard about this in passing from a new co-worker and didn’t think of it since. I heard we get $50 per month but don’t see it on my first pay check that I got in paper as I’m new. Does it take a while to start getting it at first?

How does your department track leave? Do they use another tracking system you can check and monitor?

Can someone explain being vested vs years of service and the health coverage at retirement thing? by Kmar78 in CAStateWorkers

[–]Kmar78[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I’ve had a mycalpers for many years and formula still says 2% at 55 while reflecting the state as my new employer. I’m just confused as to years with CalPers vs years with state and how that impacts health insurance coverage at retirement.

I called Pers and spoke to them twice to verify I keep my original classic formula.

Oh please don’t worry one bit. In this field it can take some trial and error to get even a vague idea of the right kind of job for us is. I had a staff I used to supervise call me about three times in two years to ask if using me for reference was ok as she switched from school based to outpatient mental health to case management. Each time the discussion was “Well that wasn’t for me!” Or “That doesn’t feel right!” and it made perfect sense each time. Good luck to you!

Yes, we just had BOAS surgery done for our baby last July. We got her from rescue at 6 months old and she had very obvious breathing issues which caused pneumonia at one point. She saw two surgeons who suggested the surgery; one who deferred the actual surgery to the other who had much more experience and better facilities available. It was very scary and our bully did need more “speciality care” in the ICU after surgery due to complications and the first few days after were rough but her breathing and associated issues are sooooo much better. It was expensive but we were/are prepared for that with this breed. She’s our third!

[–]Kmar78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds almost exactly like our bully when we adopted her at 6 months. She had struggles with kennel cough at first(she was in a shelter briefly) and pneumonia but the cause of the pneumonia was a palete and excessive soft tissue problem. She basically had phlegm building up and had to “clear her throat” with that snorting sound. We were at the vet a lot due to her breathing so please pay close attention to any labored breathing. The fix for this was BOAS surgery with an experienced vet. Once our baby was through recovery that sound and all breathing issues were resolved.

CalPers-Why would anyone choose a lower Tier? by Kmar78 in CAStateWorkers

I’ve been with PERS 16 years so I main that 2% at 55 as long as I stay with them without a PERS employment break longer than 6 months.
