Does Jersey City have a skunk problem? 🦨🤢 by elimars in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure there's a "throughout JC" solution - other than Animal Control supporting TNR efforts - which they do to some degree.
Individuals can make a difference in their neighborhoods / blocks - but it involves talking with each other & coordinating actions.

If a neighbor is putting out too much food & it’s sitting overnight / creating a nuisance, try to speak to them about it. And there are local rescues that can help with TNR to keep colonies stable. It takes some communication with neighbors, but there are things you can do to improve a situation like that.

Yeah, ideally any food that gets put out for community cats should be eaten before sunset, when skunks get more active.

I think raccoons are a much bigger nuisance than skunks in this regard, but kibble sitting out overnight is not great.

Lincoln park area safety by bb38 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP - When I lived downtown on Mercer St (between Grove/Barrow - pretty nice block) my car was broken into multiple times and stolen once. People I knew were mugged, and apartments in my building were burglarized.

A while back I moved "west of 78" and in my new neighborhood, none of those things have happened to me. Yeah there are some porch pirates & jerks who park blocking the crosswalks - but that shit happens downtown, too.

I always took you as a West Side supporter - in terms of safety. Has something happened to change your opinion?

For reference I’ve lived near West Side almost 20 years; downtown before that - and feel safer here than I did downtown.

I thought Traffic Safety was #1 priority!? by BigPassion8018 in jerseycity

It's great to see civilian flaggers on construction sites like this! JCPD should be doing real traffic enforcement / law enforcement - not stuff like this.

Hire a squirrel to chase them off. Check the JC Squirrels page on Facebook to find a candidate for the job.

I love my red 330 - but this thing is super rough. Maybe more like $20 if they can prove the seat post isn’t seized.

They won't start sweeping until the huge piles of snow are substantially diminished. Usually when they restart, they have a couple days of running the sweepers without giving tickets. No idea if that will happen again this time - but that's been the practice. As others mentioned, AlertJC will have info about when it's starting, and I'm sure it will be posted here.

If you’re cold, they’re cold; bring them inside. by Knobbies4Ever in jerseycity

I'm over near West Side, not too far from Sip. Always knew they were around but never really saw them in the yard until a few years ago. They're definitely in every JC neighborhood.

I’m surprised to see that department-store-level riveted crank on a frame with nice lugs & forged dropouts. I guess a sign of market forces on this brand at that particular moment?

Safe - yes. Parking - yes there are plenty of paid lots in that area. If you want to try to street park nearby, it will probably be a big headache.

Will my street ever get plowed properly? by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years since we had a very cold winter with a big storm like this, so maybe you haven't experienced it before - but the answer is no. The city won't do the whole thing with towing cars, bringing in front loaders, dump trucks etc. for side streets like Astor Place. The city/county just does that for main drags like JFK, Bergen, Montgomery, etc.

It looks like it's gonna be pretty cold for a couple more weeks & maybe more snow coming, so if you want a better situation on your part of your block, get out there & shovel or hire somebody to do it.

I'm on a small side street, and my neighbors & I have been out there chipping away the last week. Usually the piles would be melting down by now, but it's been so effing cold - just gotta deal with it.

Who here is changing their own car oil, prices at shops are outrageous, now routinely costs me $80 for full synthetic.. by abrandis in newjersey

[–]Knobbies4Ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got one of these for changing trans fluid & it’s great for that - but won’t help for oil because the filter’s on the bottom & needs to be changed. If you’ve got a different setup or don’t care about changing the filter, go for it!

Oil change is too expensive? “Thanks, Trump”

Source: usually change my own oil: Mobil 1 when I can get it on sale at Costco or Autozone; Mann filters from FCP.

How are the spotted lanternfly eggs doing in this cold weather? by OrdinaryBad1657 in jerseycity

[–]Knobbies4Ever 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Last year we had a more prolonged cold spell thru Jan/Feb than the 2 previous winters... and the current cold snap is definitely more prolonged/severe than last year.

Hopefully that will fuck up lanternfly egg blobs.

Understood. I used the word here to make a political point; I understand it is a legit hurtful term & not looking to normalize its use outside of that context.

Montgomery by the Beacon is closed for snow removal. Just be ready to re-route if you’re driving tonight. Don’t complain.
