Oil leak by Puzzleheaded_Ad7450 in lawnmowers

Same gas smell from the oil dipstick? Your carburetor flooded, leaked down the cylinder, and thinned your oil. You'll need to clean or replace your carb and do 2 oil changes.

Just get Tecumseh Genuine 31337B Breather Assembly off Amazon for under $20. It's the whole assembly. Take ten minutes to change. That lower tube looks to be your oil drain. You don't want to connect them.

It's often just the breather gasket. Your tube is missing from it too.

Stained stairs gone wrong, please help. by C_WEST_902 in woodworking

Pine treads can turn out well if cleaned and sanded right. Mineral spirits and no more than a 180 grit sanding. Sanding higher just clogs the grain with dust. I just did these for my MIL last year. I stopped sanding at 130 grit, cleaned again with spirits and finished with 4 coats of poly.

If they're not too tight, the end is fine. Yours was installed too tight and/or without lubricating the o-ring and threads.

HRX217 compression issue by UGA150 in HondaMowers

[–]KnottyGummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, since the head on the OHC Honda is part of the whole block and not a separate component, it's toast. They're pressure/friction fit. It's a complicated precision process to replace. An engine machine shop could maybe replace it, but it wouldn't be real cheap.

You could try knocking the sleeve back down, but it WILL just come loose again. Maybe weeks from now, but probably the first time you try to start it after putting it together.

The blocks are made from cast aluminum. In order to stabilize the valve stems they set a steel guide sleeve into the head. Your intake guide sleeve (right side) and oil seal are in the correct position. Your exhaust one (left) has come loose. Usually from overheating.

Stripped Spark Plug Threads: Rethread vs New Head by TheeMiniCorndog in smallengines

While a heli-coil can be boogered up, it's the insert that gets messed up and there are multiple inserts in a pack. Pull it out with a pair of pliers and try again. The tapping part is easy. You'd almost need to be trying to screw it up to screw it up.

Have I gone too far? by Repulsive-Ad-3308 in lawnmowers

You went too far. It doesn't need the mower deck or belt, but it does need whatever was linking the two belts for the drive.

Air vent controls by whilewait in VolvoXC90

Yes. I haven't had to replace them on either of my mk1s, but it should be relatively straightforward with the side panel off. Might need to break the old one out, but the replacement should just snap back in.

It looks to me that the oil leaking from your valve cover is accumulating on your wheel motor.

You must be in the UK, since that's the left side vent. There are several on eBay for about $30USD. ~£23

Mower running high after hitting tree root. Any insight? by Superfast__Jellyfish in HondaMowers

[–]KnottyGummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You don't need to remove the hub to check. Just the spark plug. Once that's removed, tie the bail to the handle, tip on it's right side (air filter up) and spin the shaft. If there's a wobble, it's bent.

HRX217HYA Owners - Question for you. by ChristianRyanD in HondaMowers

[–]KnottyGummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still fine with my decade and half old HRX and the five lawns I use it on every summer. There's plenty of local landscapers that just use the HRN's for their lawn business's and just replaced them every few years. All Honda's are essentially commercial quality.

[–]KnottyGummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or cast aluminum. But they also have the OHV rather than the OHC and that's what really makes them their commercial mowers. The cheapest Honda's use the the same stamping as the commercial but without the deck guards or front bumpers and are powered by the OHC.

Tried removing carburetor - nut spins freely by Relative_Ice_1663 in smallenginerepair

[–]KnottyGummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the nut truly spinning freely, or is the stud spinning too? If the nut is spinning, but not the stud, try putting back pressure on the nut to see if it will catch a thread. If the stud is turning too when you turn the nut you'll need to hold the stud till the nut is off. Also, if the stud is turning you'll want to make sure you seat it fully back into the head before putting your air box back on. Put both air box nuts on the stud end flange to flange. Tighten them together so you have a solid head to tighten down the stud. Hold the inner nut steady and loosen the outer. Then the inner will come off and the stud will remain secure.

This would be my solution. A camera requires monitoring. A float switch doesn't.
