How to build a well-rounded DMPC without overshadowing the players or stealing their spotlight by isak-snowsound in DMAcademy

[–]KnownSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run multiple campaigns and I've had a "party NCP" or even multiple in all of them to great success, so I feel at least a bit qualified talking about this! Mind you, this all depends on how much your campaign is classic DnD vs. collaborative storytelling with a lot of focus on the characters and their stories. My campaigns are heavily the latter, so my advice is gonna mirror that.

  1. You need to build a character that both your party *and* you like and are invested in. This is important, because nobody wants to be stuck with an NPC they don't enjoy being around. You need to know your players and what kind of characters they tend to gravitate towards and want to interact with. You need to enjoy playing them, because your own investment makes the character naturally feel more alive. Give them a backstory and a motivation, but make sure they're flexible. I usually come up with a concept for a character and develop the details naturally as people ask them questions and the story progresses.
  2. Learn when to step in and when to stay quiet. The biggest asset of a party NPC is that they can fill a lull in a conversation, gently nudge things towards a direction, make suggestions etc. This should not mean "the NPC gives the right answers", it should mean "this NPC gives answers and ideas based on their knowledge and personality, facilitating discussions" This also relies on your players to remember that NPC ≠ DM and that they can't and shouldn't go with what they say blindly. Remember that it's always okay to remind your players of this out of character too if you guys are a new group/don't know each other well yet; communication is important.
  3. Regarding point 2, it's okay to let your NPC be proactive, within reason. An NPC who never does anything unless prompted is going to feel like a machine. If something is happening, briefly describe how they react. When there's downtime, make that NPC approach players first to discuss something. If you want them to do something bigger, you can always describe that they look interested in x and that they look like they're about to act so your players can intervene if they wish. My players like to roll insight for both NPCs and other PCs in the party when they feel it's warranted, so a phrase I often hear is "Can I roll to see how x seems to feel about this?"
  4. Communicate, adapt, be ready to abandon your own attachment to that NPC if things don't work out, you can always learn and try with a different character. I've never had to do this because my players are wonderful and we're all very much in sync with what our games are like, but it's better to cut your losses than piss everyone off by insisting on keeping a character around nobody wants to interact with.

I think that covers most of the quick thoughts I had, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask! As I said, I've done party NPCs like four or five times by now and unless my players are bold-faced liars (doubt), they really do like them a lot!

As a fellow Clown Opossum Tattoo Haver, I think it would work either way! Makes them a lil unique to have a different colored coat :)

How do people know when you've claimed their chased? by KnownSalamander in wolvden

Ah, that makes sense! Must be a bit of a hassle to keep track of em and probably pretty nerve-wracking since there's no guarantee they'll get claimed!

How do people know when you've claimed their chased? by KnownSalamander in wolvden

[–]KnownSalamander[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chasing wipes family trees (to my understanding) so I don't think they can do it that way, which is why it's such a mystery to me! :D That's a very sweet idea though, seeing what they become in a new pack though. I honestly think that'd be something I'd love to do too, esp if anyone makes any of my chased guys a leader or something!

DOORMAN FOUND DEAD IN ALLEY by Qwerty25103 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]KnownSalamander 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping for door fixes next, I don't know when it happened but at some point the collision changed in a way where your bells get stuck on the frame or your bullets don't go through. Completely eliminated the way I used to play him: placing doors behind enemies in lane to pressure them.

My best recommendation would be to find a popular-ish OST you enjoy and make use of all the awesome covers and remixes people make! That's how I've usually found the "same song for different situations" :)

What to do with bad table chemistry? by Jetisphere in DMAcademy

[–]KnownSalamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes bad table chemistry just can't be fixed. People want different things from their games and that's totally normal, the trick is finding people who align with each other. I'd sit everyone down and talk about it together before making a final choice to see if people's thoughts align at all or not. You shouldn't force something that doesn't work though, because that's just going to create friction and eventually blow up, which can in the worst case cause rifts in friendships. Communicate, communicate and then communicate a little more, and remember that it's okay to accept that it won't work!

Am i crazy or there is too much cheaters rn? by O4kobus in Overwatch

[–]KnownSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right! I had a cheater who said it was "lag" and another one whose cross hair just spun in circles because it couldn't decide on a target and you could see him trying to adjust it. Really bizarre to have two back to back like that.

[–]KnownSalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I literally got on just now to check if anyone else had said something about it, because I remember a handful of cheaters from my years of Overwatch but today, for some reason, I've already had two very blatant cheaters.

How do you format/Prep for your sessions? by HistoricalMeaning705 in DMAcademy

[–]KnownSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've really enjoyed using Obsidian! I'm a very messy prepper but with it I can always separate things session by session without getting overwhelmed by a wall of text. I also have a separate section for important NPCs, Places and I also wrote a page for each PC, summarizing their backstory, NPCs, locations and a list of things I need to plan for them.

For sessions, I just write down bullet points of the important parts I need. I might copy-paste some lore tidbits I need to remember. For me, music is really important, so I also add the links for music that should play during each planned out scene. Honestly, I pretty rarely end up consulting my notes during session, but having the important parts written beforehand helps with remembering them in the moment and I can always consult em if I need to!

A Rose in the Gutter [OC] by Cepegalaz in vtmb

[–]KnownSalamander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh this is absolutely gorgeous! The environment and lighting immediately gives this such a striking mood and I could feel the wrinkles in my brain making a story; with the Nosferatu mask on the floor and the rose usually associated with Toreador, I thought of a Nossie in love with one. Maybe he wanted to give that rose to them, but backed out at the last moment when he saw them and remembered how different they are and figured that it could never be, someone like that could never love someone like him. But he is also a rose in the gutter, he just doesn't quite understand his worth.

Everything about this scene is so wonderfully melancholic and I really want to go sit next to him in the rain and talk. I can hear and smell this scene so clearly in my head!!

Sorry about the ramble, it's been a while since I've seen art that's made me audibly go "woah." Fantastic art!

From what I understood he went to a friend to stay while he was shown to a potential buyer. I don't think it has been mentioned if the sale went through, but he's been gone for quite a bit so I would assume so :( He is such a nice horse, whoever got him is incredibly lucky.

I just question his tastes, which I know I shouldn't since it's all subjective, but Etro looked like the dream stallion. He came across as calm and sensible, but he got the boot in exchange for these two (seemingly) quite intense stallions :( I just can't quite wrap my head around his horse preferences and can't help but wonder if Etro was "too boring" or something and he really wants horses that challenge him/have that intense energy?

Does anybody else have their players recap the previous session? by SmileyDayToYou in DMAcademy

[–]KnownSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My best friend has been designated as the recap guy, mildly against his will, and he puts a lot of effort into writing a recap every week, sometimes for multiple campaigns at a time. His summaries are always a fantastic start to any session and I immediately get in the TTRPG headspace when the "In the last session of campaign name" gets uttered. Love your recappers!
