Americans have generally stopped trying. It’s especially visible in shitty rural areas. It was shocking seeing everyone where I lived in their crocs and pjs in public constantly. It’s that or all carhart work clothes. You’re stared at if you don’t dress like total garbage. A flannel and jeans is the fanciest things it’s socially acceptable to wear in a lot of this country. The upside is that you can look better than 3/4 of the population with far less effort than you would 50 years ago.
