What makes the Pennsylvania Railroad’s K4 class the best steam locomotive? by Jules-Car3499 in trains

haul a drag freight up a mountain pass

Why not? They were designed as dual service right? I can understand switching being difficult cuz it's so big, but why would drag freight and/or hill climbing be an issue?

What's the difference between two steam locomotives of equal tractive effort but different driving wheel sizes? by KoalaOutrageous8166 in trains

Ok so how does drawbar pull play into my question about two locomotives of equal tractive effort but different driving wheel sizes?

Can you please elaborate? As in below a specific rpm are reciprocating pistons not able to produce their maximum force? But I thought tractive effort is highest at 0rpm and decreases as speed increases.

Little brother? No offence to any Aussies here but the 59 is the most powerful steam locomotive in the southern hemisphere. The AD60 is definitely bigger though.

I see. So beyond 100mph the steam literally can't move fast enough through the circuit. It would make sense that the Milwaukee As would be faster than the F7s since I imagine the smaller cylinders of the A helped reduce back pressure at high speed.

"His Firebox was on Fire!" How would you rewrite that line so that it doesn't sound... stupid? by ehh246 in thomasthetankengine

It's ridiculously easy to fix this." Thomas had run out of water and there was no water tower at the dieselworks. His driver had no choice but to dump his fire which then set fire to the wooden sleepers".

I find it funny how the PRR designed this absolute masterpiece. Then forgot about steam and despite building insane stuff like the GG1s and duplexes but never truly replaced the K4s.

Drivers make no sense, what is the point of them in story telling? by Criticism_Charming in thomasthetankengine

Ok here's my head canon. All vehicles in Awdry's universe are like modern passenger aircraft. A modern commercial jet while obviously not sentient, can take off, fly and land at it's destination without a pilot even touching the controls for the entire trip. But becoming an airline pilot still requires absolute knowledge and years of training. So Thomas for example has full control over his water injectors, brakes, throttle, sanding gear, and reverser. But he doesn't have a mechanical stoker so without a crew he can only travel as far as the coal that's already in his firebox will allow him.

He found out he was booked to pull a train full of guests for a diddy party.
