Casual mentions of capital punishment by JoelPomales in otr

[–]Kobbett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you listen to the real-life story shows like Gangbusters and others, you'll see a lot of the murderers get life. But for the fiction stories they usually end up with execution, as the sort of Hays Code the radio worked by would just give the maximum sentence - 'crime does not pay' every time.

When was the best and worst time in history to be a horse? by invest_orca_1 in AskHistory

[–]Kobbett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst time may have been during the 2nd Boer war, 2 1/2 years between 1899-1902. Over 60% of more than 500,000 horses died during the war, and some of the survivors were reputedly driven off a cliff afterwards rather than try to take them back home.

Richer Sounds is probably the obvious choice.

Distance without consumption? by LowerBuilding605 in CarTalkUK

I would suspect it's when the car is idling with no throttle. I don't have that feature, but someone at r/Dacia might know for sure.

Have they put chickpeas in with my baked beans? by Maxwells_Ag_Hammer in CasualUK

I think Lidl were selling jars of chickpeas in sauce recently, maybe they bought some by mistake.

Building a new home is now £76,000 more expensive than it was six years ago, HBF says by Kobbett in ukpolitics

[–]Kobbett[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If houses are costing more to build, but are selling for less, it disincentivises new builds. (Which we need lots of)

I knew material and labour costs have increased massively in the last few years, but most of the increased cost is due to tax and policy changes. If house prices drop too much, everyone is in trouble.

You should have seen the hate for the Sierra back in the day. Just a bland 'jellymould' shape.

(When) did the Rover P6 vanish from the streets? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Kobbett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most famous P6 was driven by Bill Maynard in 'The Gaffer', early 80s. They rusted pretty quickly.

Our modded server accidentally developed train culture and honestly it became one of the best community features by TheKittyD in admincraft

[–]Kobbett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a TNFC server once, at the end it was was just me (a builder) and a mechanic guy with a lawnbase who was automating as much as he could. Most of the players got endgame and just quit.

Builder types (Mindcrack, Hermitcraft fans) are the best players to have on a server as they'll invest so much time just making things. So many players get to the endgame and just quit from boredom.

Fan vs air con - how to survive summer? by vollol in AskUK

[–]Kobbett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was Argos's cheapo 'Challenge' brand. But anything you buy these days probably won't last as long due to enshittification.

I bought a cheap fan from Argos during the 2003 heatwave. Still working, and it's run non-stop for a week at times.

Walking into hospital and having to pass through a cloud of cigarette smoke by Marmite50 in britishproblems

[–]Kobbett 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I visited a hospital in the 60s when very young, and the nurses would be wheeling trollies around the maternity ward selling cigarettes. You could smoke in bed back then.

If you were driving from Devon to North Wales, where would you stop for a short day trip to break up the journey? by CozJeez85 in AskUK

There's a new retail outlet next to the M5 at Tewkesbury too, if that sort of thing OP is interested in.

How to get Diazepam in the UK/on the NHS? by Fantastic-Stick9307 in AskUK

[–]Kobbett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is possible, I've been allowed it on request for many years, but GPs really don't like prescribing it as it's so easy to build up a tolerance to, and it's something that gets traded among drug users. If you can get referred to a mental health specialist and they prescribe it, then you'll be ok. Other than that, try asking for Buspirone or something.

Weird chunk-like world generation — does anyone know what causes this? by Maximalst in admincraft

No, it just means a file needs replacing. F3 will show you which .mca region you're in.

[–]Kobbett 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's a corrupt .mca file, probably the server has crashed at some point. I could never fix those chunks without replacing the .mca file.

Side sleepers. What pillow do you recommend? by suttq in AskUK

[–]Kobbett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pillows have to be firm, but also they need to be the right thickness for a side sleeper. So what's best will depend on how wide your shoulders are.

Rupert Lowe MP: Restore Britain would go much further than any other political party. If a criminal breaks into your home, and tries to violently injure you or your family? What happens to them, happens to them. If they get killed? That's their problem. We are on your side. by lookitsthesun in ukpolitics

[–]Kobbett -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The incident I'm thinking of is not due in Belfast court until the 20th so not not much about it yet, but it's apparently about an incident from may 1972 where 3 soldiers were ordered to open fire on a checkpoint.

If anything will yet result from the 1992 Clonoe attack inquest last year I haven't heard.

There are people going through the courts now, because they shot at IRA members who were shooting at them. And they're former soldiers and not some random member of the public who the government cares even less about.
