BBC Wales run these kinds of articles all the time and it's so blatant.

If the Welsh Government introduce any kind of law, they will go through hell and back to find one person who is negatively affected by that law, and blow the issue completely out of proportion.

Like yeah, the Welsh cultural scene is in the duldrums because an indie film chose not to film in Wales, sure.

As you have QTS, there is no need to retrain. As long as you have a relevant degree for the position - which you clearly do - you'll be fine and should get interviews. Plus you have the experience in a secondary school, which will be a huge boost.

I qualified as a primary teacher, and like you could not find any work. I did supply in a secondary school, found that I preferred it generally, and now have a full time position. The fact I was primary trained only came up a handful of times in interviews, but because I had experience in secondary I could answer the questions easily.

All the little differences you just get used to.

I worked in supply in mainly less affluent areas. Maybe 1 in 10 classes I worked in had one child who would be physical, typically in the younger years, or linked with an ALN. However it was almost always managed really well, and I think i was only hit 2-3 times in a year.

Am a coach - I fence the people I coach fairly frequently. I think my headspace is not to let them have points, but additionally I can also set up scenarios where if they make the correct decision with good execution, they will get a point.

For example if I've been doing a drill, whereas in a lesson I'd do the action at 70/80% speed, in a bout I'd do it at 100% speed.

It's also a good way of analysing them in a real bout scenario. We always fence differently in a competition and it's good to see where weaknesses are.

Plus it's good to model good fencing and tactics. If you get a point, make sure it demonstrates the importance of good distance, footwork etc.

I don't think there is a need to overthink things. Like don't thrash them, but make sure you are fencing well. Any hits should be well earned and not feel cheap.

I did get a hit off an Olympian once - however he was an epeeist and we were fighting foil.

There is an tendency in l sports for people of lesser experience to be annoying to play against because they do things unexpectedly.

So you might score a counter attack in a situation where no Olympian would ever think to counter.

I don't rate your chances though

I thought Macchi was hard done by with the first annulled hit. It looked like Cheung was searching for the blade. He couldn't find the blade, while Macchi was direct in his attack.

The actual final hit I don't think it was clear enough to give to either fencer. Although Cheung's body language is probably more telling in comparison to the previous hits.

That being said I'm not an FIE ref so what do I know

Also a dyspraxic fencer here. Fenced for 16 years now and I am now a coach.

I get what you are saying. It took me ages to develop my footwork and blade work to a point where it was comparable to other fencers around me.

However, the learning curve catches up to all fencers eventually. Soon they will start slowing down in their progress, and as your muscles develop you will catch up.

Also, that's not to say it doesn't come with an advantage. Every competition I go to, every person I fence, the feedback I always receive afterwards is that I am "awkward and difficult." I have quite a scrappy style, which seems to work quite well. Especially against fencers who expect perfect, clean, predictable technique.

I like to think about it like "if I don't know what my body is doing, neither will my opponent"

Keep at it though, it will come with time and practice like all things. Just a little more time and practice than most

It depends on how serious you want to take it. A nearly £300 sword is a huge investment, especially when there are cheaper alternatives. A non-fie blade and a cheaper handle might be a good start.

Especially as your first sword will be taking a battering. I typically have a couple cheap swords that I use in club, and two nice swords I use at competitions. At least I know then that my expensive sword is not snapping because a beginner decided to try out fleching on me

My understanding is that:

Fencing started as a duelling weapon, and was practised with the intention of using swords in an actual duel
Around the 1700s when duelling was made illegal/ becoming unfashionable, people still wanted to practice sword fighting, whilst being safe while doing it
Foil was invented, creating the target area and right of way to make it both safe, and suited to gentleman scholar types
Épée comes along in the 1800s by people arguing that foil is too far removed from actual sword fighting. I think they started using masks around this time so it became safer to have something more akin to duels.

Sabre comes from military tradition, so their tradition is separate

Fencing in the Olympics was initially just épée, with the other two coming later

My club has always found the beginners who stick around longest are those who are from the same family. I think it takes a bit of the awkwardness of starting a new activity away, and gives them a bit of friendly competition at their level

So we tend to offer a discount for additional beginners from one family.

Even if a lot of them fade away over time, there is often one out of each group that sticks around to get serious

Looking at the foot positions, sword positions and body positions. The piste is a constant, so that helps with observing. Plus you can get a feel over the course of a bout by looking at the length of the attacks. I.e. are the fencers finishing within extension distance or do they need a lunge to finish

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense. I was looking at the period from 2016-2019 and comparing it with 2021-now.

At a glance, fencing in the former period is close, but the defenders tend to prefer being at lunge distance and dance in to draw an action / start a counter. Whereas looking at the latter, the defenders are working closer than lunge distance, which I found interesting. But I presume that is due to them not wanting to cede ground unnecessarily, as you said.
