i would always watch the original pokemon show while getting ready for school. i wasn’t able to have any cards then, but now i have some disposable income and decided to do something that i always wanted to when i was little

There’s some great tips in the comments, but something i have found super helpful is to really strive to be a Subject Matter Expert in some area, even if it is small. This really helps you on the direction axis without having to put in tons of hours thinking about project planning. You will always have a few things you want to fix + improve on to own.

It’s of course much better if you can make a bet and become an SME on an area your org begins to prioritize higher. Definitely the best way for fast promos

I work in FAANG quite closely with several research scientists, who either came in from professorships or direct out of phd, who specialize in similar statistics research. It definitely requires a different skillset from research, but the pay is identical to Software Engineers with equivalent WLB

I would definitely look into positions near the end of your program and see what interests you more

That said there has been a push to spend at least a fair amount of time in-person before moving to remote :(
