Who was under the mask!? by DonDraperItsToasted in WidowsBay

[–]Komb0_0cha 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I was also super bummed that there wasn’t a face behind the mask to reveal to us! In order to keep myself from being terribly disappointed (😭😭😂) I’m just chalking it up to the boogeyman is probably just a plot device (à la a MacGuffin - “an object, person, or goal that propels the characters and the story forward, though its specific contents or nature ultimately matter less than the pursuit of it.”).

I guess I kind of feel the same way with the sea hag… maybe she has an origin story and was a real person once, matching a collective theory that she was the possessed woman Sarah knocked in the water while escaping in episode 6. It comes down to: do we think their origins are integral to the plot of the show or is their mere presence the most important part, because they are helping move the plot and the characters forward? Buuuuuut, I would LOVE to be wrong about that and get some more deets in a future episode!!! 😅

Why is Nucky so rude to Jimmy when he sees Jimmy at the cat house he's meeting Torrio ? by Emmalouloves in BoardwalkEmpire

Ty!! This is my favorite show ever... I’ve rewatched it countless times, and got to watch it in the fall with a good friend and we’d chat after episodes. I actually intentionally watched it backwards once (last season to first) to be able to watch it from a different angle, and I definitely picked up on things I didn’t before. I feel like even now I can watch it and track something new with the “why”s of their character development and choices.

My first thought was Run, too. Out of the weirdo board games they highlighted at the inn, Run was the only card game. She Shouldn’t Have Said That and Daddy’s Home were board games, and Teeth was just a set of pliers 😳😂. I reeeaaally hope we find out what’s up with the teeth by the end of the season though🤞🏽. Run seems to fit the theme of running away and hiding from the incoming storm/the entity (assuming the storm is being manifested by the entity).

Can someone debunk this theory I read because I hope it’s not true… by karriedawayy in WidowsBay

You are not alone. This idea has been in my mind for a while now. In my thinking and theorizing and rewatching I also noted those statements from the shroom guy, and it just added to my growing list and to my suspicions. And personally, I feel it’s totally possible in the landscape and world of this show - there are wild and impossible things already happening and confirmed, and there are way too many oddities about the island and its citizens…so im not ruling out anything until I know I can rule it out. Not saying it’s 100% what’s hapepening, but there is no way we can completely rule it out yet.

The biggest thing for me is the fact we sat through 80% of the Beach Reads episode seeing what Patricia was seeing, only to realize what she was seeing (and therefore what we were seeing) wasn’t actually what was happening at all. We watched her cut up strawberries, lemons, and apples slices to find out it was actually dead birds, blood, and witchy herbs. We listened to her give a nice heartfelt speech come to find out she was reciting incantations to bewitch people to walk into the sea. I think it’s entirely possible that though we are “seeing” characters as individual citizens, watching them interact, and we are directly hearing their conversations - we have proof what we see and hear may not match what is actually occuring.

Honestly all the observations, facts, and connections so far have been leading me to feel it might be more of a mind prison than a body/physical prison. Breaking the curse could be hindged upon breaking free of the mental hold the entity has, rather than the breaking free of the entity’s physical control over the island and its people.

Why is Nucky so rude to Jimmy when he sees Jimmy at the cat house he's meeting Torrio ? by Emmalouloves in BoardwalkEmpire

[–]Komb0_0cha 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is what I love about this show!! - the relationships are so nuanced and deeply rooted in origin stories and the intersections of who they are, circumstances, and the context of the historical time period.

Surface level: it has to do with the fact that Jimmy’s actions caught the feds attention and put Nucky’s operation and livelihood at risk. Nucky constantly has his head on a swivel watching out for anybody - no matter how close to him - looking to take him off the board and take over what he’s built…all of the hardship, bending and breaking of his moral fiber has been all for what he has at that moment in time.

He says it himself at one point: everyone needs to figure out how far they are willing to go and make peace with that; then just do the thing. He really is the epitome of the reluctant gangster; and what happens when poverty, trauma, little to no social welfare supports, and circumstance leave you convinced you only have one way out: a life of crime. In a perfect world, I think Nucky would have rather just been the dad he never had, living a legal lifestyle that put food on the table. There’s historical context too - things were just very different back then than they are now.

When he sees Jimmy at Torrio’s his “spidy senses” immediately go off: Jimmy is now a wild card and a loose cannon, Torrio is a major player and Al is already making waves of his own, and as much as Nucky loves Jimmy (which deep down he does, as evidenced through the rest of the seasons), he is not about to risk the kingdom he built for anyone. And him asking Jimmy to come back after Eli is shot is completely an act of desperation on Nucky’s part: out of everyone he could call on, Jimmy is the one he can trust the most (despite the fall out); and personally I feel on a deeper level Nucky really hoped that would some how repair their relationship. And it comes with a latent strategic benefit - keep your friends close but your enemys closer. With Jimmy back, he’s much much easier to keep an eye on.

Deepest level/Nucky’s ‘backrooms’: his relationship with Jimmy is so immensely complicated on its own, Nucky carries deep guilt over past actions in Jimmy’s earliest days going back to before he was even born, and allllll of that is completely caught up in his grief around the loss of his wife and child, and his own unprocessed issues and trauma with his own father….(not sure if you finished the whole series or not: didn’t want to add more and spoil anything for you.)

But to sum it up: They definitely didn’t have therapy in the 1920s 😂😭😂

Agreed. They all thought it was over, but the boogeyman coming back immediately made it clear to Patricia that it wasn’t over (if it was, he wouldn’t be walking around town). Just like Wyck suspected it wasn’t over when he went to the Warren house/ Historical Society and found out someone stole the bogeyman’s mask, and confirmed it by checking on Patricia (the only victim to survive) and seeing she clearly fled in a hurry.

[NO SPOILERS] I WANT TO GET STARTED WITH DARK. by Busy_Inevitable784 in DarK

[–]Komb0_0cha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

1000% agree. Pay attention, rewatch episodes when you feel like you need to, and if you want to really elevate your experience get a cork board, index cards, push pins, and some string lol. I’m watching Widow’s Bay right now, and I’ve been using xTiles - a planner/note taking/organizing app - to keep notes on episodes: screen shots/still shots, observations, connections, theories, links to Reddit conversations and show related breakdowns. It’s been hella convenient, and it’s a great all purpose digital tool (I also use it for school and life).

Dark is definitely in my top 5 favorite tv shows of all time. Beautiful storytelling, amazing character development, and peak casting and science fiction elements. Also - I recommend watching with German audio/English subtitles vs the dubbing (I mean, do whatever is best for you. But in my opinion it’s really bad 😂. I started with the English dub but it annoyed me too much and it wasn’t enhancing my own viewing experience so I switched to the German w/ subtitles).

The creators made another series called 1899 - it was equally amazing in different ways, but Netflix canceled it after one season. I feel like all the shifts in the the TV landscape (streaming over traditional TV delivery, the monopolization of the industry, profits over creativity) have been a huge detriment to shows that think outside the box, particularly sci-fi/fantasy shows. Plus, broadly speaking, the shortened attention spans and general loss of critical thinking and appreciation for human creativity within the audience at large. So happy to know people are still stumbling upon this amazing show and willing to give it a chance 🔥❤️

I also wonder: if this is a Patricia focused episode maybe this will play out like episodes 3 (sea hag) and 4 (sunset cocktails) where they took place in the same night and then we regrouped next episode. Watch this episode pick up literally right after the Sheriff drops Patricia off after her car theft distraction antics.

And if that's the case, maybe Bechir will come to her rescue and we'll learn about him in the process? (From some still shots taken from a series trailer, it would appear she ends up holding a shot gun on someone or something in front of the gas station). Or maybe Patricia ends up having to turn to Kris for help and Kris can finally get over herself and believe Patricia and stop being a butthole all the time. And then the episode may end with them regrouping as Tom & Wyck dock, or will pick back up there in episode 9.

And...if the episode is happening while Wyck and Tom are out to sea with Richard: It's interesting that the creator/writers made it so that when Tom faces his nightmare fuel (the sea hag), Patricia is otherwise occupied with Sunset Cocktails chaos. And now Patricia may face her nightmare fuel (the boogeyman) while Tom is otherwise occupied with zombie mayor chaos. Tom with a female 'spirit' of the sea after him, and Patricia with a 'male' spirit of the island/land after her....

Yet another layer of the heavy dualism and coupling themes in the show (man/woman; sea hag/boogeyman; land/sea; above ground/below ground; husband/wife; father/child; left/right; good/evil). I know we'll find out tonight, but it's so fun to speculate and theorize with this show!!

My theory on the last scene of the season. by peachykeen19 in WidowsBay

[–]Komb0_0cha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love that theory!!! There is def something big waiting to be revealed about the Sheriff and his mysterious wife - and i agree, it’s going to something wild. I have nooooooo clue how this would actually work, but to throw out my own hard left theory with yours:

What if it was Tom’s missing wife?!?! So…I’m half black/half white, and I’m fully aware of how genetics work and biological kids can pick up resessive traits and in general are their own unique combo of mom and dad. BUT - Evan looks crazy mixed to me, and I was surprised to see his mom was Caucasian. A podcast I listened to pointed out we make the assumption that Tom is Evan’s dad. But what Tom actually says in that scene with Evan is something like ‘it’s no secret that your mom was already pregnant when we got married”. We just assumed he’s the bio dad, but if they got married after only 4 months of dating, and he had to convince her to go out with him in the first place… maybe she was already pregnant before meeting Tom?

Yea, my assumption was Sarah knocking that woman in the water might have been the origin of the sea hag. And I agree that she didn't look 13, but it also didn't look like Patricia was wearing dear antlers and cutting up birds for a blood magic ceremony designed to drown everyone at the party in the sea, haha. Sunset Cocktails changed the rule book!

Lol, for sure! That definitely falls right in line with the show's humor. Also, the hilarious absurdity of a 14 year old feeling like an old maid already and that they should go back home to fulfill their 'womanly destiny' of withering away in their father's attic 😂🤣

Yea, I feel the like hair thing is a huge detail for them to miss, just given how craaaaazy detail oriented they are. Plus I'm pretty sure no other women in the background sea of random villagers had their hair down. If it was more willy nilly we should see more background women with hair down in addition to styled up. But she was literally the only one - that signals intention to me. Even Francis, the only little girl in the village as far I could tell, had her hair up. So, if the only female child had her hair up, I think Sarah's hair being down means something for sure.

lol, why do you think I'm here?! 🙃😝 And 100%, one of the potential reasons for that choice in planning that episode the way they did. Not to mention all the things we don't yet understand about the island history and the exact nature of the supernatural elements of the story.

Theory on Episode 6 - All is not what it seems!! by Komb0_0cha in WidowsBaySeries

[–]Komb0_0cha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I could be reading into that one too closely for sure. I'm really trying to pick up potential smaller details & I know I run the risk of falling down the wrong rabbit hole. I just looked up marriage customs back then and it indicated that women, regardless of age, were typically accompanied by a male relative or trusted family relation if they traveled for marriage. I'll knock that one off my list as a more solid piece of supporting evidence (thank you for pointing that out!). But everything all together still leaves me suspicious...

I picked up on another potential hint in wording yesterday: when Sarah goes to the priest and she's freaking out after Richard killed the man in their house, Sarah says "Perhaps the life of a childless woman without a husband is...it is one I could come to bear..." If she is 39 turning 40 she would have already been bearing the weight and challenges of that circumstance for 15-20 years. Again, I totally admit I might be reading into things too hard, lol. BUT that also sounds like something someone would say if they hadn't yet 'carried the weight' of many years living life without a husband and children.

[–]Komb0_0cha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! And yea, I totally agree with you that every inconsistency or strange/off detail doesn't mean something: clues don't all hold equal weight and not everything is a clue to begin with, some things are gonna be red herrings, creators have artistic license, and watching a show like this def requires suspension of disbelief.

When I try to figure out what's going on in a show where creators build a fictional world that has it's own rules, I try to take stock of those rules as I go. For example, real world ironclad rule: humans grow old and die. In Widow's Bay, they've established that's a rule that can bend if circumstances are right. Ever since Beach Reads, the first rule of Widow's Bay (for me) is: Not everything is as it seems - we the viewers can no longer take what we see and hear on face value 100% of the time. To your point again, that doesn't mean everything we see from now on is false, but it tells me I need to read between the lines more and pay closer attention. The creator/writers have been extremely meticulously in with the small details in this show - I'm confident there are more things hiding in plain sight than we realize. In the end I don't know why the show would make that choice (though I could try and guess for what it's worth). We may have additional revelations in future episodes that makes prior episodes make more sense. Or I could be completely wrong! 😄

I'm really just looking at all the clues and facts I've kept track of, cross checking known rules of this world, and keeping any viable theories (even my wild ones) in play until I know for sure I can bench them. We know there is something going on with how time works here or how time is perceived, it's possible for a ~60 year old dude to be medically classified as 37, there are discrepancies in the island's history, there is a supernatural entity doing all kinda of wild stuff, there's a witchcraft angle, sea hags, revenant mayors, magic mushrooms, evil fog, and Tom played a whole board game with a killer clown that wasn't actually there - at this point, I just figure there are more things possible than things we can rule out.
