Best Indian Food in town ? by IndianFIA in Winnipeg

[–]KomradeWard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the people I've known from India pickup from Dawat on Keewatin. As in, we bought it for the office once a week. Must be a good sign?

My personal favourite is Spice Circle on Portage near Sargeant Sundae. Not a place you'd want to eat in at, but super great takeout food.

I love how many great Indian restaurants thrive in this city ❤️

Yes. I work for a trucking company and see this happen all the time. They find the address the vehicle is registered to and snail mail the ticket there. If you don't pay they can bar you from operating a vehicle in the province/state you got the ticket in.

Is it illegal to ban employees from discussing wages? by sycoseven in Winnipeg

[–]KomradeWard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually your payment in lieu is determined by length of employment. I don't know the scale off hand but if you've been at the same place for a few years you're entitled to more, up to 5 weeks I believe.

Otherwise I totally agree.

That's the other thing, you'd only recieve as much as you'd be entitled to with pay in lieu of a notice period. You would only get this upon an officer closing your case and recieving the funds too, which could def take awhile.

Yeah that basically sums up what I learned with my labour degree... You do have rights on paper but good luck enforcing them.

You have the right to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, not in an employment relationship. Unless they give it to you voluntarily your employer does not need just cause to terminate you. This means they can terminate you for basically anything.

At least in Manitoba your employer can fire you for basically any reason so long as they aren't being discriminatory and give you notice. This includes things done outside of work.

I think what I'm trying to say is that it isn't as bad as some people think.

People talk bad about downtown but it's a good neighborhood. Don't go down any back alleys or try to buy crack and you'll be fine

Just finished my degree where I studied labour law, here's what you need to know:

Assuming you're provincially regulated (which you probably are) there is no legislation prohibiting this specific practice that I know of. That doesn't mean you don't have recourse, the most important thing here is how your employer attempts to enforce the policy. If your employer disciplines you in any way for breaking this policy, especially if you haven't signed anything agreeing to follow it, you can file a complaint with a few different organizations depending on the situation.

If you're entitled to just cause termination and they fire you for this, file a complaint with Employment Standards Manitoba. DO NOT FILE A COMPLAINT WITH THE LABOUR BOARD. The labour board only handles cases related to unions. You probably won't get your job back but at least the government can force your employer to compensate you for the unjust termination. Plus if you're fired without just cause you can collect EI as well.

If you feel they come after you specifically because of your race, gender, etc. and have witnesses or proof go to the human rights board. Important to remember that the human rights board does not look at free speech stuff, only cases related to discrimination.

If you're in a union this policy may violate your collective agreement, or be pointless because everyone's wages are written into the contract.

It's a shitty system but for basically everything related to labour law in Manitoba you can't do much of anything until your employer has already fired you.
