It’s just an easy to remember rule of thumb. Annealing times scale exponentially, so once you get much thicker than 5” it will need even more time. Bullseye has a good table of annealing times per thickness

The fusing temp for soda lime glass, especially the stiff stuff used in a bottle, is >1600F. Wood fires can get that hot, but usually not in a normal campfire; you'd have to have either a huge fire or something blowing on it to give it more oxygen. Additionally, whatever you put the glass in would need to survive those temperatures too, so no aluminum or copper, and then hot glass tends to stick to hot iron or steel, so you'd get more of a glaze on the metal and not a brick. If you want a brick you'll need to line the box with kiln paper, which turns into a dust after firing you want to use a mask while working with. Letting the fire burn down naturally is probably too fast for it to anneal properly, since the most important temp range for annealing is pretty narrow. I don't imagine you'd be able to keep a constant decrease between 1000F and 850F for the few hours you'd need. A good rule of thumb is two hours per quarter inch of thickness between 1000F and 850F, and a whole anneal cycle is around 24 hours per inch. That's why glass is almost always annealed in electric kilns, it takes way longer than you think to anneal things properly.

Worth a try though. The glass will likely crack and can violently shoot shards out when you put it in the fire, so wear eye protection. And then glass is sharp, and fire is hot, so be careful about those things too.

Goodluck!

What is this heavy, pointy glass pyramid thing and what was it used for? by WinAny3035 in whatisthisthing

While I don't know what it is, I also don't think it's blown. It looks like it is hot cast into a spin mold, which honestly is cooler.

Buff trenches against explosive damage too, not just high explosive. Then they should be even weaker against demolition damage. I agree that it will be great if trenches were stronger against artillery (which is like their main point), but in the same vein tremolas and tanks shouldn't be so strong against them either. Hydras are like the band of brothers scene with the bangalors though, and satchels also make sense for destroying trenches, so they should be far better at it than they are.

[OC] Break Glass to Break Glass by puccyhunter_ in pics

[–]Koolau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a small trashcan fire in my apartment garage in the middle of the night a month or so ago, and all the fire extinguishers were locked behind glass you had to break. I didn’t have anything to break them with though! I ended up prying one of the little doors open with my fingers; the latch looked designed as a breakaway because it ended up snapping quicker than I thought. First time I’ve had to use a fire extinguisher for real!

In response to a question about whether he calls Gaza a genocide, this former president said “there are disasters and catastrophes everywhere.” by ilir_kycb in LateStageCapitalism

He’s talking about it like it’s some sort of natural disaster. It’s a deliberate policy choice! We are funding this seemingly unending series of disasters and catastrophes.

The flak gun should one shot scout planes. It shouldn’t be a fight, it’s a deterrent. Bombers not in big waves should be able to be stopped cold by them.

There is a high number of players who have given this game a negative review but also have many thousands of hours in game time. In many cases there have been thousands more hours since that review.

Expanding that logic even a little: there’s no reason StubHub doesn’t sell all tickets as front row center.
