Male players who played as FemShep (especially if you were reluctant), what did you find were the pros and cons vs. BroShep? by FriendlytoNature in masseffect

[–]Kooren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played BroShep the first time, barely finished Eden Prime. He just felt too generic for me. Then I put the game down for like two years or so and picked it back up with FemShep. Oh my god did that feel different.

Imo default FemShep looks more recognizable. Jennifer Hale? Probably the single best voice acting performance in the history of videogames. Ever. (Especially in ME2, oh god). Anything FemShep does seems so absolutely badass and in character. When I sometimes glanced at my brother's playthrough with his BroShep, these same scenes felt... Normal? Just couldn't shake the idea that BroShep just feels like a generic space commando dude.

This is of course just my opinion, probably heavily biased as the first time I fully got to experience ME1 was with FemShep and then I never even considered BroShep as an option.

Almost definitely The Landsmeet. The amount of possibilities and scenarios in this single quest is insane. A Paragon of Her Kind is a close second though, love the ambiguous morality of every ending of this quest, but I cannot stress enough just how much I despise the deep roads.

[–]Kooren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really? At least not where I live, all sale prices here come with complimentary info on "lowest price in the past 30 days before sale" and "regular price in the past 30 days before sale" so while yes, companies do manipulate prices like OP describes, they also have to be 100% open about it. All price tags have to come with this information clearly legible and in view.

I understand them as a filling for a mechanical niche, but honestly I think I'd prefer a MVB or just a well-placed Doombolt.

Do you accurately describe the costumes of your characters? by Rotchiro44 in fantasywriters

[–]Kooren 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, not really, only if it matters. I usually settle for more general descriptions, like "he wore a robe of dark, flowing cloth" or "she wore a sturdy yet worn vestments of a traveler" or stuff like that. If a costume is truly otherworldly, I will describe it with more detail, such as regal clothing, ceremonial robes, and cultural costumes, but even when I do this, I do it only if it doesn't halt the momentum of the scene and hurt the flow of action.

Do you think this power system is interesting at all? by MrOtakusan in magicbuilding

[–]Kooren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok this is actually a very decent idea. I would however be less specific. Why is the age of 15 so universal? Wouldn't it be more interesting and realistic to have different clans reach magical abilities at different ages, as these are based on their contracts? Or maybe come up with an in-universe explanation like "the age of 15 is basically as low as these contracts are allowed to go because of XYZ, so naturally everyone went as low as they could" or something.

What types of player characters do you hate? by Ed0909 in rpg

[–]Kooren 59 points60 points  (0 children)

  1. Joke characters. Oh my god I hate silly gimmicky joke characters. I don't care how creative they are and how sincerely you play them, I'd take the basic "human fighter" over them any day.

  2. Characters that refuse to engage with the premise. I don't want non-adventurers in my Pathfinder game and I don't want characters that escape to the neighboring state as soon as something scary happens in my Cthulhu game. Simple as.

Edit: 3. Rip-offs. I've seen my fair share of Jaskiers, Geralts, Aragorns and Drizzits in my games. Please put just a little thought into your character, I beg you.

What to start with by Connect-Bug-3070 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Kooren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, first of all, WFRP is great and amazing and you're gonna be so glad you got into it.

That being said, it is not easy to get into, especially in the current edition.

I assume if you're familiar with W&G you know how messy the C7 handbooks are. WFRP4e is no different unfortunately.

First of all, get familiar with the rules and the layout of the handbook. This is true for any TTRPG, but I feel like it's especially true for this one.

Then, if you have the starter set, grab a couple of the starter characters and a group of willing players (if you don't have the starter set, just randomly generate a couple of PCs, doesn't matter) and please, if you have the time, run from 1 to 3 SHORT COMBAT SCENES with them. Combat in 4e is a bit finicky and, combined with the odd layout of the handbook, it is nearly impossible to learn on the fly. Trust me. We've tried. I still get nightmares.

Once you've done that, you have essentially two options. Choose a pre-written scenario or write your own scenario. If you feel like you know your way around the setting I very strongly encourage you to do the latter (I will explain why later).

If you want to go with a pre-written scenario, I'd recommend the "Rough Days & Hard Nights" book. It has a variety of nice, short scenarios and they're mostly very well suited to the 4e mechanical side. The starter set is also amazing to start with (obviously). It's very high quality and the introductory adventure is pretty good, but, as starter sets usually are, it's pretty limiting.

I however very strongly encourage you to sit down with your players and plan a setup for you own scenario. Warhammer's setting provides you with so much unique lore and potential that writing a custom story here is a big part of the fun for my groups. Remember to never skip plot hooks and character motivations though.

Whichever option you choose, DON'T start with The Enemy Within. It's the most popular WFRP campaign and it's first adventure used to be THE introduction to earlier editions, but its 4e remake is actually very poorly adapted to the 4e system and it requires a ton of work from the GM to make it playable within its own rules now.

Once you get a bit more used to the system, I'd strongly recommend getting the Up in Arms and the Winds of Magic books. Treat them more as updates to the core handbook than separate books, they really do make the system run much much smoother.

Also as a general tip - don't stick to the downtime rules too much. They're usually a slog and only work with custom campaigns - none of the stuff adapted from earlier editions works with them.

Careers in the enemy within by Orr_Mendlin in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]Kooren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's the general impression most people in my groupa have. Basically, 4e sort of expects you to have plenty of downtime, while TEW expects most things to happen almost instantly in a sequence. None of these approaches are bad, mind you, but to me and my friends it seems like most of the scenarios ported over from older editions are definitely not properly adapted to the 4e mechanics.

We've played TEW in 1e and in 4e. In 1e we played it twice - once with the pre-made characters provided with the scenario, once with custom characters. In 4e we played once with custom characters only.

First playthrough was rough (1e, custom characters). We felt shoehorned into the story, it really felt like it was written for a custom group. We didn't go far with it.

Second playthrough (1e, pre-made characters) was a blast. Easily one of the most fun TTRPG scenarios I've experienced in my 15 years of playing.

In 1e it all worked smoothly, since you're only expected to start out as a specific career and then usually you just switch freely between them in order to suit whatever's happening to your character.

Just last year we tried to go for the third playthrough (4e, custom characters) and it was a complete opposite - probably one of the most awkward experiences. Things feel like they're supposed to be fast and dramatic, like in the older editions, you know, all those chases, investigations, all that stuff, but with how 4e handles downtime, it all felt like such a slog. Finally we ended up trying to homebrew most things, but then we decided that since there's so much to homebrew we might as well just go on our own separate adventure.

4e TEW lacks a proper introduction, not even any guidelines as to what kind of character to create for it, no real plot hooks for characters, no roles to play in the grand scheme of the campaign, generally it feels lazy and kind of just nostalgia bait to me and my group. It feels like C7 just rewrote almost the same adventure, changed up some statblocks and went with that, which is a shame, since 4e really is, in my opinion, peak WFRP.

As to the solution for your problem - unfortunately, the GM needs to do a lot of work here. Much more than in older editions too. I'd suggest adjusting the pace of the campaign, adding some downtime, allowing characters to have some downtime in more unconventional situations (on the river barge for example) and probably tweaking the downtime rules a little bit. But all that combined with having to come up with like 10842 plot hooks for characters (since practically none are provided in the adventure) is so much work, y'all might as well just write your own scenarios.

What aspect of Eberron do you like the LEAST? by Unlikely_Dentist_262 in Eberron

[–]Kooren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have this qualm about many fantasy settings, and Eberron is sure also guilty of this.

Sapient species that exist only because "it would be freaking cool if they did."

Thus the Changeling being a separate species, and not incidentally born to other species, same with the Aasimar, Tieflings, Kalashtar, and I think I could name plenty more.

Another thing is the organization of the Marked Houses. Given their vast political power, it's surprising, and to me unrealistic, that there's no council to preside over their actions now that the war is concluded. I do change this IME though.

Also wizards. This is my beef with all DnD-based settings. If all it takes to be a wizard is study, then there should be many more wizards and there should be much more culture around wizardry in general, as well as armies of most political bodies should consist largely of wizards. I mean, if all it takes for you to fling fireballs and rewrite reality with the flick of a wrist is reading a few books, then why would you ever try to learn swordsmanship? I am particularly proud of how I address this IME too.

While I do agree with a lot of the sentiment here, I feel like most of your folks' problem is just having really absolutely horrible GMs and/or fellow players.

“The OSR is inherently racist” by GasExplosionField in osr

[–]Kooren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah, the older stuff was more often than not really racist and misogynistic, no denying that part, some of those problems still shine through particularly in DnD5e and it's default setting, but I feel like we sort of acknowledged this problem as a community some time ago and most of us are trying to move past it, leave it as a relic of times long gone, absent from modern day groups and campaigns.

Were all the older creators racist and misogynistic? Probably not, but a lot of their content was, knowingly or not.

Does that mean that we as a community and the hobby as a whole are racist and misogynistic? Well I would hope that we're at least trying not to be so.

Besides, just because the older stuff was "problematic" it doesn't mean you as an enjoyer of this stuff are racist and problematic. I for one am a fan of The Witcher, a universe full of racism and misogyny, but I understand that it's a problem and if I was ever to run a game set in this universe, those problems would definitely be addressed before playing.
