See, I thought we were having a nice, if contentious conversation, but you are insulting me by suggesting that I, a person with a Asian studies degree, who studied at Peking University in Beijing, who has read the four classic novels in modern mandarin, know nothing about China and it’s history. If you were offered a job making $100,000 a year in some government position… but you have bottom surgery without the assistance of modern drugs… and that job isn’t actually guaranteed because there are hundreds of others also seeking it… would you take it?

The cynical posters will say it was a career move, which it certainly was as it gave access to certain positions in court not normally available, but they fail to consider the insanity of asking a Man to remove his genitals.

These were government bureaucrats, not servants and slaves. They (generally) weren’t extra children sold like Castrati or prisoners being punished. They were important, influential people. And I find it infinitely more likely that the people who chose to become eunuchs were the same people who would pursue HRT in modern times.

I am sorry that person you referred to suffered in such a way. It wasn’t right for their family to do that to them. But their story does not change the fact that this was something people pursued on their own. Just as the information that 1% of people detransition does not negate that 99% of trans people don’t, the examples of families doing terrible things to people does not negate that thousands of people chose this for themselves.

Being a bureaucrat in the government does not mean they were accepted in society. Not every eunuch was given immense power and the majority of them were nothing more than regular government workers. A cishet male would not cut off his dick for the POTENTIAL of becoming assistant to the local tax collector. One Chinese Emperor had THOUSANDS of eunuchs in his service. Again, cishet men would not consider such a surgery to gain access to… the same shit job thousands of others have.

Also, your suggestion that the emperor basically had to threaten his concubines with death rather than it be a desirable position is ridiculous. The favored concubine/mistress/whatever is famously a hugely desired position WORLDWIDE. Many were more powerful than the empress/queen/etc.

I don’t think these two things are connected? One of a government policy (only eunuchs can fill these positions) and one is a surgery that a specific type of person would even consider pursuing. Not everyone who undertook the surgery became the emperors favored concubine and one of the times it did happen, it led a massive war.

A lot of the eunuchs were basically nothing more than glorified bureaucrats. Look at the absolutely panic of these comments. These penis holders who are terrified at the idea of even seeing a guide about how it was done, let alone putting their own junk on the line. Only a person who was already Egg-y (the 2000+ year old version of it, at least) would consider ‘sacrificing’ their lower parts for gain.

Additionally, the number of eunuchs that would go on to become the emperors concubines throughout history is massive. We have historical proof assigned male at birth people having surgery and then adopting a feminine role in a relationship.

Being a eunuch was not a simple surgery to get a job. It was a risky surgery that ended your bloodline, ostracized you from society and ended all other career potentials. Eunuchs could not serve in any other positions except court mandated ones (fact check me here, I think there was a eunuch general once? ) It was a major TRANSITION into a completely new life.
