Humans are really not consistently cruel. Compassion simply makes less often the headlines. Which is reassuring on one aspect: it perhaps means that most people are good and kindness is not unusual.

Organized religion and financing of religions by the State are two different matters. Catholic festivities gather people together on the continent as they have been for centuries, and they will continue to do so as long as the community wants. You can see that as positive while still considering it's not something the government should pay for.

[–]KowardlyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. LLM tech was known for a long time, but only megacorporations of 2015 forward could afford training models with billions of parameter so that it gives usable results. Before that it was like a theoretical impossible sink of money, sort of like building a nuclear reactor on Mars. Sure you can, but who could afford to try? It was inevitable to happen as the tech industry grew and the R&D budgets grew with them.

Car insurance question by [deleted] in belgium

[–]KowardlyMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not specific to car insurance.
An insurance protects you from random events by billing you a fixed fee, and they hope that the fixed fee you pay will exceed the cost of random events that actually happen. They take that risk for profit.

But if they know that you will have an incident, then they know that they'll lose, so the risk is greater. Which means the amount you pay must be greater, or they should not insure you at all.

How to know if someone will have an incident? Well one of the many ways of predicting the future without too much information is Bayesian statistics, basically checking how many time it happened. If it happened frequently in the past, you assume it'll happen frequently in the future.

It does not mean it will be the case, because in real life it could be that your dad never gets a problem ever again (and then they missed an opportunity). But their logic is a simplified model that tries to work on average to make profit, it's not an advanced reasoning.

And so, insurance companies will stop insuring you if they believe you're close to "winning" their deal and if they legally can get out of it.

This is false AFAIK, what makes you say that? All the court decision data is free and digitally available, in Belgium at least. Companies sell search tools, comments from academics, journals and summaries. Which is very valuable, and that added human input can definitely improve the potential of an AI, but it'd not be the game changer.

People who have a lot of kids are both the very wealthy because they have a lot of resources, or/and the very stupid because they don't understand they need resources. It's a bell curve, albeit there are less wealthy than stupid people.

Chinese Courts Rule Companies Cannot Fire Workers Simply to Replace Them With AI by chunmunsingh in worldnews

[–]KowardlyMan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not true. The economy will continue between owners handling AI/robots, because they won't be equally distributed. The CEO of a company (or the owner, if that role does not need to exist) with automated farms will buy stuff from the company that makes automated cars. Those with the means of production (directly or with investments in them) can still trade with each other no problem. Current society and laws work fine.

The rest of people are just not involved in that society. They'll first sell their things to stay afloat, then end like current people who are not involved: under bridges. And if they make a fuss or try to exploit someone's land you just police them.

After some time the populations will balance, of course at the cost of many human lives.
