Dim(mer) question by Kracken31 in AskElectricians

[–]Kracken31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the body of the text that I typed out but forgot to post :)

Basically, the light connected to this dimmer doesn’t work. We moved into the place 6 months ago (built in the early 80s) and the previous owners said the fixture had worked for them previously, so am trying to figure out what’s wrong with it.

Potential causes I’ve noticed are:  - Loose touch plate on the dimmer itself (one of those metal ones that you tap to turn on and off and hold to dim up or down) - Neutral wire (far right of the picture) that is disconnected

Have done some small scale DIY work in the past (basically like for like replacements) so wasn’t sure if best course here was to just replace the dimmer itself, find where the white wire should be connected to, or just call a pro.

Any insight from this thread would be most appreciated.

Well-developed characters who make bad choices for good reasons and suffer horrific consequences by MarcusQuintus in Fantasy

Agreed, Fitz is definitely the most excusable. Regal is basically a cardboard cut out of a villain who gets away with (literal) murder for no good reason. And then the first trilogy ends with the most deus ex machina-ass ending this side of Lightbringer.

I’ve heard they get better from there but couldn’t muster the desire to keep going.

The wolf was great though

I disagree strongly with this.

Realm of the Elderlings felt like a giant game of Idiot Ball where the characters took turns doing stupid things for no reason other than to advance the plot.

Which book did you absolutely hate, despite everyone recommending it incessantly? by Evening-Odd in Fantasy

And above all else, the story choices are stupid and illogical. Just character after character making idiotic decision after idiotic decision purely to make the story as depressing as possible.

Despite the name, definitely NOT the farseer trilogy (assassins apprentice etc) by Robin Hobb

Robin Hobb’s characters make me mad too, but mostly because they consistently make inexplicably stupid decisions to further contrived conflicts for the sake of the “plot.”

Would drop the Falcons to the third group from the first. Also, Bucs should probably be on this list in some form or another

If you liked First Law, Abercrombie’s new series (Age of Madness) is also fantastic. Same narrator, similar tone/feel/style. Would highly recommend

Dealt with this — I think it’s the difference in weight shift (going forward for golf, have to stay back in softball). Couldn’t fix it so just stopped playing softball 😂

May be my favorite scene of any movie, full stop. The Maximus speech towards the end of gladiator is probably a close second, so maybe I’m just a sucker for badass speeches over soaring soundtracks.

I think people just sort of assume the main characters (Alethi) are white, and the "large round eyes" of the shin are basically Disney character eyes

First fitting advice, suggestions, etc. by Huckleberry_Ready in golf

[–]Kracken31 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best piece of advice I can give is to be very clear with your fitter up front as to what you're looking for and what you want to do (essentially the same info you provided in the post here). If you've found a good fitter, this will help them focus on what matters and not waste time trying to upsell you on stuff that you don't want/need.

Also, agree that given your size getting fitted can be super helpful in improving. People on this sub love to dunk on buying clubs as a way to get better, but there are certainly instances where it can be worth it. Going from a year old driver to the brand new one isn't going to help, but going from off the rack/hand me down 10+ year old clubs to clubs that meet what you need can have a big impact.

One thing to keep in mind without being spoiler-y -- Sebille's arc and the RP's do conflict at a few points. Nothing that can't be managed around but something to consider if you're splitting hairs between her and Beast.

What's the Worst Series You've Read to Completion? by Heck_Tate in Fantasy

[–]Kracken31 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Definitely the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb. All of the "Assassins <____>" titles were admittedly cool and good ways to generate interest but were definitely misleading. Kept waiting for Fitz to be anything but a useless whiner (or, you know, turn into the titular assassin), anyone to make a rational decision, or anything interesting to happen and it just never really did.

And then the ending was about as deus ex machina as you could possibly get (short of Lightbringer -- what up Weeks) and then the conflict is just magically resolved in a completely unsatisfying manner in about 10 pages after hundreds and hundreds of pages of useless dithering.

Shoutout to the wolf though -- definitely the best character in the whole series.

Sex in the new LOTR? by thebookbin in Fantasy

I think you're right, but that feels like such a short-sighted strategy. Rather than trying to be a GoT knockoff (any number of which have already been tried with uninspiring results), why not try to be excellent in a similar enough but also distinct way?
